To think that the dressing gown was one step too far?

In a petrol station buying a coffee at nine thirty in the morning. Looking down realised that the young woman behind me was wearing obvious pyjamas. And slippers. Then looking up to see a fluffy cream dressing gown.

I can't decide if it matters. I was brought up to believe that it shows a complete lack of self respect, and a lack of respect for anyone else, but does it, these days?

YABU. Perfectly normal wear for filling up your car.

YANBU. What is the world coming to that anyone thinks that's reasonable.

It's a fashion statement. You do this when you're spending all day in bed and only leave the house because you have to.

You're just jealous because she probably has a massive house and has no need to work.

So I have to live my life in case I see a member of staff outside in the wild and that person happens to be a knob who would judge what I’m wearing outside of work? That’s mental. I’ll keep being me. God you lot have too much time on your hands. It’s blowing me mind - but also v funny to me - that people are genuinely walking around getting worked up about what other people are wearing!! If I had nipple clamps and a thong on you’d have a point but come on!

Most people are knobs then as most agree it’s embarrassing and absolutely no need for it

The only time I've ever been out in pyjamas was driving to pick my partner up from an event. I never got out of the car.

Those people who think it's fine, nobody's business etc, I guess you'd all be happy for your children's teachers to turn up to work in pyjamas? Doctors wearing jimjams in the surgery? Having your hair coloured and cut by someone in a negligee? Because we must not judge...

It would be interesting to know if this is a truly English phenomenon. It really is a thing, sadly and we have all witnessed it. There does seem to be a prevailing attitude of “whose business is it how I dress or what I look like” doesn’t there?

Nope! Here in Ireland too as other PP's have said

Affluent, higher earner, but still wouldn’t do it. Never run out of wine, just go to the cellar and don’t own PJs or Uggs.

Oh no I live in either Uggs or runners.. whoops! 😂

Unless I'm going "out" out 😇

Friendlygingercat · Today 02:48

Saturday I had to call a taxi and make an emergency trip to a pharmacy. I wore an ankle length kaftan, shoes and socks, and a hip length over mack. I had no underwear on under the kaftan which covered me from neck to ankle. Its fair to add that the pharmacy was in a huge branch of Asda in an ethnic minority area so many Asian ladies with ankle length clothes and head scarves. I doubt if anyone noticed anything out of the ordinary, I only noticed what other people were wearing because I had to wait for my prescription.

Yep, as above, it's the tip of an iceberg.

On it's own; it's a woman in a pair of PJs, hurting no one. But it's a sign of not giving a shit.

And other people being ok that people don't give a shit.

We have to do stuff we don't want to. And we have to steer those who can't be bothered or can't face it back on the path. Not just turn a blind eye and think 'oh great! i wont bother getting dressed in future either then!'
If we all really just do whatever the fuck we like society will slowly collapse. It's those who do give a shit (or don't have the luxury of not) which keep it going.

So yes - a woman in a pair of PJs in the bloody petrol station does say to me 'society is slowly breaking down'.

Get bloody dressed people!

Swearing is just as bad if not worse

Surely you jest. Taking debit cards out of their pants/knickers??

They only use cash and yes, they keep it in their bras or knickers.

Would i do it ? No and I love my pj's , slippers and dressing gown , would i give a shit if someone else done it ? Also no .

I find it a bit grim and grubby. Feels a bit intimate to see someone in their pyjamas. The only people I expect to see in nightwear are DH, my DCs, and very close friends.

Ah now you've got something there. I couldn't work out why I was uncomfortable about it, given that I leave the house every day with wet hair and no makeup.

But it's clothes you would normally only expect to see on someone you're very close to, so it feels wrong to be standing in a till queue next to them.

GreenGrassGold · Today 08:35

I did this before. I went to ASDA looking like that Because I lacked self awareness and I thought it was "cool" to look comfortable like that outside the house, because I wanted to exude the image of "not giving a fck about what people think" until I learned and matured. I just knew the people in ASDA were secretly judging me 🤣🤣🤣 and rightly so!

KalamityKat · Today 08:48

I wouldn't go to the shop in my PJs - partly because I don't wear any! - but I'd just assume this woman had just discovered she had no milk or the milk was off and she needed it for the kids' breakfast and popped to the local garage, she's not hurting anyone.
Not pyjamas, but I saw a man in Sainsbury's last week with bare feet and painted toe nails !
Painted toe nails on a man is unusual, but whatever floats his boat, but wandering around the supermarket barefoot is a step too far for me.
It's a big, out of town Sainsbury as well, so he had either driven and walked through the car park barefoot, or walked at least 15 minutes to get there. Ugh !

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · Today 08:49

I'm with you OP. Its just lazy and slovenly. It says a lot about someone who finds it too much effort to change out of their sleepwear to pop to the shop.

NorthSouthLondon · Today 09:09

This thread is amazingly entertaining to me.
I come from Italy and I remember a friend telling me how she really hated living there. She found people in her town to be way too traditionalist, too judgemental, always pointing fingers, particularly when it came to clothing.

"Not like England!", she would say. "There people do not care! You could go out in your pajamas and nobody would care!"

I am laughing so hard, thinking of that.

I’m on holiday too and there were two women at breakfast wearing under eye masks (I don’t have a problem with that, just thought they looked funny!)

CrazyMidget · Today 09:30

I saw a young man in the post office once in his pyjamas and dressing gown! 🤣 I thought it was funny. Let it all hang out, why don’t you! 🤣 I assumed he lived in one of the very nearby flats. It is a little odd, though. I have pulled on the nearest thing to nip down to the shop, but that would be tracksuit bottoms and a jacket. I don’t think I could bring myself to actually step out in my slippers, pyjamas, and dressing gown - it would feel so odd! I’d feel extremely self-conscious, and a little vulnerable.

I live in a block of flats on a high floor. I wfh and live alone, and it’s been so hot that I’ve spent the summer in my knickers, basically. I ordered a cheap pull-on dress that cost very little, to throw on to go downstairs for the post and deliveries. Saved me from finding jeans and a top just to go downstairs.

I think it’s another sign of declining standards in society. It is at the more benign end, with littering and putting your iPad on with loud volume on public transport somewhere in the middle, and then aggressive and violent behaviour at the other end. It’s depressing and I can’t see it getting better any time soon.

It may seem benign - but isn't this the 'broken window' effect or whatever it's called?

You'd think she would have put on an outdoor coat and some shoes to travel to hospital, though, not a very fluffy nearly white dressing gown and slippers?

I have been in multiple NYC bodegas with “no bra money” signs. Sometimes they’re more colourfully written.

also in the US, you will find high school and college students going to class in pyjamas.

It’s not about race. It’s what they actually do!

A couple of traveller families kids got into my DC’s school they were much younger than my DC’s so I didn’t have any interaction with them. But they would park on double yellow lines and come to pick the kids up from school at 3.15pm still in PJ’s dressing gowns and fluffy slippers.

upupandaway45 · Today 10:16

Those offended and outraged by a dressing gown or PJs baffle me! You’d be less bothered if a topless woman was strolling about but a woman wearing pjs and a dressing gown is the disgrace to society 🤣 such backwardness.

I wouldn’t say either are a disgrace to society. Both are idiots looking for attention, the difference is that I would assume that the topless lady was showered and had some pride even if she had her breasts on show, there is something scruffy about wearing a nightgown in public. They can do what they like. I can assume that they are lazy people, illness aside which you can usually see, if someone is too ill to dress, not grabbing a breakfast roll in their scruffs.
