There was a similar thread a couple of years ago but it quickly sank into posters arguing and correcting grammar so it quickly became very boring…
So, here’s mine, triggered by 9/11 memories:
9/11. TV on most of the day updating etc. Naturally, because it was a news programme on all day, it was repetitive. He moaned about the repetition.
When the early evening news came on and obviously it was the first big story my partner at the time said “They’re spoiling it now, keep showing it over and over”
I said (something like) “Spoiling what? The thrill and excitement of seeing thousands people die in horrific circumstances?”
I despised him from that moment.

  1. For not recognising that a TV news channel is repetitive and not everyone is watching it all day.
  2. For using the word ‘spoil’ under such circumstances, as if watching it was some sort of entertainment.
I absolutely despised him from that moment. AIBU to absolutely despise someone based on one comment? I don’t think so!

A new male CEO who visited the office of a previous employer.

The office was open plan and he passed a comment on how irritating it was hearing chatter come from different directions. I was thinking finally someone agreed with me when he added ‘I mean, you guys are women so it’s just normal for you, but for men it’s bloody annoying’.

Respect level instantly at zero, and I knew I was now working for a company headed by sleazy misogynistic boors, as he was always surrounded by his group of Teflon men.

It wasn’t long before I left.

I recently had a lift with someone who complained his colleague about to undergo operation and treatment for cancer 'didnt have his mind in the job'

Apparently he should leave worrying about his cancer at home and just get on with his job

I was speechless and really wished I had pulled him up about it

I’m thinking he meant spoiling the impact and seriousness of it rather than spoil the entertainment of it. As in people may become desensitised to it, if the coverage becomes too much.

My friends husband who, at their wedding when their small child was doing something he didn't like "do that again and I'll break your fingers". I knew he was absolutely thick before that but this just cemented it. I am as irritated with her as I am with him, that's not how she was brought up, she's not unintelligent, why has she had children with this man.

Trillie · 12/09/2026 19:34

I don’t know about despising him, I think we had the same values and I would end the relationship.

YourWildAmberSloth · 12/09/2026 19:36

Friends boyfriend (now husband) 'joked' about liking jailbait, the younger the better. Disgusting!

As I said in my post, the memory was triggered by the 9/11 memories. Radio 4 every morning this week.

His choice of vocabulary (“spoil”) is disgusting, YANBU.

This has happened to me. Sometimes a “slip up” type comment shows someone’s true nature and you can’t unsee it.

I had 1 DC at the time who was 7 and when I told my mother I had been diagnosed with depression, all she said was “I had 4 of you to look after and you never heard me moaning”
Relations soured

Ifyounevergiveup · 12/09/2026 19:51

Happened just today. A friend of a friend texted her to “warn” her that a “coloured family” were coming to view the house next door. Vile. It’s the barefacedness of it that takes my breath away. (Has also planted a niggling doubt in my mind about my friend, which is unfair…I hope…)

I think we are siblings without knowing it!

Philmitchelle · 12/09/2026 19:55

It is pretty repetitive watching a news channel for a full day.

I wrote off a very good looking guy at uni the first time I heard him speak - he said something extremely lewd and derogatory about my body without realising I could hear him. I never spoke to him in three years.

Not “meditating on the very great pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow” then!

I'm so sorry about your nephew 🩵 I had a similar experience when one of my twin sons was stillborn and his twin brother died in the NICU 3 days later after life support was withdrawn. An in law said to me, "sure my aunt lost a baby at 6 months old, now that was hard, and he was a real baby"

Those words have never left me. That was 2.5 years ago but I was in such a stare of grief, I never challenged them.

So sorry for your loss.

CyanMaker · 12/09/2026 20:12

Something happened when I was 11 years old. I was at school and in class with my favorite teacher. Over the intercom came the announcement that president Kennedy had been shot and following that we were told we were dismissed early. So my teacher said "Ok lets go home and see the pictures of the bloody president on tv." Well that certainly destroyed my admiration and respect for him. His callousness had a profound effect on me.

SweetcornFritter · 12/09/2026 20:20

I was glued to the TV at work when 9/11 was happening in real time, was deeply troubled by it, crying, upset, especially as we lived near Heathrow at the time and there was a worry that there were many more hijacked planes in the air and who knew where they were headed and who was next. I had a young child at the time and despaired at her growing up in a world of such terrifying cruelty and destruction. I called my ex when I got home as he was working late to talk about it, and he couldn’t have shown less interest. He was like “oh yeah, heard about that, I’m going out for drinks so will be home late, see ya”. The next day he barely mentioned it, went to bed when the news came on, didn’t want to know anything about it. I thought it was bloody weird at the time and still do to this day.

YANBU This wasn’t someone I know personally. But I remember the verdict of the inquest into the Hillsborough disaster being all over the news and social media. An older woman said she was fed up of seeing it forget the fact it had only taken nearly 3 decades to come to the decision that the police were at fault. Honestly some people have no empathy.

pinkypoo8 · 12/09/2026 20:25

Oooh get you 🙄

I remember my mother being very upset one evening at home. The last straw for her with her FIL was when the last of the premature sextuplets had died and it was reported on the 6 o’clock news. FIL said “Good thing too” and seeing my mums shocked face clarified “they would never amount to anything”. We both despised that man - that was the final straw.

SparklyBrickViper · 12/09/2026 20:29

My then boyfriend (much older) had a habit of always causing an argument whenever we had a night out. On a weekend away for a wedding same old pattern happened again but this time he uttered “who the fuck do you think you are? You’re just a nobody from (insert village)”, and it finally woke me up.

Travelled home from the wedding on Sunday, ended the relationship on Monday.

WobblyJogger · 12/09/2026 20:38

My DH had an accident at work 6 weeks before our wedding.
DH's cousin came to our wedding with her new fiancee, a solicitor. We'd never met him before. At the greeting line he shook DH's hand and the first words he said were "Give me call, I can get you six grand for that".
Obnoxious twat.

I utterly despise all the people making comments on social media about the RNLI being traitors and all the so called ‘ patriots’ marching through the street wanting to take our country back, utterly despise every last one of them.

Someone left a a comment telling the RNIB to stop picking up.immigrants....
And they responded with a helpful explanation offering to assist if there were any vision problems..

But yes there's a lot of staggeringly awful - very scripted- stuff around about the RNLI.
