To think that the dressing gown was one step too far?

In a petrol station buying a coffee at nine thirty in the morning. Looking down realised that the young woman behind me was wearing obvious pyjamas. And slippers. Then looking up to see a fluffy cream dressing gown.

I can't decide if it matters. I was brought up to believe that it shows a complete lack of self respect, and a lack of respect for anyone else, but does it, these days?

YABU. Perfectly normal wear for filling up your car.

Not necessarily. At a weekend, I’m more likely to be washed if I’m in pyjamas. I don’t shower every day, and at the weekend I often shower and then put on clean pyjamas.

I don’t go out in them though (but might go out in lounge wear that looks like pyjamas).

The local shop in my village always has some chav in a dressing gown going in there (not the same one I must add)

Yes, but then I have never really understood dressing gowns because they just seem to get in the way. If you are wearing pyjamas just put on a jumper.

I'm not really bothered about the respect element in a garage.

Imagine said woman purchases a large box of Coco Pops and a pint of milk. In her fluffy slippers, she casually shuffles back to her car and places the cereal and milk on the bonnet. The milk is poured into the cereal box and a spoon is procured from the dressing gown pocket. She then proceeds to eat the cereal out of the box whilst standing in the forecourt. I really wish I was making this up but it really happened.

Yeah, this is standard with the travellers in my area. Except I'm in the West of England. And they don't always pay!

No, my everyday life is quite uneventful thanks! After all “grim” = bit grubby, not suggesting the person should be put to death.

I was seriously ill I hospital a couple of years ago and confined to bed but I was horrified at having to be in pj’s or a hospital gown all the time! I begged and pleaded to be able to get dressed and ‘sit out’ . Being in sleepwear any longer than what the garments are designed for is just slobby IMO.

I might do a double take but generally I just don’t care if ppl have pyjamas on. Ur kidding urself on if u think everyone fully dressed is washed and clean, as long as noones privates r out I couldn’t care less

More me, me, me culture. Not giving a toss about others. Sitting on public transport with phone on speaker so everyone has to listen to the two way conversation. Or looking at a movie or TikTok without headphones in restaurants or a train or plane or any public place, not giving a toss that it’s disturbing others. Thinking you don’t have to queue, it’s fine to barge in front of others because, you know, you’re in a hurry and why should you wait. Thinking why should you pay for sone thing in a shop when you can just walk out without paying. Thinking you can make as much noise as you like in your garden because why give a toss about the person the other side of the fence. It’s parking your car wherever/however in your estate because who cares that others need to park too. It’s sending your child into primary school not bothering to toilet train them first (special needs or illness aside, of course). It’s thinking it’s fine for your child to run riot in a restaurant or cafe. Its think its fine not to encourage your child to share or take their turn in a playground. The list goes on.

Basically it’s people having no respect for others.

It doesn't bother me. I don't have a lie in on a Sunday as I choose to get up and go swimming, but if people are lounging around in bed and realise they ran out of coffee or want breakfast in bed and nip out to get something, just throwing a dressing gown on, fair play to them. I'm now lounging about on the sofa after lunch and being thoroughly unproductive myself. So what?

It's grubby, and it's not nice. But some people just don't have any standards any more.

Society was judgy and horrible when I was a kid in the 1980s. Racist, sexist, and homophobic, and a shit ton of internalised misogyny. It has got much, much better IMO. I find people nicer and kinder to one another in general and they keep their opinions to themselves more on things which are none of their business. I think some people have some seriously rose-tinted glasses on about the past.

That poster was making an observation about a cultural norm, it's very relevant if that cultural behaviour is the exact behaviour the the OP started the thread about. It's merely an observation.

I work and live in a fairly wealthy area that is quite diverse in terms of race and culture. I have never seen anyone in public in PJs or slippers. I've heard people who live in less affluent areas say they see this regularly.

Total agreement here. I live near their 'ancestral home' and regularly meet them in the shop or pharmacy wearing pj's. It seems there's very little middle ground, its either pj's or dressed up in very revealing clothes, lots of makeup and such incredible high heel but it saddens me to see the excessive use of sunbeds in the community, the young girls are definitely asking for skin issues later in life from over use in order to have their skin as tanned as possible.

Well it wasn’t intended as a dictionary definition, I was simply explaining what the word “grim” connotes for me. But words can hold different meaning to different people so it’s ok if it means something different to you, or if your standards of hygiene are lower. It’s just a forum of opinions after all.
