To think fat women look better in bikinis than one pieces

Before anyone jumps on me, of course people can wear what they want and feel most comfortable in...

But ive just returned from holiday and I did think whilst lying on the beach and round the pool how much better larger women look in bikini rather than one piece costumes. I think maybe it's just a confidence thing and those who exude confidence rather than self consciousness look better overall.

But regardless of that, I just think visually they actually look better...not that anyone owes attractiveness to others obviously

Who are you to judge (other) women’s bodies?

Good job I'm not then.

Yep, that's me. I went swimming the other day in a one piece costume, slipped coming up the shingle and tore a 4" gash in the skin on my shin. This happens a lot as I have very fragile skin so now I have swim trousers and a rash vest. I do not have a great figure but I also don't need to remove huge chunks of skin. I always wear trousers and long sleeves for protection as well.

Sometimes it's just about continuing to do what you want but sensibly.

To be fair I think most people’s skin would tear if they slipped on shingle, no?

It was the merest touch ... I didn't fall, my shin just brushed the shingle and split open, my husband did the same thing a minute later, not a damn mark!

I think it’s sad women’s bodies are constantly under the microscope, even by fellow women. Fat men just wear swim shorts and nobody notices or cares unless they’re morbidly obese. Lots of older men have big pot bellies and wear shorts presumably without a second thought.

I think people judge fat men just as much as fat women. The difference is that men are far less likely to care. Women generally care more about their appearance, which is why they buy more clothes, makeup, beauty products etc.

However, if I saw a fat man in a pair of speedos then I would definitely think that he’d look better in a pair of long, baggy shorts!

This is an absolutely unhinged response. Did you even read my opening post where I said obviously people can and should wear what they want.

As for other posters saying I'm obsessed with fat women and staring at them...please. unless you walk round with your eyes shut, we look at people all the time. And yes most of us have opinions on things. As someone who has been fat and thin and is interested in style and fashion, I do like looking at what people wear.

I am with you all the way, op. Some of the replies are really nasty.

Look, it's this simple. The op was at the beach, an experience many of us know. She had probably had a swim, played with the kids, sunbathed, read her books and mags, played beach ball whatever, and there she was sitting on the beach. Doing that most interesting of activities, watching people. People-watching. And where better than on a beach? All of humanity is there, the young, the old, the rich, the poor, the slim, the fat, the happy, the unhappy, the straight, the gays, the pregnant, the locals, the tourists, bikins, burkinis, budgie-smugglers, one pieces etc, etc. A parade of humanity in front of her. Up and down the beach, back and forth. Conversations, laughter, arguements she hears snatches of. All with very few clothes on. All these practically naked apes. And she's observing the differences and similarities between us all, and how they clothe themselves. And since she's a woman, and a woman who has been various weights, she's observing how other women clothe themselves. How women clothe themselves is of interest to many women. It's interesting, right? This a women-centred forum, where a whole chapter is devoted to Style and Beauty. And that is all she is doing. She is looking and commenting. We all look at each other (men and women) , have opinions, comment. It's no big deal.

Do you never look at someone's clothing and think I like that or I don't like that, or that looks good, that doesn't?

Of course, everybody does.
But I don't presume a woman is wearing something because she feels self conscious, I would think she is wearing it because she likes it.

Or group everyone together, like all fat women should wear x

fat women, like any other women should wear what they wish. Without fear of judgement.

Laurmolonlabe · 01/09/2026 18:51

personally i don't think there is much in it- if the fat is serious enough to fall into rolls definitely a one piece, rolls of fat are very unattractive no matter how much confidence you have.

Soberinthecity · 01/09/2026 18:56

MajorSamanthaCarter · 31/08/2026 11:53

I'm sure 'fat' women everywhere thank you for your opinion on how they look 🙄

This. What a weird post…as if their opinion on anyone’s body actually matters…

pearlchoker · 01/09/2026 19:24

Woman are so bloody judgemental about other women are they not? Just know this ladies....I don't give a flying fuck what you think about me semi naked. 😂

Zerosleep · 01/09/2026 19:45

Got to be honest, I’m not small by any account but I do like a bikini. Underwired to keep my boobs in place and high waist shorts to pour my stomach into.

Cielovista · 01/09/2026 19:50

I agree with you. British women tend to cover up everything with even young slim women afraid to expose an inch remaining shrouded in mummy Boden one pieces or tankinis. Olive skinned Italian women (fat, thin, young, old or pregnant) wear whatever they like and why not? Beach life is just not part of British culture and we don’t feel comfortable dressing for it.

Mackerelfillets · 01/09/2026 20:02

I know where you're coming from. A bikini top, underwired, from a top brand like bravissimo or panache will look better than one without an underwire, or a suit again without a wire. However, speaking as someone with 36G boobs I look fab in an underwired suit again from a top brand. Its all about the fit!!

Honestly OP I'm amazed that this is what was occupying your mind whilst lying on a beach on holiday! You sound as though you must have been absolutely bored stiff if you couldn't find something more enjoyable to think about.

I often notice what people are wearing! Specially if I were just relaxing on a beach (I don’t do that sort of holiday but if I did I can imagine I would look around me and people watch a bit, surely that isn’t unusual?) Sometimes on the train etc I’ll reflect on trends I see and think things like “gosh, why do so many young men have those weird half-mullets, they would look nicer with different hair etc”. So if the OP is weird for thinking these sorts of things so am I, I guess.
I’m a size 12 with big boobs - a bmi near the top end of healthy so I’m sure many on mumsent would say I’m fat. I think a bikini is kinder to me than a one piece (as well as crucially much easier to get out of under a dry robe!) so reckon you’re probably right OP. My bikini is high waisted though, wouldn’t want anything too skimpy.
