Crying at bake off

NigellasNeck · 23/09/2026 12:04

I cried when Molly dropped her cake. Just a few tears.

I'm a saddo aren't I?

I think it's because she has veneers so has to bite on the side which looks a bit odd.

Does having veneers mean you can't use your front teeth to bite?
I've vaguely thought about getting them, but that might put me off.

It's making me wonder if I'm being cavalier with mine! I was told to avoid crunchy baguettes and to cut up my apples, otherwise I just eat normally and no issues so far.

So soft cakes shouldn't be a problem for Nigella then? Unless she was told to be more cautious.

takealettermsjones · 30/09/2026 11:58

I'm still wondering whether Nigella has had some health issues. Her speech and her eating are definitely a bit different but her hand also shook when she took bites of some things.

I watched a short excerpt of a radio interview she did on Insta earlier and she seemed to be talking fine. I didn't notice the shaky hand. I don't have a steady hand myself at the best of times, and in front of cameras and being watched by Paul Hollywood and nervous bakers I think I'd be even shakier!
I do hope she's OK.

I am astonished anyone genuinely believes having a PA to assist gives Molly an unfair advantage!

They'll be passing stuff, getting things out of/into the oven, not icing cakes and whipping cream! If anything, it takes longer particularly if you haven't worked with the PA for long, as you have to think of what you want to do - tell the other person - then they do it, and potentially then tell them 'no not like that, like this'... Vs 'think of thing to do - do thing'.

What I meant was that previously you sounded affronted by everyone who you called a DEI hire, but now I realise it’s particularly this throuple thing that you can’t deal with.
AFAIC, all relationships are fraught with potential risk and can easily crumble. The high rate of divorce among straight couples doesn’t exactly recommend heterosexual marriage.

oh no, DEI box ticking has long been tedious, this new iteration was just the cherry on top. You say that about 'hetero marriage' yet really don't have any data to support that seeing as gay marriage hasn'r been around for long and ....there is no other kind of marriage? So would you like to see polygamous marriages become legal. 9 men and 1 woman?

Shatteredremnants · 30/09/2026 18:42

I had wondered this on the throuple issue - if we’re saying it’s ok for an unmarried couple then logically polygamous marriages should be made legal (civil ones at least).

pineapplecrushed · 30/09/2026 18:46

AlwaysExtraHot · 29/09/2026 18:10

Your two sentences somewhat cancel each other out. If there weren't any 'DEI ticks' then most of the bakers would be straight, white and 40.
Who exactly DO you want?

no they don't contradict each other. Some DEI ticks are fine.

I haven't actually said anything about marriage in relation to throuples. I know I invoked the high rate of divorce among straight couples, but that's just because it's an easy data point as obviously divorce is recorded. I don't know the break-up rate for straight couples who aren't married, but wonder if it's around the same as the divorce rate.

You seem very fixated on the idea of polygamous marriage. It's quite an extreme reaction to one man on a TV show who lives in a throuple. Are you genuinely worried that the fabric of society is about to be torn asunder by people becoming polygamous? Or are you just doing a bit of fire and brimstone tub-thumping?

I'm genuinely asking people to consider why we have a norm of pair bonds in western society. You seem to think that it's some mad extrapolation that throuples will become a 'thing' who then want to legalise their union and fight for that 'right'. Once that happens it is a legal gatweway to approve unions of more people. Why should throuples have a right to marry but not 4 people?

you asked and I answered. you were the one that made out that I was averse to anyone on a show other than straight white 40 year olds. I'm not. But when a whole show is dedicated to choosing contestants who all have some sort of minority status then it srarts to feel like forced propaganda.

It's the sheer arrogance of saying that 'some' people who happen to fit a minority profile are acceptable. Who do you think you are? Genuine question. And which ones, out of interest, do you consider not acceptable?

And does it ever occur to you that a brown/disabled/gay person appearing on a TV show might not be there simply to fulfil some sort of DEI tick-list or act as 'forced propaganda' Hmm? That there just are brown/disabled/gay people in the UK, and some of them bake, and some of them bake well enough to go on the show? Why should a viewer who is disabled or not white not have people on a TV show who look like them when white and non-disabled people do?
And why do you say it's 'a whole show'? Have you not noticed the people who are white/British/both?

It has been pointed out repeatedly that there seems to have been a shift from 'bakes divinely, happens to be of, eg, Bangladeshi descent' (Nadiya) and 'does drag and part of a throuple, awesome, can probably turn the oven on' (Gabe).

If you're a TV producer it's brilliant. If you're interested in actual baking, it grates.

For starters I'll say again, it's not me you were having the conversation with about pair bonds.
But anyway, you said yourself (arguing for how outrageous it is that Gabe is on the show) 'a throuple isn't something any significant amount of people are doing. It doesn't need 'representation'. So – leaving aside the weird idea that, if someone doesn't represent the majority or a norm, they don't need representation on TV – are you upset because you think there are loads of throuples/bigger partner groups lurking in this country and we're going to turn into a polyamorous nation? Or because there aren't significant numbers of people living in throuples? Which one is it?

But I tell you what, why don't we come back in five or ten years and, if register offices are full every day of people getting married in throuples, or groups of four, or whatever your prurient imagination is conjuring up, you can tell me you told me so?

Why are you using reductio ad absurdum? He's manifestly better at baking than that.

He's ok, but he makes lots of mistakes and is manifestly not one of the best bakers in Britain. Most of them aren't.

These contestants have been selected for TV, not baking talent. It's a bit annoying, that's all.

AlwaysExtraHot · 01/10/2026 10:24

I'm sure the producers would happily tell you that they select a range of people, for interest and – yes! – representing the variety of people who live in the UK. But to suggest they've been selected purely for TV, not for baking talent at all, is really weird, considering that candidates have to bring in samples of their bakes for an audition panel to taste, and do a screen test that includes baking under pressure, then later on bake in front of the production team and judges.
