AIBU to be suspicious after finding a sealed card in his luggage?

So... My husband works away a lot. I mean really a lot. No particular reason to distrust him but at the end of the day I'm a realist and think complacency is unwise. Marriage not great but honestly it's probably more me that thinks that...
Anyway. Husband packing to go away. Stuff on bed. I picked up a music magazine that was lying in amongst the stuff and flicked through it. Inside, there was a red sealed greetings card. This has got my spidey sensing tingling because this man doesn't send anyone - other than me - cards EVER. I do all that stuff.
I don't know what to do: ask him about it? But I run the risk of him being defensive and if he really doesn't want me to see the contents of the envelope then I suspect he will accuse me of snooping and I'd have to escalate massively to see the contents. If that happened then yes you could say that would be all I'd need to know but I feel I'd want something concrete to base turning our lives upside down upon.

What I have actually done is remove it to give myself time. I figure if it's current and important he'll worry where it's gone but he'll have to ask ME about it.

I COULD find an envelope same size and colour and open and reseal. Probably don't have time to do that today and he's leaving tomorrow.

I'm mainly a lurker but I've seen other people get good advice on here so... What do we think?
To be clear I am very chill about him being away all the time and never give a second thought to where he is or what he's up to. But this has kind of freaked me out and I have a weird feeling about it.

I opened it!!! Oh my God I feel like such an idiot!!! It was an old valentine's card from me!!!

Oh how sweet. I love that it’s a happy ending. So many shit men out there. Today your H bucks the trend.

Ashhh56 · 29/08/2026 17:39

Yeah I'd have already opened it 😂🙃

Edited to say, didn't read the update, glad it was a good outcome 😊

grinandslothit · 29/08/2026 17:47

I smiled at the outcome because it's so charming that it turned out to be nothing bad

BySharpPanda · 29/08/2026 17:50

He will be defensive and he will lie, they all do, I've been there, please don't let anyone do this to you, they don't stop.

NCForOneNightOnly · 29/08/2026 17:56

So he’s been having an affair with…..you? 😳🤣

Why would he lie about keeping a Valentine's card from his own wife?

Put yourself out your misery and just open it! If it’s innocent you’ll feel better and if it’s not, least you know!

But its her misery or not...not ours. But I am now very very invested and team open it via steaming and reseal (if required).

SereneGoose · 29/08/2026 18:06

Ahhhha brilliant outcome!

She doesn’t need to tell anyone on here she’s opened it or what it says, I just think torturing yourself over it all night is ridiculous!

Good job she doesn't have to then isn't it?

Yes we do definitely have some stuff to address but it kind of makes me laugh a bit when some people post on threads like this as if the OP is the ONLY person in the entire country who is in a less than perfect marriage! (Not you Skatefordinner).
So many reasons why people have to or choose to stay...
But it definitely makes me happy that today and tomorrow can be peaceful and we get to kick the can of a less than perfect marriage down the road to be looked at another day!!!

I'm glad it turned out to be nothing OP. But this is a profoundly depressing sentence

we get to kick the can of a less than perfect marriage down the road to be looked at another day!!!

It’s probably one of those advertisements if there’s nothing written on the front of the envelope.

I think he'd find it funny to be honest. And secretly be a bit flattered that I cared.

So maybe I will!

show him this thread 🙏

Intrigued, I just did an AI-assisted search, as to whether any current UK music mags have either a freebie/giveaway or a marketing insert in a red envelope.
The answer was 'no' on both counts. Plus various reasons why it wouldn't be either of those two options.
And it referenced this thread!
I really want to know the answer now...

Why would you use AI for that? AI has access to public information online. The design and inclusion of an advert of a specific type within a magazine would only really be stored in the private servers of the advertiser and magazine. Unless someone randomly posted about an advertising envelope in their mag (unlikely as it’s such a boring topic) there would never be anything for AI to find. This is the kind of search that AI ISNT useful for.

Stop wasting water on crap.

Allseeingallknowing · 29/08/2026 18:29

OP why wasn’t his name on the envelope?

Or, more likely, it is what OP actually said that it was 2 hours before you posted.

I don't ever put names on the envelopes of family cards that aren't being posted... It might even have been sent in with a box of other stuff - and possibly not even this year I really can't remember!

I’d ask him what it was. Why wouldn’t you?

Because if he is having an affair he will guilt trip the op saying its something innocent or he might take it and hide it/destroy it.

I don't know if you've ever been in this situation but the last thing a cheating man will do is admit it.

Just a search - my phone defaults to an AI search. I'm aware it has its limitations.

My phone defaults to an AI search. I'm aware it has its limitations, and I'm very aware of the environmental consequences. However, in a moment of sheer indulgence, I allowed myself this one minor indiscretion. 🙏 😀
