Letter from HA about loud music?

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 19:37

So basically I received a letter from my HA about loud music causing a disturbance to other residents here.

I am the only one who received it.

I suspect my NDN reported me as I don't think who else it could be?

Surely they could have just left a polite note or approached me?

I assume this will be on my file now?

On my HA file if I ever require a landlord reference from them?

I do play music in the garden at times but surely if it was a nuisance they could have asked me via the neighbours hood WhatsApp group/ Facebook group?

Don’t do it. Use earphones.

So having to listen to kids playing is acceptable, laughing, shouting, shrieking etc, listening to dogs is acceptable but having the radio or whatever on in your kitchen and the door open is not? So we are supposed to sit in silence?

Explicit lyrics is def not ok, neither is full blast or playing early morning and late at night.

Only on MN is it ASBO behaviour to play music. Have just informed the kids, silent discos only when we move and I am cutting out theirs and the dogs tongues in case we offend anyone 😆. Not that my dog barks, only to alert and chasing crows....but still.

Hopefully my neighbours are a bit more normal and accept daily normal noise.

Dobeebeedah · Yesterday 12:06

Loud music is not everyday noise. Neither is dog continually barking. Shouting outside is not normal either.

97% of people on here disagree with you.

MySnappySloth · Yesterday 12:11

No-one wants to listen to your music.

It is antisocial to choose to do something that adversely effects others.

This should be easy to understand.

you're being unreasonable. kids can play quietly without shrieking or screaming.

We can all enjoy music at low volume or on headphones.

Dogs can be trained so they do not bark at every person up the street or leaf that blows. (i hope my neighbours are reading).

There’s no excuse for rowdy behaviour.

No it's not, kids shrieking at the tops of their voices isn't acceptable.

Nobody has suggested that you must sit in silence, so there’s no need for the exaggerated comments about cutting out tongues or holding silent discos. Children playing, a dog occasionally barking and music with a kitchen door open can all be ordinary household noise. The issue is the volume, frequency, duration and effect on other people, particularly the repetitive bass from music, which can travel through walls and make it impossible for neighbours to escape in their own homes.

You acknowledge that music shouldn’t be played at full blast or early in the morning and late at night, so you clearly accept that personal enjoyment has limits when it affects other people. Where exactly do you think that limit should be during the day? If your neighbours could clearly hear your music and told you it was disturbing them, would you turn it down or close the door? Would their discomfort matter to you, even if you personally considered the volume reasonable?

Those are genuine questions. I’m interested in whether you consider the effect of your choices on other people, or whether you believe neighbours should simply tolerate whatever noise you decide is “normal.” Empathy means recognising that something harmless or enjoyable to you can still cause genuine distress to somebody else.

They can. But that would take some effort from the owner.

well, the housing association will have a copy of the letter on your account, yes. That doesn’t mean anything though.

it would’ve been better if they’d spoken to you but loads and loads of people don’t have the confidence to do that and would rather waste a companies time instead 🙄
why don’t you pop round say sorry and keep it down? That’s the mature thing to do

Definitely.

Or you could have had a degree of self awareness and worn headphones instead of subjecting neighbours to your music taste

You know why you weren't approached? Because people who are antisocial enough to play loud music with offensive lyrics in a terraced garden generally don't take well to a conversation, and if anything, escalate their behaviour.

Which is exactly what happened with your boyfriend's actions - he obviously reflects on you.

@FaceIt asked upthread were you not taught to consider other people - I'm genuinely interested in your response here.

And @LilyBunch25 said the problem was with the offensiveness of the lyrics. It's not - it's being forced to listen to someone else's choice of music in your own garden, so you basically can't use it unless you accept that they control your garden. The offensive lyrics are just the icing on the cake.

MMAS · Yesterday 18:34

Nope given your last comment. It is highly unlikely it was your NDN, more likely coming from within the block itself and came from numerous residents. It sounds very much like you are the neighbour from hell.

God I hate people who play music in the garden, why would you assume that everyone else will be ok with having your choice of music forced on them?

I also hate having other peoples thumping music blaring from their open car windows. Just because you like R&B or rap at volume doesn’t mean I do 😒

Itsalittlebitwarm · Yesterday 19:05

At this moment someone is playing loud music in their garden and it's bloody awful! Very selfish and unfair to make neighbours miserable 😑 when we just want to sit out and have aome peace after a long hard week.

You don't know what they're like to approach, could retaliate, so safest option is reporting. Seriously thinking about it but would try with a letter first.

Namechangingregularly · Yesterday 19:16

Don't play music in the garden, or if you do, wear earphones. Other people have different tastes in music and you are inflicting yours in everybody rlse. Music outside means that nobody else is able to enjoy some peace and quiet outdoors.

I had this for one day recently. About 12 hours of loud music in the garden next door during the heatwave. It was awful. But a one off thank goodness. I’d never do it to anyone else and I love music. I have headphones. Everyone is entitled to enjoy their own homes and fresh air and peace.

Turn the music down?

This! Did you really need to be told? YABU

BurtsBeefCrisps · Yesterday 20:03

I have just left the beach (have hired a very expensive beach hut to help with my arthritis rather than lugging stuff around like I normally do), because of a d@clhead family playing shitty music. I have also emailed the council (who organise the beach huts), I don’t mind confrontation but theres loads of them and I know they won’t take kindly to being asked to turn it off. I wanted the sound of the sea, not shitty techno. God I hate people sometimes, its definitely a generational thing, I would never dream of imposing music on everyone around me. YABU!!!

If you had more self awareness, they wouldn’t need to ask you.

TheTruthWillSetYouFreeMaybe · Yesterday 20:34

i have NDNs ( we are semi detached). I love my music, but they play theirs very loud - any day of the week or weekend and often late. Indoors and outdoors. In this heat we have to close the windows but even then it booms thru the house. I am scared to say anything . We only moved in 5 months ago and it’s already getting me down. Just because one house likes loud music, doesn’t mean everyone else wants to hear it.

LakieLady · Yesterday 21:03

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 20:34

I asked my other neighbour and mentioned it on the WhatsApp chat and only I received it.

It was an advisory letter about keeping it down and that the lyrics were found to be offensive due to young children in the area.

Loud and offensive? I'm not surprised someone complained.

The letter and a note of the complaint will be on your file now, and could be used as evidence of noise nuisance/ASB if there are repeated complaints. (Used to work for an HA.)

Oh behave, so we are only allowed in our gardens in silence. Id much rather listen to radio or music than a relentless barking dog.

Both of those things are annoying and inconsiderate. One being less-bad than the other doesn’t make it ok.

Lovely13 · Yesterday 21:16

Keep your music to yourself! No one else wants to hear it, not on public transport, gardens.

Tryagain26 · Yesterday 22:33

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 23:09

Yes the music has been kept low now.

When my boyfriend came over the other day he tried to put it up and I turned it back down immediately.

I honestly didn't mean to annoy anyone.

Did it not occur to you that loud music in the garden when you have close neighbours especially music with offensive language wouldn't offend people ?
When you say you have turned it down now, can it still be heard by your neighbours? If so it is still too loud.

Excactly. We have a neighbour who seems to think her choice of abba and 80s music is what we all like to listen to. I want peace in my garden and wear headphones when listening to my dodgy taste.
