to think that actually, no "everyone" does NOT unpack on holiday!

My sister and I have very different views on this!

She and I have gone away many times, always for a week.

She always spends a good hour or so unpacking, setting stuff out etc on arrival and then a couple of hours repacking before we leave. I just live out of my bag/case and dirty clothes folded into a plastic bag when I take them off to chuck back in the case at the end of the week. Repacking takes less than half an hour. The only item I unpack is my "going out" dress, of which I only take one.

She thinks I am abnormal as "everyone unpacks!" I think its probably more like a 50/50 split and when you only have a week, time is of the essence so I prefer to use the time to holiday (made up verb of the week) than fanny about putting my knickers and socks in a drawer!

3 nights plus I unpack, but like pps I can’t understand how it takes as long as an hour.

Same, I usually have more stuff to hang up too. But I like to put the bags away out of sight.

If they fit in the wardrobe then I do sometimes leave underwear etc in the bags. And a plastic bag for dirty stuff

I hate living out of a suitcase but I pack it so I can unpack in about 10 minutes flat then get on with the holiday. The repacking takes about 20 minutes (as I need to fold enough to fit everything back in…but it’s the dirty laundry pile all stuffed in together).

I’m really type b so surprised that I’m on the
“tidier” side here. I enjoy getting my things out (nice to settle in!) and then not having to scrabble in a suitcase. Repacking takes no time at all - obviously dirty things are already in a bag and it is quick to empty the closet and drawers of anything clean

HOWEVER I wouldn’t judge someone for choosing to live out of their suitcase

You and me both, I'm the soul of the party on holiday... tell anyone off who leaves anything on the beds, suitcases go in bathroom only, nothing gets unpacked and i quarantine things when I come back. We usually stay in airbnbs and all the crockery gets put in the dishwasher when we arrive. I also take own towels as feel so icky using the ones provided.

We go away next week, husband and kids are so excited, my anxiety has just been gradually ramping up. It sucks.

this is what i do - i think this is semi unpacked so it's fine, i don't see the point of taking clothes out of suitcase as the suitcase acts as a mini cupboard

I am a VERY tidy and organised person but I live out my suitcase on holiday. Things that are nice/more dressy/easily crushed I will hang up, otherwise everything stays (neatly!) in my case.

I mainly live out of the case. Take underwear & bikinis out and put in a draw so easy to find. All toiletries and make up unpacked. Hang up dresses and nice tops for the night, I take a different outfit for each night. but the unimportant stuff like day wear and beach towels stays in the case on 1 side, a recycling bag on the other side ready to put in clothes that are dirty. Although this does take some time as I mix the suitcases going out so if 1 is lost, each person would still have a few days to keep going, but when I get there the clothes are separated to a case per person

I don't unpack when on holiday. No point. Much bigger risk of then leaving something behind.

Depends on who I'm sharing a room with. My late wife was an unpacker, so I unpacked. Now I'm mostly away on my own or with mates and suitcases it is.

I am so glad you said that! My case will be there for at least another week after DD and I got back today!

I unpack for myself and DC. DP does not unpack and lives out of his suitcase. You are right, it’s 50/50 in our family and it doesn’t matter either way. We both manage ourselves on holiday in the way that we prefer, neither of us could care less what the other does regarding suitcases!

Oh yes. I hang up my clothes. Unpack my stuff and then put the suittsomewhere out of the way

I’m really surprised how many don’t unpack! I’d absolutely hate dragging a suitcase out every day. I have joint issues though so it’s more hassle for me and could leave me in pain. I couldn’t leave the suitcase in the way either as it will remind me of heading home. Everything would have a musty smell too. Especially as cases can get damp in the plane hold. Urgh no. Unpack immediately. I even unpack in a Premier Inn for the night!

You’re assuming people who don’t unpack then put the suitcase away? That’s quite a reach! The suitcase stays out and doesn’t move, definitely never had a musty smell either.

Not a chance I’m navigating that all week. We take three large suitcases for a family of four so they have to be stored out the way. Plus the kids would be constantly in and out of them all week

Everyone who doesn't unpack for fear of forgetting things, are you staying in the presidential suite? No hotel I've ever stayed in has more than a wardrobe and a chest of drawers or an open style wardrobe/shelf unit? How does your stuff go missing?

I lived down south during the week for a few months while I did my post doc and I never once unpacked my clothes.

I don’t unpack, never have. I wouldn’t think to put the suitcase out of the way either. I live out of the case. I don’t like the idea of putting my stuff in drawers etc. I would possibly hang up a couple of things to see if the creases drop out.

Stuff can’t really “go missing” but I try to minimise the number of places that I need to check for stuff before leaving. On my last two week holiday I stayed in six different hotels, it would be so easy to just forget something if I’d unpacked everything fully. I also want to spend as little time as possible packing/unpacking.

I try to keep my stuff in as few places as possible to make the sweep of the room before leaving as simple as possible. I don’t always keep everything in my case, but my clothes stay in their packing cubes, my toiletries stay in their hanging bag in the bathroom and I have a little pop up tray that any little bits and pieces get put in so that I know where everything is when it’s time to leave.

If I am staying in multiple places, I will organise my things when I first pack before departure - and then only take out what’s needed in each place. So I will already have outfits planned for each stop.

I unpack and make myself at home, takes ten mins max and the same again to pack.

I mainly use the drawers… swimming costumes in one, underwear in another, pjs in another etc etc
