AIBU to be suspicious after finding a sealed card in his luggage?

So... My husband works away a lot. I mean really a lot. No particular reason to distrust him but at the end of the day I'm a realist and think complacency is unwise. Marriage not great but honestly it's probably more me that thinks that...
Anyway. Husband packing to go away. Stuff on bed. I picked up a music magazine that was lying in amongst the stuff and flicked through it. Inside, there was a red sealed greetings card. This has got my spidey sensing tingling because this man doesn't send anyone - other than me - cards EVER. I do all that stuff.
I don't know what to do: ask him about it? But I run the risk of him being defensive and if he really doesn't want me to see the contents of the envelope then I suspect he will accuse me of snooping and I'd have to escalate massively to see the contents. If that happened then yes you could say that would be all I'd need to know but I feel I'd want something concrete to base turning our lives upside down upon.

What I have actually done is remove it to give myself time. I figure if it's current and important he'll worry where it's gone but he'll have to ask ME about it.

I COULD find an envelope same size and colour and open and reseal. Probably don't have time to do that today and he's leaving tomorrow.

I'm mainly a lurker but I've seen other people get good advice on here so... What do we think?
To be clear I am very chill about him being away all the time and never give a second thought to where he is or what he's up to. But this has kind of freaked me out and I have a weird feeling about it.

You're going to feel really silly if it's some charity marketing magazine insert. But the only way to find out is to open it.
Surely if your husband had written and hidden a card, he would also have written a name on the front of the envelope?

Obviously he wouldn't....! He'd do that after leaving. My exh was a serial cheat so trust me I know this is what he'd do..!

The fake posts on here lately are getting too much

I don't ever put names on the envelopes of family cards that aren't being posted... It might even have been sent in with a box of other stuff - and possibly not even this year I really can't remember!

This is the most bizarre part of the whole thread 😳

scalt · 29/08/2026 20:19

This very much comes under heading of “only on Mumsnet”.

And you should be careful opening a red envelope: it might burst into flames and shriek at you, and then you’ll be crying and shaking because the neighbours heard it.

JudithsCheeses · 29/08/2026 20:19

Just open it and find out. If it's innocent then it's simply "whoops, found this on the floor and opened it wothout thinking."

Not like he can prove otherwise.

Timeforachange26 · 29/08/2026 20:19

UniquePinkSwan · 29/08/2026 15:44

I’d ask him what it was. Why wouldn’t you?

Obviously playing sherlock holmes seems to be more the thing with people on here

JudithsCheeses · 29/08/2026 20:20

And if you don't normally put names on cards then there's every chance you wrote it and forgot about it and you're tying yourself in knots over nothing. Or can at least plausibly say that's why you opened it out of curiosity.

Timeforachange26 · 29/08/2026 20:22

greatbigproblem · 29/08/2026 16:28

I opened it!!! Oh my God I feel like such an idiot!!! It was an old valentine's card from me!!!

Hahaha You hadn't obviously written his name on it

He will be defensive and he will lie, they all do, I've been there, please don't let anyone do this to you, they don't stop.

He hasn't done anything except keep a card SHE sent him

CareBearClaire · 29/08/2026 21:51

AppleButterGutter · 29/08/2026 18:35

Or, more likely, it is what OP actually said that it was 2 hours before you posted.

All OP says is that it was a red sealed greetings card. Doesn’t say if there was any text or writing on it. You often get sealed envelopes in magazines and when you open it there is an advertising flyer in it.

RemindMeIn15Minutes · 29/08/2026 22:01

Well, this is the happiest ‘Is he having an affair?’ post I’ve read in a long while (because often he is)!

You must be so relieved! And so am I 😂

greatbigproblem · 29/08/2026 15:53

I wasn't with him in the bedroom when he was packing. He wasn't there when I picked up the magazine. My gut feeling is that I need to see what's in that envelope. I won't be able to just forget about it.

He will leave at some point tomorrow so if I open it tomorrow I've got plenty of time to find an identical red envelope and also plenty of time to get my ducks in a row if need be.

I feel reassured that at least a few of you would want to see what's in there!

Can you not just hide it until after he leaves and deny all knowledge of it if he mentions it - which, if it’s dodgy he’s unlikely to. If he does, then that’s your opportunity to ask who it’s for.

ETA just read your update. So relieved for you.

Sassylovesbooks · 29/08/2026 22:25

I wonder if your husband uses the card as a bookmark?! My husband uses random cards/paper as bookmarks, when he's reading his magazine!

babyproblems · 29/08/2026 23:22

letsgoanonforthis · 29/08/2026 15:38

I'd be taking that sealed red card into the bathroom, locking the door for privacy and then opening said card to see exactly what it is (yes, I know, I'm a wrong 'un)
If it's innocent then I'd deny all knowledge of said card and act like I have no clue.
If it wasn't innocent I'd be initiating 'a conversation'

id also do this

Laura95167 · 29/08/2026 23:46

Id say in front of him, as I dramaticly opened it OMG you got me a card.. in 30 seconds wed both know what he did

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 29/08/2026 23:54

Morals aside - any other red envelope will do, he’s a man he’s not gonna know if it’s crimson or scarlet.

This feels particularly intrusive, especially as you have no reason to distrust him.

I'd raise absolute hell if someone invaded my privacy like this; for no other reason than 'not being complacent and a realist'.

YABU!

"What do we think?"

I think it's all made up. You asked, I answered.

PollyBell · 30/08/2026 02:28

I would put it all back k where I found ot and move on if he is cheating he is cheating that is on him, i am a grown intelligent woman who does not need to act lile a 13 year old

And no i have no need to open it or do any other creative snooping ot is not EastEnders

ErNo20 · 30/08/2026 03:42

I'd have instantly opened it. Would not have felt the tiniest hesitation or any guilt at all.

LBFseBrom · 30/08/2026 05:40

Either open carefully or ask him.

If your husband travels around it's likely to be some cards advertising things in an envelope left at a hotel.that

ErNo20 · 30/08/2026 05:41

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 30/08/2026 00:59

Yep. I felt sad for her when I read this.

It’s the classic Mumsnet double standard. The replies would be very different if he had opened a card that he believed to be suspicious, or evidence of an affair.
