I have to admit I really dislike the getting to know the contestants (especially the ones who are supposed to make interesting tv) I watch it on catch up so watch the initial here is your challenge, skip a bit and watch that last frantic minute before judging, the judging *3 and who’s going home. It’s really easy as there are ad breaks before every judging.

If the show was full of really competent bakers who could explain different techniques as they went I’d probably watch the whole thing.

I only managed the first couple of episodes last season but I like Nigella as a judge so will try and stick with it.

Yes, but did you see the size of many of yesterday’s cakes? Enormous, and you couldn’t just take a bit of one layer plus some adjacent icing, because two layers up there was a different filling you also had to taste! The cakes have got more and more elaborate over time, and it’s now comparatively rare for there to be only one filling type sandwiching the layers of a multi-layer cake…

I wouldn’t be in the least surprised if we were to see focus shifting, outside the showstoppers, to smaller, less monumental cakes, though obviously, it gets easier on the judges as more people are eliminated.

Yes I said to DP it looks like part of her face doesn't work, botox? Trying not to get crumbs in her lippy? Weird.

I was surprised at how much I liked Nigella, as I really didn’t think she would fit well into the BO team. She’s toned down her usual presenting style but with enough pops of “her” to make it her own. She’s going to be kind, too.
I must admit, I did wonder if they practice tasting (they must do, right?) as she was shovelling much to large spoonfuls in and trying to hide her mouth from the camera!
Has anyone else watched Dessert Masters, an Australian Masterchef spin off? It’s on Ch4 and Prime. The female presenter, who I think is also the presenter of Oz MC, has absolutely perfected how to eat a spoonful of cake or pudding on TV whilst looking super cool and not budging her wonderful red lippy. I’m in awe, tbh!

‘You’re perfectly entitled to not watch but doing so because “DEI!!!!” Is just ridiculous. Non- white contestants, gay contestants, disabled contestants, ND contestants have been part of the Bake Off fold since it started. Because it reflects the society we live in. Shock horror, not just middle aged women and young middle class girls bake!’

My gripe is that baking ability should come first, what with it being called ‘Bake Off’. To me it looks like they’re more concerned with putting together a rounded mix of society, before looking at contestants baking skill and experience. The last few years the standard has got steadily lower. I know it’s not just white middle age and young women who bake, but some of the contestants shouldn’t have made it past the auditions.

I thought the whole point was ordinary bakers who get better. If you want professionals they have a whole show for that.

Thankfully I didn't ever have to explain the 'two daddies' relationships either as my children are now grandparents themselves!

Just good home bakers who know how to behave themselves without squealing like attention seeking toddlers every few minutes.

Why would you only have to explain about gay people if your own children happened not to be straight?
And why 'Thankfully'? Is it so dreadful, the idea of talking to children about how some men love other men and some women love other women?

I can cope perfectly well. The drag Queen putting on a jesters hat to present his cake was performance art, not baking . I don’t give a shit if he’s in a consensual relationship with 5 wives, 3 husbands and a Siberian Tiger, just bake already.

No one says 'shagging' on the show. How prurient of you. It's perfectly appropriate for family viewing.
You could ask why on earth we need to know about any of their partners/home lives, but that's just how these sorts of shows do it. Showing snippets of them in their life away from the show gives a more rounded picture of them. And their partners are always discussed in the context of what they're doing on the show e.g. 'Michael works in IT and in his spare time loves baking for his partner, Tim [sorry, can you not handle that? You can substitute 'Sharon' if you like].'

I've got a confession. This is the first time I've ever watched it. I only started because of the hype over Nigella. I've had a peek occasionally and do like some reality TV.

I enjoyed it though and am sticking with it.

Oh and I had a friend over last night for dinner. I ended up buying cake at the local shop because of Bake off. I don't have a sweet tooth but it made me fancy cake. Am I going to end up housebound surrounded by crumbs and needing a hoist? Cake was factory made cornflake tart that was actually delicious.

Of course, as discussed on this thread, they do look for a range of people/personalities; that's just a feature of this kind of show. But maybe he was also better than some other entrants?

Please, so I can understand, can you explain clearly what is so inappropriate about a short clip showing his partners that he should not be on the show?

They can bake well. That’s fine. When contestants are chosen because of their race, disability, sexuality but are poor to average bakers, then it’s a problem

There will always be people on it who do better and those who do worse. Otherwise there'd be no way to pick a winner.

This doesnt track. You absolutely would not need to take a massive forkful to try and incorporate all layers and fillings in one go.

You take a small amount of cake and adjacent filling for each layer and taste them separately.

The way she was shoveling in huge chunks each time was just stupid.

You need to taste them together to see if they go together, surely?

Usually something happens spectuately on the first episode, someone dropping a cake is no surprise. I was happy that they kept the original presenters, Nigella was a fresh face and I liked her.
