To absolutely hate this government, and what they are doing to our country?

Strong words but is is how I feel at this point in time. All of them make me feel physically sick. The latest example -

No wonder Labour won't cut benefits. More than half of Burnham's MPs represent seats where claimant count is higher than their Commons majority

Half of Labour MPs in seats where PIP claims are higher than majority

Some 212 Labour MPs in England and Wales have more constituents on Personal Independence Payment (PIP) than their winning margin at the 2024 general election .

It sure is.

And yet you questioned me.

So what about a person who has early onset dementia, mid forties. Limbs all intact. Are they disabled.

What about a young man, looks lovely, extremely vulnerable due to learning disabilities. Are they disabled?

CoventryCity · 21/09/2026 22:02

It emerged in June 2026 that almost one in ten Brits receive personal independence payments (PIP) in England and Wales, with 108 local authority areas out of 318 coming in above one in ten.

If anyone believes that 1 in 10 English / Welsh people are actually disabled - they're kidding themselves.

No one is saying that those who need it shouldn't get it. No one says that (I hope).

But those that are taking the piss need to be stopped. 6.2 million people are not disabled. For eg. Mild autism is not a disability, mild ADHD is not a disability. Not wanting to leave the house is not a disability. etc.

Edited

I agree.

But to come at it from a different angle...

I've got ADHD and Dyspraxia. My ADHD affected me badly as a kid due to my poor emotional regulation (was removed from mainstream education for a few years for doing things like stabbing other kids with pens and hitting them over the head with objects, always bully types or older kids). Just mentioning that to be clear I'm not one of the people who mostly got through life ok and was diagnosed as an adult when relatively stable. I was pretty wild as a youth.

However, I'm only just past 30 now and doing great, despite really struggling in an office environment in my 20s. Most dyspraxic people struggle with driving cars but I drive trucks and heavy plant almost daily, often around city centres. Although I might take longer to grasp most physical skills I don't seem any worse than most people once the pathways are developed. In many cases I'm well above average which I put down to being quite analytical and competitive and never being complacent which is mostly just a product of being restless all the time.

Made almost £60k last year and have zero debts so don't think I'd feel justified claiming PIP because I just don't need it. But I'd probs be able to give it a fair shot if I wanted with it not being means tested. I believe ADHD alone is a 43% success rate but with a comorbid condition the chances can be much higher.

I reckon a lot of people in my position would give it a punt - I've defo had a few suggest it to me. But tbh I don't even tell employers nowadays and only my friends know. I feel I'd be taking the piss if I were to try and claim and it's not whether anybody else knew. It's more a matter of principle.

Brexit happened in June 2016.

'Thousands' of Bulgarians were complicit in fraud because of Brexit? Well, that's not very nice is it.

Brudffaa · 21/09/2026 22:38

TBF before Brexit there was a big issue with Eastern European crime gangs. Look at the street scammers in Paris as well

More than half of Labour MPs represent seats where there is a greater number of disability benefit claimants than the size of their majority, an analysis has revealed.

Some 212 Labour MPs in England and Wales have more constituents on Personal Independence Payment (PIP) than their winning margin at the 2024 general election.

This is 58 per cent of the party's total 366 seats across the two countries, the analysis by The Times found.

And? Do you want disabled people to be deprived of the vote or something?

Millions of Bulgarians, approximately 6 million of them, didn't come to the UK.

And again you have this wrong - you seriously do yourself no favours with this wilful refusal to run a quick fact check against the poison you’re reading. Only 4.09 million people claim PIP - when there’s a population of 69 million people in the UK that doesn’t equate to 10% does it. The one in ten figure that’s constantly bandied around by right wing rags only applies to certain demographics.

And perhaps you might need to reassess what disability means for the purposes of the Equality Act and for the purposes of claiming PIP. Someone doesn’t have to be a wheelchair user or missing a limb to be classed as disabled. Having long term illnesses such as cancer can mean that you qualify for PIP. Considering roughly 3.5 million people in the UK are currently living with cancer, does that not shift your perspective a bit?? Would you ever be heartless enough to tell a cancer patient that they’re pulling the wool and don’t require any financial support during treatment?

Again? I have posted nothing in accurate so far.

They shouldn’t get cash handouts, they should get goods to help them lead as normal life as possible.

Why should you be deprived of the power to make your own choices just because you're disabled?

ToWhitToWhoo · 21/09/2026 22:44

YABU. One doesn't have to be a fan of the government (I don't LOVE them, though I prefer Burnham to Starmer; Starmer to Sunak; Sunak to Truss; and all of them to Farage!) But help for ill and disabled people should be one of the LAST things to be cut, not the first thing!

Why not when other benefits are cash?

GaIadriel · 21/09/2026 22:48

I'm still a bit undecided about fat people claiming benefits solely on the basis of being fat though, but I'm reserving judgement as it's a pretty complex issue. I'd say chicken and egg in some cases but with at least a sizeable minority (pardon the pun) it's down to avoidable choices IMHO.

They shouldn’t get cash handouts, they should get goods to help them lead as normal life as possible.

So officials should be put in charge of deciding what goods people with different disabilities need? If done properly, this would be extremely expensive; if (as likely) not, it would just be an excuse to deprive people.

And disabled people are more likely to need to pay for various forms of assistance than goods,

And why are these polls on these threads always 7 days?

GaIadriel · 21/09/2026 22:00

I wasn't really suggesting we scrutinise people to see how 'deserving' they are, even if necessarily this is part of the official process. I meant people who have a need as opposed to those that are just blagging piss takers.

Nobody cares about genuine disability and asylum claims. It's pointless getting yourself dragged down a rabbit hole. Anyone with common sense understands bogus claims are the issue and that's up to the relevant authorities to determine those. We know those claims do exist.

Not read the full thread, but yes, you are being very unreasonable.
It could be a lot worse ffs, we could have the fuckwits in restore or reform in charge, or more of the fucking tories.

I quite like my freedom and being able to pay my bills. I also like having access to the police, NHS, fire brigade, roads I can drive on. I like knowing the most vulnerable in our society will be looked after and that this is also what the majority of the people I the country want

I wouldn't trade that for the racist thugs that like to cause criminal damage, terrify the local population when they turn up in the silly shorts and pathetic face coverings because they are too cowardly to show their faces for anything.

That's all the right wing care about.

Define a genuine disability claimant and I will believe otherwise.

Until then, it's just another vulnerable section of society they would prefer didn't exist.
