to think that actually, no "everyone" does NOT unpack on holiday!

My sister and I have very different views on this!

She and I have gone away many times, always for a week.

She always spends a good hour or so unpacking, setting stuff out etc on arrival and then a couple of hours repacking before we leave. I just live out of my bag/case and dirty clothes folded into a plastic bag when I take them off to chuck back in the case at the end of the week. Repacking takes less than half an hour. The only item I unpack is my "going out" dress, of which I only take one.

She thinks I am abnormal as "everyone unpacks!" I think its probably more like a 50/50 split and when you only have a week, time is of the essence so I prefer to use the time to holiday (made up verb of the week) than fanny about putting my knickers and socks in a drawer!

I live out of my suitcase. I was on holiday for nearly 4 weeks this summer, still didn't 'unpack'. But tbf there was nowhere to put clothes if I did anyway, as I was staying in my parents spare room and the wardrobe was entirely filled with my dad's jackets (as are several other wardrobes. He has a problem...). I feel like if I unpack I'm more likely to forget something when going home.

It really depends on many factors and I do both. Sometimes unpack, sometimes cba. Might depend on length of stay, storage in accommodation, weather in destination/clothes needed

I'm tidy and organised but I rarely stay in a place where I feel comfortable putting my belongings in the drawers and cupboards. My luggage is in packing cubes, what makes it very easy to live out of my suitcase. I do unpack my toiletries and my "going-out-dress".

How on earth does it take your sister an hour to unpack for a week's holiday?! 😂 how much stuff is she taking ?? I hate leaving it all in the case it's horrible so I am definitely Team unpack. Or you could choose the other option my daughter has settled for, where she opens her case and throws everything all over the hotel room floor 😒

Dragging it out from where ? Depending on the room it is either on the floor or one one of those stand things for putting your suitcase on.

Everything would have a musty smell too.

Eh ? Never in my life has anything gone 'musty' in a suitcase.

Especially as cases can get damp in the plane hold

I've been on a lot of planes in my life - long haul as well as short haul, scheduled flights as well as package holidays - and this is not a phenomenon I have ever come across. Which company are you flying with ?

When you have three large suitcases they can’t just be left out, we’d all be tripping over and the kids would be dragging each other round in them. We stay in studio hotel rooms not villas or apartments, there’s no room for several cases. We put them in the wardrobe and under the beds.

In relation to the musty smell, one of our material cases has several times been sat waiting to go into the hold and it’s chucking it down and they don’t cover the cases so the ones on top get wet. They were still damp on arrival. Ours are stored in a loft at home too so the less time our clothes are in there the better for me, if I’ve stood and ironed for several hours before we left I’m getting it all hung up asap!

I like to unpack and make a hotel feel more homely. And all my toiletries around the sink etc. I hang all the clothes up, and dirty clothes go straight into the suitcase so I know which is which.

I stayed in one hotel where there were no shelves or drawers. Things like my medication and undies, it’s best to put them on one of these. There was one ‘shelf’ the top of the in room safe

I hang whatever needs to hang. But I don't put things in drawers etc as I'm paranoid about bugs infiltrating my things. I'm very careful where I put my clothes and suitcase.

I didn’t say it was. I just don’t own any packing cubes.

Solidarity! Even after our bed bug (suspected from hotel) issue my DH still puts his bag on beds and laughs at me thinking I’m being OTT to care.

She’s very fucking rude and narrow minded to tell you you’re abnormal just because her way of doing something is different to yours.

I can’t stand people who do this.

I unpack , but it only takes a short time , not an hour 😂
And that includes unpacking kitchen items we brought along and the dogs bed / bowls / food / toys etc
My youngest lives out of their suitcase so the room ends up a mess by the end of the holiday.

She is not rude at all, like i say it is a good natured disagreement between us!

I unpack a few things, but mostly just take out stuff when I need it.

Oh gosh reading the bedbug horror stories I’m rethinking unpacking on my next trip!

It’s fascinating that so many people don’t unpack!!

I unpack everything, even if it’s just one night. I like being organised and feeling a sense of belonging in the room 😂

It sounds chaotic scrabbling around to find things in a packed bag.

We just had connecting rooms with our friends (another family) on holiday. Their room was really untidy!! I like everything in its place and their room would have annoyed me if I’d slept in it.

P.s. I’m off to research how to check for bedbugs before unpacking!! That would be worse than a messy suitcase.

I travel a lot for work. I unpack. Everything has its place and it’s easier and quicker to find things. I hate rummaging through a bag to find what l want to wear, search for particular makeup items, the right bra for the right top etc.

A little aside, when you get to your accommodation, turn the lights on! I once came back to my hotel at around 11:00pm to discover the room had no power. I had to go to reception and get moved to another floor.

I had the same conversation with my mum, she couldn't believe we don't unpack. If I unpacked I'd end up leaving stuff behind.

To be fair we rarely stay in one place for the entire holiday so there's no point unpacking and repacking every few days.

I often move around too. In which case l unpack the number of things l think l need. I like to be able to open a drawer or a wardrobe and choose from what is there. And in the case of dresses, with minimum creases.

When packing to leave a hotel to go to another hotel early evening. I pack stuff in my hand luggage bag, the last minute stuff - toothpaste and brush, sun cream. As sometimes our cases are taken to load onto the coach 30-45 minutes earlier.

Obviously don’t do this on the day we fly home. As not all airports have those scanners that can handle larger containers of liquids
