To think that the dressing gown was one step too far?

In a petrol station buying a coffee at nine thirty in the morning. Looking down realised that the young woman behind me was wearing obvious pyjamas. And slippers. Then looking up to see a fluffy cream dressing gown.

I can't decide if it matters. I was brought up to believe that it shows a complete lack of self respect, and a lack of respect for anyone else, but does it, these days?

YABU. Perfectly normal wear for filling up your car.

YANBU. What is the world coming to that anyone thinks that's reasonable.

YANBU. Grown adults going out in public without washing or dressing is grim.

I would never do it and I do think "😬" when I see people doing it. I certainly don't think they are disrespecting me personally when I see it though

I think it’s another sign of declining standards in society. It is at the more benign end, with littering and putting your iPad on with loud volume on public transport somewhere in the middle, and then aggressive and violent behaviour at the other end. It’s depressing and I can’t see it getting better any time soon.

I work in a supermarket in Ireland and this is perfectly normal in the travelling community. They don’t carry purses or handbags so take their money either out of their bra or knickers to pay me. It’s absolutely disgusting but not worth saying anything due to the abuse I’d get from them.

Well even if they are dressed in day clothes how do you know someone has washed?

I saw a young woman (maybe early 20s) shopping in the supermarket with what might’ve been her mum the other day. She was in full pyjamas, slippers and grubby-looking dressing gown. I did think ‘what the fuck’ and I’m not ashamed to admit it!

I never get the outrage at this. How do you know the people walking around in clothes haven’t slept in them or if they’ve even washed that day. Pjs/dressing gowns are clothes 🤷🏻‍♀️my pjs even look like clothes

Yep, as above, it's the tip of an iceberg.

On it's own; it's a woman in a pair of PJs, hurting no one. But it's a sign of not giving a shit.

And other people being ok that people don't give a shit.

We have to do stuff we don't want to. And we have to steer those who can't be bothered or can't face it back on the path. Not just turn a blind eye and think 'oh great! i wont bother getting dressed in future either then!'
If we all really just do whatever the fuck we like society will slowly collapse. It's those who do give a shit (or don't have the luxury of not) which keep it going.

So yes - a woman in a pair of PJs in the bloody petrol station does say to me 'society is slowly breaking down'.

I wouldn’t do it. If I saw it, I’d eye roll and think it weird but not get wound up about it or think she was disrespecting me.

For me it screams chav/mental health/unemployed.

I would do a double-take only. It doesn’t take long to throw on a pair of jeans and a tshirt.

It’s about standards, it’s about manners and knowing there’s a time and place for everything. PJ’s are clothes - for wearing in bed. Dressing gowns are for indoors - jackets/coats are for outdoors.

I’m not sure I get the level of outrage about this. It’s not something I would do, ever. I don’t know anyone who does it. But when I see other people doing it, it doesn’t really impact on my life.

It doesn’t seem much odder as a decision than so many Mners getting into their pyjamas at 5.30 pm after getting in from work.

I wouldn't do it myself but don't clutch my pearls at anyone else doing it.
