To absolutely hate this government, and what they are doing to our country?

Strong words but is is how I feel at this point in time. All of them make me feel physically sick. The latest example -

No wonder Labour won't cut benefits. More than half of Burnham's MPs represent seats where claimant count is higher than their Commons majority

Half of Labour MPs in seats where PIP claims are higher than majority

Some 212 Labour MPs in England and Wales have more constituents on Personal Independence Payment (PIP) than their winning margin at the 2024 general election .

As nobody is willing to define 'those who need it', plenty are saying it indirectly.

Exactly. And I don't think they really care who gets hurt along the way.

I'm yet to meet somebody that thinks genuinely deserving disabled people shouldn't be looked after. It's all the pisstakers that people have an issue with, although I've no idea how you'd address the latter without impacting some of the former in the process.

But I often think of the asst Taekwondo teacher I had as a teen. He walked with a stick and used to apparently claim to have a bad back and reduced mobility. However, once the doors were shut he was somehow capable of doing some pretty amazing jumping spin kicks and vigorous sparring etc.

I try to be open minded before I judge people but it was pretty hard in this case I'll admit!

How long ago was that? Because I think it's pretty difficult for people now to claim. I believe you're allowed to claim for being addicted to substances which makes me wonder if that's part of the reason for more people claiming. Along with anxiety/depression.

All these things are prevalent in deprived areas. The way that things have gone since Brexit (which the Scottish people did not vote for and should have been allowed a similar agreement as they did in Ni - but I digress), covid and cost of living increase, mean there is an increase in people struggling with these things and they'll need GP evidence of them.

Yes, you'll always get chancers, but I truly believe they are in the minority.

'Thousands' of Bulgarians defrauding the British taxpayer - one reason not to rejoin the EU.

Similar problem with Romanians and student loans - obvious scam still ongoing under Labour;

It emerged in June 2026 that almost one in ten Brits receive personal independence payments (PIP) in England and Wales, with 108 local authority areas out of 318 coming in above one in ten.

If anyone believes that 1 in 10 English / Welsh people are actually disabled - they're kidding themselves.

No one is saying that those who need it shouldn't get it. No one says that (I hope).

But those that are taking the piss need to be stopped. 6.2 million people are not disabled. For eg. Mild autism is not a disability, mild ADHD is not a disability. Not wanting to leave the house is not a disability. etc.

Edited

More than 50% of them are in the over 50s age group. They used to get DLP and were moved to PIP after the reforms.

I suppose they could start with a sort of hierarchy of needs. A bit like Maslow's hierarchy of needs (triangle), but obviously, different parameters. The first and most important need would be those with physical disabilities. This can not be argued with by anyone. And so on.

Can you explain "genuinely deserving disabled'. What does that entail?

There's a person currently on Big Brother who is a quadruple amputee. Do they deserve PIP?

Is cash going to help an addict out though? I know someone who blames cash benefits for killing get alcoholic father. Surely the money would be better spent on rehab centres, the ONLY thing that seems to work in helping rid themselves of their addiction for good.

We need to stop the cash handouts and provide services instead. People who need a sophisticated wheelchair shouldn’t be grubbing around saving cash each month, they should be given the wheelchair instead. Depressed people should be given jobs and therapy, not cash. Addicts should be given rehab. We need to turn people who could work into workers, not just write them off. That would leave more money for those who genuinely will never work.

They shouldn’t get cash handouts, they should get goods to help them lead as normal life as possible.

Cash handouts? So 'goods' as in a motability car, carers, actual people, for dressing and toileting?

The Bulgarians? The fraud in the article started in 2016 - Boris Johnson became prime minister July 2019.

And again you have this wrong - you seriously do yourself no favours with this wilful refusal to run a quick fact check against the poison you’re reading. Only 4.09 million people claim PIP - when there’s a population of 69 million people in the UK that doesn’t equate to 10% does it. The one in ten figure that’s constantly bandied around by right wing rags only applies to certain demographics.

And perhaps you might need to reassess what disability means for the purposes of the Equality Act and for the purposes of claiming PIP. Someone doesn’t have to be a wheelchair user or missing a limb to be classed as disabled. Having long term illnesses such as cancer can mean that you qualify for PIP. Considering roughly 3.5 million people in the UK are currently living with cancer, does that not shift your perspective a bit?? Would you ever be heartless enough to tell a cancer patient that they’re pulling the wool and don’t require any financial support during treatment?

Some posters on this thread don't think much of the Telegraph.

I see they have included pensions in their analysis - excluding pensions would likely throw up a different result.
