AIBU to be suspicious after finding a sealed card in his luggage?

So... My husband works away a lot. I mean really a lot. No particular reason to distrust him but at the end of the day I'm a realist and think complacency is unwise. Marriage not great but honestly it's probably more me that thinks that...
Anyway. Husband packing to go away. Stuff on bed. I picked up a music magazine that was lying in amongst the stuff and flicked through it. Inside, there was a red sealed greetings card. This has got my spidey sensing tingling because this man doesn't send anyone - other than me - cards EVER. I do all that stuff.
I don't know what to do: ask him about it? But I run the risk of him being defensive and if he really doesn't want me to see the contents of the envelope then I suspect he will accuse me of snooping and I'd have to escalate massively to see the contents. If that happened then yes you could say that would be all I'd need to know but I feel I'd want something concrete to base turning our lives upside down upon.

What I have actually done is remove it to give myself time. I figure if it's current and important he'll worry where it's gone but he'll have to ask ME about it.

I COULD find an envelope same size and colour and open and reseal. Probably don't have time to do that today and he's leaving tomorrow.

I'm mainly a lurker but I've seen other people get good advice on here so... What do we think?
To be clear I am very chill about him being away all the time and never give a second thought to where he is or what he's up to. But this has kind of freaked me out and I have a weird feeling about it.

Personally I'd steam it open then reseal.

Or open it and then say you found it on the floor and you just opened it without thinking.

letsgoanonforthis · 29/08/2026 15:38

I'd be taking that sealed red card into the bathroom, locking the door for privacy and then opening said card to see exactly what it is (yes, I know, I'm a wrong 'un)
If it's innocent then I'd deny all knowledge of said card and act like I have no clue.
If it wasn't innocent I'd be initiating 'a conversation'

This

I would open it then deny all knowledge of it. The card would then be put in the bin if it's innocent or a conversation would be had if it's not. The card would already be open, but I'm hot headed and would've assumed the worst anyway.

You only have this opportunity to know... And it will send you mad if you don't open it.

UniquePinkSwan · 29/08/2026 15:44

I’d ask him what it was. Why wouldn’t you?

Yes I do see that. I think that's a really reasonable response. But IF it turns out that this is evidence of something dodgy then I don't think I want to face it today. I think if he's done something wrong he'd be massively defensive in the first instance. I can't face it.

Surely as you have taken it, you will open it?

chirrupybird · 29/08/2026 15:46

How do you know it was a greetings card it might just be some random thing that came with the magazine, they have all sorts of junk inside. Keep it until he leaves and then open it, if he asks where it is in the meantime just say you picked it up off the floor and put it to one side.

Personally id just open it tbh to put your mind at ease. If it turns out to be nothing id just be honest and say you saw it,panicked a bit and might prompt a conversation on what led you to think there might be something going on and the issues in your marraige.

itsgettingweird · 29/08/2026 15:47

I’d open it.

if it’s for you thank him and leave him wondering how you found it.

If it’s for someone else I’d put it back all opened and so when he’s away and goes to retrieve it he knows you’ve seen it.

Shinyandnew1 · 29/08/2026 15:48

I’d open it. I presume there’s no name on it?

What are you going to do?

ImogenBrocklehurst · 29/08/2026 15:49

If you’re prepared to deal with the consequences then steam it open.

MelonSorbet · 29/08/2026 15:49

You're going to feel really silly if it's some charity marketing magazine insert. But the only way to find out is to open it.
Surely if your husband had written and hidden a card, he would also have written a name on the front of the envelope?

Daftapath · 29/08/2026 15:51

I would keep it hidden and open it. Then deny all knowledge of it. He will just think that it has been lost.

My next move would depend on the contents.

Laiste · 29/08/2026 15:52

Steam it
steam it
steam it

or put it in the freezer that works too doesn't it?

reseal with a bit of glue

now please ! 👍

Laiste · 29/08/2026 15:53

i would not hesitate - if it's all good then you can chill.

somanychristmaslights · 29/08/2026 15:53

If he has done something wrong, surely it’s better to face it now than to wait until he gets back. At least you’ll know and then have space from him whilst he’s away to get your head straight.

greatbigproblem · 29/08/2026 15:53

I wasn't with him in the bedroom when he was packing. He wasn't there when I picked up the magazine. My gut feeling is that I need to see what's in that envelope. I won't be able to just forget about it.

He will leave at some point tomorrow so if I open it tomorrow I've got plenty of time to find an identical red envelope and also plenty of time to get my ducks in a row if need be.

I feel reassured that at least a few of you would want to see what's in there!

LimeFizz · 29/08/2026 15:54

I’d have opened it when I found it

Softcream · 29/08/2026 15:55

I would open it and say nothing. He'll think it's gone missing, or if he thinks you've taken it he won't say anything.
