This happened last week and it has been on my mind. I would like some feedback as I'm too embarrassed to discuss it with family and friends.

I was driving to a smallish, local town for some shopping. I wanted to park in a side road that has limited access and I was looking for the way in. I got confused looking for the entry way and ended up committed a traffic offense in which I mounted and crossed the pavement (I could go into more detail on this, but it's a bit complicated to explain the exact layout of the road). I immediately realised my mistake and drove off the other side. No one was involved, no pedestrians, no other cars, but it was a stupid mistake and I felt a bit shaken afterwards.

A couple of minutes later, I was buying a parking ticket at the machine, and I was approached by a random bloke, who asked me, quite forcefully "was that just you, in that blue car, who drove across the pavement?". I was a bit taken aback, but answered honestly - I said, yes it was me, I made a stupid mistake, I was confused by the road layout.

As I walked back to my car, he followed me and continued to go on. He said "that could have been really dangerous", I said yes, sorry, repeated I had made a mistake, and explained again that I had been confused, and that I wasn't from the town and didn't visit often so was unfamiliar with the road layout. He then said "it's lucky no-one was injured", and I said that there was no-one there (I'm starting to get pretty irritated at this point). He then kept saying "I've never seen anything like it, it's the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen in my life". By now I'm really pissed off with him, and suggest that if that's the case maybe he should get a f*ing life (I'm not proud of myself). We then shortly arrived at my car, at which point he said "Well, you should be more careful", and I said as a parting shot (really cross now) "Well you should be more careful or you'll get punched in the face". (Double meaning here - that's how he was making me feel, but also, if he goes around accosting people like this, it's likely to happen in the future). At this point he walked off, possibly smirking.

I should also add that my elderly mum was in the car, waiting for me in the passenger seat and she told me afterwards that he had approached her and demanded if she was driving, before finding me at the parking machine.

Anyway, I drove home home later, pretty upset about the whole thing and fully aware that it wasn't my finest hour. About 2 hours later there's a ring on my doorbell and it's the police. The guy has reported me for threatening him. I think he must have given them the car registration and I got the impression a police car went past my house later and saw my car on the drive!

I was, of course, horrified. I told the police the whole story as above, and they listened, and were actually sympathetic to me (or seemed to be), and told me they would be taking things no further and closing the report down. They even seemed to agree that the guy is, in fact, inviting trouble by approaching people like this. I wonder if he is already known to them for being a constant complainer.

I can't believe it though. I feel now that I was deliberately goaded. I mean, what did he expect by harassing a stranger - if he was that worried about my driving he should have gone straight to the police. What was he hoping to achieve?

I also feel really ashamed of myself for losing my temper and rising to him (I'm actively trying to get less irritated with people in day to day life), and I feel pretty stupid for making the driving mistake in the first place.

I'd just be really interested to hear what people think about this situation. Was I out of order or was he?

Ok you shouldn’t have said that to him, but the guys a busy body who should get a bloody life! Glad it’s gone no further op.

Mooselander · 31/08/2026 13:03

He shouldn’t have harangued you, but you were out of order with your threats.

Medicalgrademusic · 31/08/2026 13:04

I think you were more out of order than him. I don't understand how you can accidentally drive over a pavement. If you can't work out how to get in somewhere because a pavement is in the way you don't just drive over it. What you said was a clear threat too, you basically threatened to punch him in the face.

I think you were lucky the police were sympathetic actually

Mousespoons · 31/08/2026 13:04

People make mistakes, no harm done, you said sorry, he was goading you, the police were sympathetic. I bet he wouldn’t have gone on and on like that at a man. Try not to dwell on it.

Saucery · 31/08/2026 13:06

I think he would have reported you for what he perceived to be dangerous driving anyway. Some people are just like that (usually men). I would have stopped at ‘get a fucking life’ tbh, because you gave him the opportunity to say he’d been threatened 🙄. I’m glad the police didn’t take it any further. Maybe someone will punch him in the face one day, but then again, he no doubt keeps his opinions to himself unless it’s a female he’s intimidating.

Sidge · 31/08/2026 13:07

You were so out of order I can’t believe you’re even questioning yourself.

If you’re so easily confused by a road layout you drive dangerously across a pavement to the point someone feels obliged to seek you out and discuss it you shouldn’t be driving.

If you’re so reactionary you threaten someone who pointed out your dangerous driving that you threaten to thump them you deserve to get a visit from the police.

Maybe use this a learning experience and seek to address your behaviours. It sounds like you’re already aware you are stormy.

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 31/08/2026 13:09

Well he isn't harangueing "people", he's bullying two females - one of whom is elderly.
If you had been a 6 foot bloke built like the proverbial, he would have kept his mouth shut.

Twat.

DebbieSavage · 31/08/2026 13:10

U did nothing wrong hun I would have reported that man for sexual harassment he had no wright following u around like that hope ur OK ❤

WindsorGreatPark · 31/08/2026 13:10

Are you the same poster who had the police turn up because you told a teenage boy to tell his dad he was a cunt after parking badly in a supermarket car park?

Or is this a new MN engagement farming technique with stories about police turning up 2 hours after a minor dispute?

Either way, don't swear at people and threaten them and the police won't turn up on your doorstep.

I agree the solution to getting to where you want to get to is never to drive across the pavement. You were so defensive because you probably realised how dangerous this was. You are lucky there was noone there. I admire this bloke for calling you out, most people would mind their own business. Hopefully this will make you think before doing something stupid in the future.

PurplebudsWhitebuds · 31/08/2026 13:11

I must say he was being a pain in the neck with his persistence. But I think you were totally wrong to talk about physical violence in the way you did. That is a total recipe for escalating things.

Octavia64 · 31/08/2026 13:12

You were out of order.

you made a physical threat.

Well it’s not sexual harassment is it as there was nothing sexual about it. Just because someone is annoying you doesn’t mean you should lie.

RogueFemale · 31/08/2026 13:12

As PPs have said, he wouldn't have dared hassle a man like this.

Marellain · 31/08/2026 13:13

You were so much more out of order than he was… the fact that you don’t know this immediately is truly speaking badly of you as a person.

BitOutOfPractice · 31/08/2026 13:14

I think you were remarkably restrained op. If anyone had approached my elderly mom like that they would’ve got what for from me.

we all know men like that. He’d never have done any of that to a man.

Drop your shoulders, stop beating yourself up and move on.

Hope your mom is ok too.

Have you not read the op and how she’s feeling about it ie mortified, sorry, upset etc. talk about sticking the boot in.

Edited

I am not that person, I haven't read that post.
This really happened. And yes, you are right I shouldn't have sworn at him, it was in the heat of the moment, I was feeling cornered and I just wanted him to go away. I also would never have actually hit him, I was venting my exasperation. But yes, I know this doesn't excuse it.

You were out of order.

you made a physical threat.

A middle aged woman isn't any kind of threat to a man. They were angry words, that's all.

Honestly this

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 31/08/2026 13:16

He shouldn't have done what he did. However, you shouldn't be driving if you drove across a pavement!

I can't work out if this is satire, but I'm assuming not as it doesn't say, " I would of reported..."

Megifer · 31/08/2026 13:18

Chufty badges to the pious posters who have never done anything wrong 🌟 big well done to you all

Witchergeralt · 31/08/2026 13:18

Yes, you made a mistake when driving and quite a biggie tbh, however, if a man approached me like that I would definitely be intimidated and scared. If he carried on haranguing me then I would start getting very worried about where he was going with it and, backed into a corner, I might also come out fighting too.

I think you were wrong but I completely understand and see why the police didn't take it any further. A man haranguing an elderly woman and then a woman on her own is not a good look.

Saucery · 31/08/2026 13:19

@FairyonaFrog he’ll be feeling really peeved that the police NFAed it.
You did an ill advised manoevre while driving, you won’t do that again. Honestly, have a little smirk to yourself about a Billy Big Bollocks not getting the satisfaction of the police doing anything about something he pretended was a threat, then move on.
