AIBU to think the trend for Lingerie lace and silk as outer wear is really odd?
Everywhere I look there’s cheap lace appliquéd onto skirts and t shirts.

Then today I saw bra’s, as t-shirt motif’s.

AIBU to think this trend is awful.

I haven't seen anything like this, would just assume it was a feminist statement of some kind if I saw someone wearing it.

Reminds me of those novelty aprons you see in cheap souvenir shops.

Maybe we should all wear these in protest & start our own trend. 😂

I used to wear M&S silk and lace camisoles as a top in the early 90’s, to go out clubbing, but my boobs were where they were meant to be then!

What do you all wear then jeans and fleeces? A nice blouse and pencil skirt. A lot of you sound like the kind of dullards I’d give a massive swerve to. I quite like the contrast of lingerie with streetwear but I don’t especially like some shitty fast fashion manufacturer throwing together a version which is stitched together. You don’t need to buy that look because the idea is you play around in your wardrobe and create these looks with what you have. Anything fake is a bit sad… those jumpers manufactured to look like you were wearing a shirt underneath for example.

Growing up I wore lots of “ out there “ clothes which is exactly what teenagers should be doing. Better that than living in sweatshirts / joggers as far as I’m concerned.

There's also a trend for full arse cheeks on show below very short skirts. Saw this 6 times in central London yesterday. It must be an extension of the back thong swimsuit come back. Fashion!

I've seen this a number of times over the last year and I'm up north. It's as if they've bought a mini skirt about three sizes too small that should sit on the hips and it's round the waist instead. It looks bloody awful in my opinion, but I'm middle-aged, what do I know?😆

I wouldn’t wear it but it’s definitely not something new. I remember things like this when was a teenager. (I’m 40)
I also had a body suit that looked a lot like lingerie, but it wasn’t and I wore it a blazer, that was just a few years ago.

Fashion is odd. No one will like all of it all of the time.

I with you if you mean Farah Fawcett 1970's hair? Years ago I asked for a Farah Fawcett-inspired cut. Loved. It. I tend to get really '70's inspired: blue suede trench in my wardrobe and I always go for over-sized sunglasses.

Yeah we did it in the 80s and again in the 2000s, it’s nothing new.

yes, I had so many mesh tops in the 90s so you could see a spangly bra underneath.

I quite like a non-lacy silk cami worn as a top under a jacket myself.

experimenting with fashion is not the same as following a trend, often stemming from porn.

An example is those denim shorts which are worn with the button open and zip down and the opening flapped apart to show everything below the waist and bum cheeks out at the back teamed with a bra top.

its not pushing any fashion boundaries it’s just porn inspired and does nothing to help men’s perspective of young women.

Exactly what I was thinking of. It's not really a new thing. Just a desperate reinventing of a rubbish idea.

This look co-incided with female singers complaining bitterly about needed to gyrate and dance naked to get a record deal.

I think this T-shirt from the US "cult" brand Vaquera, popularised by Charli XCX among others, might be a contemporary example that's probably been copied at lower price points ($245 US is about £180). There's a fine line between being transgressive (transcending the old "rules" about underwear showing, exposing and making a mockery of the fetishisation of "sexy" women's underwear, or even a Riot Grrrl or Rose McGowan type protest - "you want it so badly, here it is, arseholes! - but on my terms, not yours") and being exploited and commodified or at least promoting something harmful to women as a group. That line may not be in the exact same place for everyone. But somehow, a menswear equivalent like an oversized T silkscreened with a singlet and boxers - or even with a Speedo, bow tie, and chest hair - doesn't ever quite "hit the same".

Marianne Faithfull wore her nightie to go to Covent Garden some time in the early seventies. It was fairly sober and not obviously nightwear, but she boasted about it to make sure people would know. In central and eastern European cities that were occupied by the USSR during the Second World War, the occupying army basically took what they wanted from the local population. Local women who were still financially well-off enough to afford it would go to the theatre or opera and see the Soviet officers' wives and daughters proudly decked out in their own confiscated slips and nightdresses. The "joke" was that they had never seen silk clothing before and thought these were elegant evening wear. Who knew they were just ahead of their time? 😏

These main stream fashions affect all young people.

Young girls are not choosing this fashion out of their own creativity they are being sold the expected image.

More like this! Sold as nighties or petticoats, worn as club dresses. Mine was a kind of oyster white colour. I tried to find a pic of people wearing the actual M and S slips in the 90s because everyone was wearing them but can't find anything.

The dresses and tops looking like petticoats/slips were fashionable in the early 2000s. I bought a nice camisole top one. Victoria Beckham is still wearing them but they seem quite dated to me now.
