to think that actually, no "everyone" does NOT unpack on holiday!

My sister and I have very different views on this!

She and I have gone away many times, always for a week.

She always spends a good hour or so unpacking, setting stuff out etc on arrival and then a couple of hours repacking before we leave. I just live out of my bag/case and dirty clothes folded into a plastic bag when I take them off to chuck back in the case at the end of the week. Repacking takes less than half an hour. The only item I unpack is my "going out" dress, of which I only take one.

She thinks I am abnormal as "everyone unpacks!" I think its probably more like a 50/50 split and when you only have a week, time is of the essence so I prefer to use the time to holiday (made up verb of the week) than fanny about putting my knickers and socks in a drawer!

YABU - I unpack!
YANBU - I live out of my case!

When packing I organise into labelled packing cubes, and lift out what I need as I go.
I hang up any dresses etc, but otherwise I just put the packing cubes, as is, into drawers.
I put laundry into a plastic bag while away, then put that into my case, with any unused clothes still in their cubes, when I’m coming home.
Unpacking takes 3 minutes, repacking 3 minutes.

Agree with this. Also if I had to ruffle through a suitcase to find something I’d end up creasing everything.

I unpack all my smellies into the bathroom and my shoes HAVE to come out anyway so a few clothes isnt much more.

Why are you mocking someone who for whatever reason doesn't like clean clothes touching dirty clothes? It may be a phobia / OCD / ND. Stop it.

She hasn't said it's a phobia, so I'm assuming it's one of those things I only ever see on MN where people are just over the top about 'hygiene'.

Do you need to have a full medical history of someone before deciding if their actions deserve to be ridiculed? When someone is being unkind to someone else in such a public way, then they should be told to stop it. Don’t you agree?

Unpack things that need to drop creases, and shoes everything else stays in the suitcase as I have packing cubes which is far more organised.
I don’t do it as soon as i get there for a start.
Holiday hotels tend to have about 3 hangers anyway and if there are drawers then 9times out of 19 they smell bad (don’t know what it is about hotel drawers)

Often on here if someone is talking about something they do that could be seen as obsessive/unusual/OTT they will say when it's because of ND or a phobia or whatever. In the absence of that in this instance, I'm assuming none of these are the case.
Do you go all over MN telling people to 'stop it'?

It depends how long I’m away for. Two weeks - unpacking. Two nights - living out a suitcase. I want to feel settled for weeks and therefore wouldn’t like living out a suitcase.

Packing cubes are a thing?!

I've been meaning to get some packing cubes for ages, and this thread has reminded me.

I do packing cubes now so unpacking takes a few minutes. I unpack just for a weekend though maybe not for one night.
I wonder whether the unpackers in general are the same ones who have packing lists and check luggage.
Whereas the non-unpackers are hand luggage only and washing out pants every night?

We have taken my adult DC with us on holiday a few times. They shared a room. I couldn't bare to go in their room as they both just lived out of cases / the floor for a full week.

Just zip up bags in different sizes. I have two colours one for me and one for DH.
Underwear and socks in one, tops, shorts, swimwear in another, just lift out of case and put in a drawer.

I'm the same. I wouldn't put my clothes in hotel drawers. You don't know what's been in them. I might hang a coat or something that creases in the wardrobe. That's how I was brought up. We always lived out of the suitcases on holiday as a child.

I unpack it find it easier than rummaging around a case because even though I pack outfits together they always up seperate somehow .

Many holidays I have been on, I stay at 2-4 hotels as part of the tour.

I organise my suitcase on these holidays so take out the number of days I’m staying, out. Things like undies and socks are packed in bags so take the whole lot out. Plus unpack toiletries and other non clothes stuff

When an item of clothing has beyond wearing again, it goes into the suitcase. Only use a laundry bag for undies and socks.

Also on multi hotel holidays, I don’t use the in room safe. Put my valuables in my locked suitcase.

As that means less time packing and unpacking at each hotel. As takes time to unload coach with suitcases, check in, check out and loading up the coach with suitcases

When on holiday in a single hotel holidays, I unpack everything. Then clothes beyond wearing get put to one side of wardrobe or drawer.

Im like you, except all things that might crease eg dresses, go on a hanger. I put dirty items in an old pillowcase, its much easier too when clearing up the room to go home

Now I’m into my 40s, I definitely unpack. I actually did some washing on my last holiday!! The laundry room was right next to the pool so I just shoved it in, had a lovely hour in the pool, before moving it to the drier. It was a revelation actually to come home to clean clothes.

I'm definitely an unpacker. In a way I like doing it - unpacking all my things and putting them away marks the start of a holiday.

And it saves time for me overall. Spending 20 mins unpacking on the first day means it's really easy for me to find everything quickly from then on, and I'm not spending ages during the holiday rummaging in my suitcase.

Never unpack. Like stuffing mushrooms....life's too short.

I always unpack and I do my husband stuff too, otherwise he will live out of a suitcase. However he’ll then just leave everything he takes off over a chair. Drives me nuts but I’m not putting it away again.

I don't operate on the floor so a packed suitcase I have nowhere to put other than the floor is a problem. If I'm somewhere with enough desk top / dressing table space for the suitcase to sit open I'll work from that unpacking what I need. Otherwise I'll unpack.

One thing - do not leave your washing in a bag on show. Ie not inside wardrobe or suitcase.

My friend left her clothes she traveled in a white bag - similar to the hotel’s laundry bag. The maids took this bag thinking it was needed to go to the laundry.
