I havent watched it yet, but not worried about spoilers
DD told me someone had got in early with a "nan" mention....

MissCooCooMcgoo · Yesterday 07:45

The fact Danni anthropomorpasises her bakes is enough reason for her to leave.

"She's a insert cake description" 🙄🤮

MiddleAgedDread · 23/09/2026 12:09

any chance you could add "Spoiler alert" to the title for those of us still to watch it on catch up??

If you're not caught up on Bake Off , don't open a thread on Bake Off 😜. What else are people going to be doing other than discussing what been happening.

throwaway3749574 · Yesterday 08:02

They’ve certainly done extremely well on the diversity of bake-off contestants this year! Danni’s weeks are numbered unless she had an exceptionally bad weekend in the tent.

Yes Nigella ate so strangely. Kind of like she was eating in secret in the kitchen in the middle of the night.

I explained to my primary children what a thrupple was. No biggie. They weren’t describing their sex life.

Honestly, I think she’s just adjusting to continually eating big forkfuls of cake in close-up and possibly feeling self-conscious about presenting a big mouthful of half-masticated chocolatey goo. It’s probably less controlled than the camera angles of her own shows, with more camera covering more people at the judging/ tasting bits, and obviously, not under her sole control.

Personally, I don’t know how they judge the earliest episodes with a vomit bucket. I’d eaten a single slice of stout cake from DH’s office bake off that day, and despite a healthy appetite, I couldn’t have had another bite, yet all the bites the judges ate on that show would have mounted up to way more.

LindorDoubleChoc · Yesterday 08:16

There is a Bake Off thread already up and running in Telly Addicts. Having two going at the same time isn't ideal for fans of the show who are going to stick with it and who like to hear everyone's opinion.

I don’t get what is up with her voice either. It’s really slurred. I wondered if it was too much Botox so she can’t move her mouth properly? Or lip filler maybe?

I wondered if she had her teeth done & was struggling a bit with them

Apprently Danni goes by ‘they’ not ‘she’, if anyone cares

I don’t sorry…

Or course she does.

She cannot bake for toffee with her vegan, foraged, falling on the floor shite.

Cartouche · Yesterday 09:32

Shatteredremnants · 23/09/2026 17:48

That bored that she was rushing at the end…..

I think that she was just being literal, though. I mean, the cakes were in the oven for an hour (which we don’t see the length of, ever, really because of the editing), and while there are some filling-related tasks they can be getting on with during that, once you include the cooling time, there’s actually a big longeur in the middle of running around like a headless chicken where there’s not much to do other than sit around and worry about whether you’ll have enough time to let it cool properly before icing. (Which there definitely wasn’t for the stout cake, given how many people had icing sliding off issues).

So I think Danni was just reflecting that. Someone else would have felt the need to hedge it round with ‘But I know things will be completely crazy again in half an hour’, but she’s not that person, which is why they left it in the edit, because it sounded a bit comic.

Again, there’s a higher than usual correlation between ND and identifying as non-binary.

The sole reason I’m not watching this series with my pre teen. I don’t want to explain thrupples. Ffs. How is that something that’s “mainstream” enough to be shown on a baking programme.

”Dawn is 37 and lives with her partner Chris. When she’s not working as an accountant, they both enjoy gardening and swinging.”

”Charlie is 59 and from Swindon. They live with their partner Bucky, a retired race horse.”

It’s so not ok for a show at 8pm to have “drag man lives in a thrupple with Percy and Pippin” (or whatever they’re called). How is that appropriate for a pre watershed programme. Who wants to explain THRUPPLES to their children?!

I agree, of course it's not ok in a family show and has NOTHING to do with baking. Tbh, I'd never even heard of people living like that but I'd explain it briefly to my children through gritted teeth if they asked about it. Hopefully it won't be mentioned again in the show.

2 nans. Even showed him in the kitchen with them. Bonus bingo!

Surely it’s easier to explain to a pre-teen that a throuple (thrupple?) is like a couple but three people rather than two, than to explain lots of entirely ordinary when like ‘How exactly does money work?’ or how solar panels generate electricity?

But that would be normalising it. It's not ordinary at all.

TheEasterPangolin · Yesterday 09:55

One episode and I’m done. They’ve ticked all the DEI boxes and put baking ability at the bottom of the selection criteria - ND, disabled, non-binary, black, brown, gay, drag (in a throuple, no less), older person. Only a few seem like half competent bakers. Nigella looks about as into it all as she would doing a load of laundry. It’s unwatchable (to me anyhow).

Well, that was the attitude to gay relationships not very long ago. Only a fairly small minority of people are gay, yet thankfully we’ve moved past the stage in institutionalised homophobia as expressed in marriage laws and legislation.

I mean, I imagine very few people are in ‘official’ throuples, though a relationships counsellor friend said she’s had an uptake in them coming to see her over the past few years (and in a small Irish city, not LA or somewhere) but I’m not sure its rarity is problematic in itself, is it?

Mo, Paul, Connie, Moyin, Nikki and Yannis are all good and seem like “proper” bake off contestants (there for their ability and enthusiasm and all very likeable and watchable). Might have missed someone else out too!

AlwaysExtraHot · Yesterday 10:20

I thought Molly was really impressive the way she saved herself after dropping the cake. Just made another, in a form that would bake quicker, and changed the decoration. She's a problem-solver.
I'm sure they consulted her about the set-up (surely no TV show would be daft enough not to?) and she just asked for the extra, low mini-bench to be added and said everything else was fine.
Danni is highly annoying and I hope and expect she'll go next week. Maybe along with Shannon.
Loved Gary, just quietly getting on with it.
Liked mango chocolate cake woman (I don't have all their names down yet); she seems very warm.
Tom is sweet, and clearly talented.
Don't mind drag man, although I do hope he doesn't make every bake about him being a drag act.
The throuple thing was introduced very matter-of-factly and it would have been much more conspicuous if they'd shown everyone else with their families/partners and just skimmed over his. Oh, and saying someone lives with their partners is not remotely comparable to saying, 'When she’s not working as an accountant, they both enjoy gardening and swinging.' Hmm
I adore Mo. 'What type of cat is it?' 'I don't know. Ginger.' Grin He's an amazing baker, and seems gentle and slightly, endearingly awkward. I also loved his friends (brothers? Not sure) – looking like Ali G rude boys but eating cake and going, 'That's spot on.'
I liked Nigella, but her speech is a little odd. Is it years of coke numbing her lips? Or lip fillers?

There is also a lot of fuss that all of the contestants are English or live in England - no Scottish, Welsh or N Irish bakers at all.

That’s what I thought , teeth ! I’m not normally a Nigella fan , too much of the voluptuous, ooh aren’t I naughty eating this but I actually thought she’d toned it down a bit and wasn’t too bad. I also thought there would be more of a battle of the divas between her and Alison, but it wasn’t too bad. Noel looked a bit like a rabbit in the headlights between the two of them though!
I agree, quite a tick box of contestants!

Exactly this.
If you're worried about 'normalising' it for kids, just say, 'Some people...' the way I presume you say, 'Some people have two daddies' etc.

Who’s the non-binary person?

You’re perfectly entitled to not watch but doing so because “DEI!!!!” Is just ridiculous. Non- white contestants, gay contestants, disabled contestants, ND contestants have been part of the Bake Off fold since it started. Because it reflects the society we live in. Shock horror, not just middle aged women and young middle class girls bake!

But it’s a show that casts to appeal to their viewing demographic, just like Big Brother, or I’m A Celebrity or Strictly Come Dancing, and apparently after it moved to Channel 4 in particular, its key core viewing demographic is 16 to 34 year olds, not that different from, say, Love Island. Hence the casting skewing younger.

It was never just about baking. Even after you eliminate all the brilliant and accomplished amateur bakers who would never apply because it would be their idea of hell, choosing the twelve best bakers who did apply, purely on merit, would probably produce dull TV.

Even as far back as season 3, Danny Bryden in her blog is quite upfront about her set not even being the twelve best bakers who applied, but the twelve best bakers who applied who fitted certain demographic types. She said she was surprised she’d been selected, but thought that they’d chosen her precisely because she had no ambitions to change jobs to anything baking related, unlike John Waite, who was very ambitious, and Brendan, who had strong ideas about taking baking into care homes to work with dementia sufferers.

Plus, the application form is specifically designed, I gather, to weed out the people who only bake one specific type of thing (eg people who are more decorating obsessives, or have a very limited range). Ideally they want people who cook as well as bake, and use unusual ingredients, otherwise everything is pretty limited. Then you’re phoned by production researchers for a phone interview, and not just because they’re checking your claims — they want to see if you’re interesting, vivacious, eccentric in a way that will translate to screen. Someone monosyllabic who just keeps their head down and bakes efficiently and well isn’t good tv. Then you move to a screen test.

And GBBO, is ‘comfort tv’, so they also want bakers who they think are unlikely to lash out if someone takes their ice cream cake out of the fridge or accidentally steals their custard. In that sense it’s the opposite of reality shows that cast for conflict.

I was listening to The Rest is Entertainment yesterday, and it had a special episode on the origins of Big Brother. The woman who won the season Jade Goody was in had said she’d known immediately from the group selection day that Jade would be selected because she rubbed everyone up the wrong way, and was selected for a mock ‘eviction” by literally everyone.

That wouldn’t work on GBBO.
