AIBU to think the trend for Lingerie lace and silk as outer wear is really odd?
Everywhere I look there’s cheap lace appliquéd onto skirts and t shirts.

Then today I saw bra’s, as t-shirt motif’s.

AIBU to think this trend is awful.

Hideous. It seems some people want to wear the most revealing clothes they can. Was in front of someone with leggings that were so see through they revealed her thong-ewwConfused

You were in front of her? You must have a proper swivelly head to get an eyeful of her underwear!

MaddestGranny · 24/08/2026 18:34

I feel I'm so old, I'm too old to comment.
I was of the mini-mini-skirt generation (I always wore outer-layer knickers to colour-match my outfits).
But I find it gruesome to see (mainly) young women in the street / on the Tube flaunting their availables. I just wish they wouldn't.

Similarly, I cringe away from bare man-flesh on the high street or in the Underground. Ooo, no, please don't.
Save it for the swimming-pool. Please.

I love this and it’s true

Now I’m imagining a world where male celebs on the red carpet have revealing ‘side testicle’ clothing, or ‘opaque sprayed-on fabric’ penis trousers. Low-slung bottoms that show their cracks or the top of their pubes 😂

I wonder if it would be viewed as sexy if it was a celeb instead of a plumber with badly fitting jeans or a skinny teen who wears their jeans around their thighs?!

I’ve seen some penis-hugging trousers on celebs before but that’s about it.

Surgz · 24/08/2026 18:57

Yuk. Totally tacky but i think it was 'edgy' in the 90s. I will admit i do have a knee length silk bias cut cami dress that has a lingerie type lace trim... bloody expensive ..but my partner hates even that 🤣

GarlicAnything · 24/08/2026 19:01

It would certainly be an innovation, @GreensAreGoodForYou 😂 Penises tend to stand up just as unpredictably as nipples, but rather more prominently. Replacing trouser tents with crotch poles would make red carpet events more interesting to watch, but might cause a few problems ...

...Yeah, I think they should go for it!

HollyhocksandPeons · 23/08/2026 16:02

Sorry, I must be showing my age, but this is a very old trend - like really old. 1990s.

80s actually. I remember it the first time round

Holidaymodeon · 24/08/2026 19:14

Mycatisreal · 23/08/2026 15:46

Madonna started all that in 1984

Madonna did NOT start a trend of wearing T-shirts with bras printed on the front.

if she was dead she’d be spinning in her grave at this abominable comment.

Any1ForTennis · 24/08/2026 19:44

Highly fashionable teenage me in 95/96 IIRC wore a super sparkly sequined bra and totally see through sheer blouse over the top. Some girls wore that style to school but that was a tad too far for me. (I also had the matching thong, trust me that didn't end well when the sequins fell off 🙈).

It's just the latest fad and no worse that 100's of its predecessors!

Shedsqueek · 24/08/2026 19:48

It wont last.

Serenstar1 · 24/08/2026 19:55

In the 90's my sister (in her late teens) used to wear a completely see through white lace strappy mini dress with just white knickers and bra underneath. I remember being on holiday and her going out for a meal in it. My Dad refused to walk with her and my Mum called him an old prude. In hindsight my Dad was completely right. I think every generation has its own hideous/ inappropriate fashions.

danglethedingle · 24/08/2026 19:59

I think its hideous as well, but I, and I suspect the OP, are not the target market.

In my distant youth we went out with our home cut and dyed hair stuck up with soft soap, and wearing dresses that looked like bin liners with ripped fishnets and '60s winklepickers we picked up in charity shops. One of my friends used a tin kettle for a handbag.

We thought we were so daring and avant-garde, and looking back, absolutely bloody ridiculous.

Kids are going to do weird shit, all you can do is let them, they will grow out of it.

Rave scene ... you had to be there.

Evening gown, trainers and fake fur coat for me lol

I can recall women wearing marks and Spencer’s long nighties as maxi dresses way back in the very late sixties/very early 70’s.

BlueFahrenheit · 24/08/2026 20:06

I spotted a few teenage girls wearing these in London a few weeks ago.

Awful.

It looks cheap, that's for sure!

Realworld10 · 24/08/2026 20:50

It's so interesting to see fashion doing its circles! I guess there are only ao many combinations so they all come and go.

Thing is, if following fashion, you choose what you like to wear. When the satin nightwear was popular decades ago, I didn't like it so didn't wear it, along with many others who thought it was ick.

See it, dislike it, don't wear it, simples...

I think it would level the playing field too... let US judge THEM on the size of their bits, the colour, shape and so on. We could have entire newspaper columns dedicated to discussing whether So-and-So celeb 'should' be wearing such revealing clothing ("is it really appropriate?") or whether they should cover up 'at their age' (Clooney too old for a crotch pole?) and so on. I can actually picture this happening, along with 'penis make-up' becoming a thing, too.

When it happens, I am coming back here to say, "Told you so!"😂

👍🏼

Don't forget John Major?
It was alleged he wore his undies over his trousers. Re Spitting Image Puppet.

NewGoldFox · 24/08/2026 21:32

I used to wear a la senza body as a top in the 2000’s. Wish I still had the body to pull it off now!

nomoremsniceperson · 24/08/2026 22:18

YANBU op, It looks bloody awful.

I also can't stand the pulled-up sports socks worn with trainers/sliders or those weird loincloth bikinis that look like a nappy and are flattering on precisely no-one, not even the models advertising them. There's a lot that baffles me about modern fashion

GarlicAnything · 24/08/2026 22:30

Speaking of loincloth bikinis and side testicles ...

It was a lousy film, but so good looking!

WTF is this new trend
SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 24/08/2026 23:28

Looks really naff and cheesy.
Probably the latest wunderkind creation from a young stylist. You the type who studied Art and Fashion at the RCA and Central St Martins.

And think they are original by making a name for themselves.

Vivien Westwood devotee.

Forget it.

Tacky. Too much fake tan. The New Orange Tribe? As for the Male model genital covering. It's so tight, looks as though he could be castrated at any second.

ChelseaBagger · 23/08/2026 16:23

In the late 90s/early 00s i remember wearing light coloured vest tops with bright coloured bras underneath so that they showed through. And the ultra-low hipster jeans with a thong deliberately sticking out the back. And we were obsessed with lacey camisoles, which are essentially just lingerie. Plus ca change.

Oh, and half the skimpy spaghetti strap vest tops also had a massive cut out in the front, and I was never quite sure whether the hole was supposed to rest above your boobs, or whether you were supposed to pull it down so the neckline rested just above above your boobs (kind of normal) and the hole was then over your cleavage....🤷‍♀️

Think they were called keyhole tops. Meant to rest on your breast so cleavage showed through. They first came out in the 70s.

nomoremsniceperson · 25/08/2026 05:40

I also don't get the argument that making fun of stupid and ugly fashions is making fun of women. Men wear stupid ugly fashions too. Living in a city full of hipster kids, I see a ton of men wearing the most ridiculous shit you could imagine, with the most awful hairstyles that look very expensive to maintain. It's just that mens' stuff doesn't tend to be hypersexualised and porn-inspired than awful women's fashion.

Morepositivemum · 25/08/2026 15:56

I thought you meant the nightie slip type dresses with lace- they’re all in stunning colours so I get steered over to them but it would be the world’s greatest fashion-astrophy if I tried them on (wide shoulders, big tummy and hips, teeny boobs!!)
