To absolutely hate this government, and what they are doing to our country?

Strong words but is is how I feel at this point in time. All of them make me feel physically sick. The latest example -

No wonder Labour won't cut benefits. More than half of Burnham's MPs represent seats where claimant count is higher than their Commons majority

https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16147745/No-wonder-Labour-wont-cut-benefits-half-Burnhams-MPs-represent-seats-claimant-count-higher-Commons-majority.html

Half of Labour MPs in seats where PIP claims are higher than majority

Some 212 Labour MPs in England and Wales have more constituents on Personal Independence Payment (PIP) than their winning margin at the 2024 general election .

It is 100% correct. Sorry to disappoint you in your unfounded arrogance. Look at the migration observatory facts. Sigh.

OPs facts are wrong. Immigration and asylum seekers are down since Labour came to power.

How many people are in the UK asylum system?

I agree, thanks placey. What? is quite valid. Always has been. One of the foundations of questioning. Along with Why? Where? When? Who?

Nobody cares about genuine disability and asylum claims. It's pointless getting yourself dragged down a rabbit hole. Anyone with common sense understands bogus claims are the issue and that's up to the relevant authorities to determine those. We know those claims do exist.

Are you aligning PIP awards with asylum awards?

As a small business owner, I feel despair. We are trying to exist alongside a Government that doesn't want us to succeed and employ people.

As a mother/grandmother, I feel even more despair at the undocumented men we're giving a red carpet to on a daily basis.

You have my empathy, I sold up and couldn’t be happier after 20+ years of running a business this government have killed it. To be fair having survived Covid and rishi throwing us under a bus as well I really didn’t think it could get any worse, and here we are.

I remember it well. It was a thick paste and very difficult to shake off the spoon.

Maybe stop blindly believing everything published by a right wing pressure group.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/pip-claims-uc-health-figures-benefit-changes-timms-welfare-b3050318.html

The above articles were literally published days ago and clearly state only 4.1million claim PIP - that doesn’t equate to 1 in 10.

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/annual-dwp-benefits-statistics-compendium-2026/annual-dwp-benefits-statistics-compendium-2026

The above also shows that in March 2026 the numbers were closer to 3.9 million - again nowhere near one in ten.

And as I’ve said, disabilities aren’t always visible. I guarantee that there are many people in your life who would be considered to have a disability for the purposes of both the equality act and claiming PIP and you wouldn’t have a clue unless they told you - people with cancer, MS, epilepsy, HIV, heart disease, COPD, PTSD - the list is endless.

It’s also a sad fact that at any point in life, you or someone you love could and probably will find yourself unexpectedly suffering with one of these illnesses and struggling to work/cover the extra expenses associated with them, so perhaps don’t be so quick to judge and have a tiny bit of compassion. None of us ever think it’ll happen to us, but trust me it does.

Number of people claiming key disability benefit hits record high

An ongoing review into Personal Independence Payments (Pip) has found the system is "not fit for purpose".

You keep saying 'immigration and asylum seekers'. Putting them together is convenient for you and Labour isn't it? I understand. However asylum seeker numbers have risen since 2023. The stats in my link show as such. I am sorry that disappoints you.

A breakdown on the number of cases awaiting an appeal outcome and awaiting removal is not currently available beyond June 2024 due to work on the transition to a new caseworking system

This sounds a bit fishy - no update for two years?

Can you define genuine with your common sense?

Genuine is an adjective that means real, true, and exactly what it appears to be rather than fake, false, or artificial.

Working aged population of the UK is around 43m so if that was applied as the denominator to the above figure then it would be 1/10 of that but I have no idea if the same age group is relates to Pip.

It emerged in June 2026 that almost one in ten Brits receive personal independence payments (PIP) in England and Wales, with 108 local authority areas out of 318 coming in above one in ten.

If anyone believes that 1 in 10 English / Welsh people are actually disabled - they're kidding themselves.

No one is saying that those who need it shouldn't get it. No one says that (I hope).

But those that are taking the piss need to be stopped. 6.2 million people are not disabled. For eg. Mild autism is not a disability, mild ADHD is not a disability. Not wanting to leave the house is not a disability. etc.

Edited

10 per cent? Most studies suggest than well over 10 per cent have some form of disability. Close to 25%. Even at the beginning of the century, it was estimated at 18%. And I'm referring to people of working age, not the elderly.

Not wanting to leave the house is not on its own a disability, but if it is caused by severe mental illness such as agoraphobia it may be. Autism and ADHD are disabilities; they may or may not add to the expense of daily life sufficiently to justify a PIP award (most people with just ADHD do not receive PIP).

So the number of people estimated to have some form of disability is more than twice the number of people who receive PIP. There are plenty of people who have some form of disability and have never even tried to claim PIP. (Me for instance.) There seems to be a tendency for people to underestimate the numbers of people with some degree of disability or illness and therefore to assume that large numbers of people who seek any form of help or adaptation (not just benefits) are undeserving. And that can result in a lot of unfairness.

Meandthegherkin · 21/09/2026 23:30

I assume much of the post-Covid growth is due to NHS waiting lists as it’s reported to be a pattern unique to the UK so it must be due to UK-specific factors.

GaIadriel · 21/09/2026 23:40

I think 'post covid growth' is a widespread medical condition. 🤣

GaIadriel · 21/09/2026 23:42

One might even say a problem of considerable size.
