Letter from HA about loud music?

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 19:37

So basically I received a letter from my HA about loud music causing a disturbance to other residents here.

I am the only one who received it.

I suspect my NDN reported me as I don't think who else it could be?

Surely they could have just left a polite note or approached me?

I assume this will be on my file now?

This. ^ It's extremely arrogant to assume that everyone wants to hear YOUR music.

It's much worse than that, because people who play loud music just don't care whether anyone else wants to hear their music or not. They think only their own wants matter, no one else's. It's sociopathic, not just inconsiderate.

On my HA file if I ever require a landlord reference from them?

I do play music in the garden at times but surely if it was a nuisance they could have asked me via the neighbours hood WhatsApp group/ Facebook group?

You don't play music outdoors where other people haven't consented to it. The onus is on you asking permission, not on them telling you it's a nuisance. It's a nuisance by default.

Hope that helps.

NewGoldFox · 24/07/2026 21:34

I suppose if you aren’t considerate/bright enough to consider using headphones they thought best not to engage.

LastOnePlease · 24/07/2026 21:37

OP please take this on board. We have a neighbour who does this, luckily it is not as loud as the previous set but there is nothing we can do as she owns her house. It's not just the music that makes it unpleasant, it's feeling on edge not knowing when it will start. Recently, the neighbours the other side of her got fed up and turned their music up but she just turned hers up louder. Often it's opera or something else with a loud beat that's actually really hard to block out. I wear headphones in the garden when I want to play music and now they are essential because of her. Everyone else here is so respectful. When she is out, all you can hear are the birds or people chatting and having a glass of wine. It's lovely and then she comes back and everyone else has to go inside. She also laughs about it and talks to people on the phone about what she is doing. It genuinely is awful to live next to. Quite often she will put the radio on at maximum volume outsider her patio doors and then go to the end of her garden and read a book. So we all get the noise blasting at us while she enjoys it from a distance...

Well we need the honesty about the music. Do you have a surround sound speaker/alexa full blast or is it low level background music.

For those saying dont play music, behave!!! Everyone is allowed to enjoy their own garden. Being a nuisance is loud music from morning til night. Normal is a kitchen (assuming its on the rear of the property) speaker louder than you would inside.

Wear headphones???? Seriously.....

Did you mean to say louder than you would inside? Surely you mean quieter otherwise it's still very selfish.

I play music in my garden. Not an issue. But I do not disturb my neighbours with it. When I put it on, I make a point of walking to their fence and making sure it isn't audible from there. Just try to be a bit more considerate.

That's really considerate. However if you are in a terraced property, it will always be audible...

LastOnePlease · 24/07/2026 21:42

CombatBarbie · 24/07/2026 20:14

So then move somewhere rural. Ffs the same people who whinge about kids playing in the street, people having bbqs (with no music) but hearing conversation and laughter.

This line is always trotted out as if everyone has the money to buy somewhere in the countryside...

LondonLass2026 · 24/07/2026 21:42

My neighbour plays music extremely loudly. I only haven't reported her because we want to sell soon. The council told me that a letter comes first, then a visit if the letter is ignored, and then a "black mark against the property", but not sure what that means.

Any number of people could report her. Our friends way down the road say they can hear her music, and they're the equivalent of 4 or 5 houses away. She also sits in the car, inexplicably blasting music without going anywhere.

My partner has politely asked her many times to turn it down, he even says we don't mind if it were the odd party but it isn't - she drinks alone every night and turns the music up louder and louder - and every time he texts, she replies "oh fuck off!" then apologises when she's sober, rinse and repeat.

If she had a knock from the council, it'd be the least she deserves.

PoliteSquid · 24/07/2026 21:46

Playing music outside is ALWAYS a nuisance. For that alone YABU.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 24/07/2026 21:51

OriginalSkang · 24/07/2026 19:47

Why on earth would you think playing music in your garden wouldn't be a nuisance?!

This....

Anyone playing music in their garden that's loud enough for surrounding neighbours to hear are also showing that they're pretty inconsiderate, so maybe they didn't want to approach you.

Nofeckingway · 24/07/2026 21:58

Just because nobody approached does not mean they don't have a problem. Why do you assume that people wouldn't mind having to listen to your choice of music at all times . How selfish and inconsiderate of you . Even if it was just low it would be irritating but not anything to complain about . The fact that someone felt strongly enough to complain to the HA means it must have been loud . Serves you right to get a notice and may make you realise that you are not the most important person in the neighbourhood and be more respectful. You are lucky to be in a HA property so appreciate it and behave accordingly.

Housing associations expect adults to be able to attempt basic conversations themselves in the first instance.

What nonsense.

Tell me you are an anti social neighbour who doesn't give two hoots about your neighbours, without telling me you are an anti social neighbour who doesn't give two hoots about your neighbours. 🙄

And people in rural areas have neighbours too dear. 🙄

My neighbours either side are sheep thanks 👌

I am far from antisocial but if I want to enjoy my garden (previous houses) with the radio on an acceptable level, I will do. Sitting in silence......fuck that. And if have had to duck tape my kids mouths shut to stop them laughing and shrieking in the trampoline.

Surely you should have known that loud music is a disturbance and shouldn't have to be told. Why do you have it loud in the first place that the whole neighborhood can here it.

Start being showing consideration for others and others might then do the same back

This, just this.

Well thank goodness you don't have any neighbours. 'Children shrieking on the trampoline.' Good grief! And you actually think this is OK?!

I do feel sorry for the sheep though.

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 22:08

Yes it is a terraced property.

I had a neighbour who used to turn up her kitchen stereo so she could hear it in the garden and also have constant loud conversations on speaker phone. It was almost every day and often half the night as well. I lived with it for eight years and it was awful.

I’ve now moved to a house where none of my neighbours play loud music and it is bliss to be able to sit in my garden and just enjoy the birds singing and the peace and quiet… and not know every detail of their personal lives because of loud phone conversations!

Nobody minds a bit of music now and again for a barbecue or social event but constantly playing music (or speaker phone calls/tiktok videos etc) outside is an absolute dick thing to do. I don’t know when people got too entitled and selfish to use headphones anymore but I find it very sad.

justasking111 · 24/07/2026 22:11

I use my ear buds a lot DH doesn't like to hear my phone. So my advice to @autumnbeee is to get some.

The people who want to act like they don't have to consider others are the ones who should be living with no near neighbours, imho.

LauraJaneGrace · 24/07/2026 22:14

You do realise that none of your updates are painting you in a good light?

Probably not.
You appear to be completely ignorant.

Backedoffhackedoff · 24/07/2026 22:17

PhaedraTwo · 24/07/2026 21:06

They are not wasting the Housing Association's time. Dealing with antisocial tenants is part of their management responsibilities.

The OP isn't coming across as someone who would act reasonably if a complaint had been made direct.

They expect people to use common sense before taking their resource away from vulnerable tenants. Any housing officer would tell you to have a conversation first. There is nothing to think the OP would be a dangerous person to speak to 🙄

believe it or not, playing music in the garden doesn’t actually qualify as actionable ASB 😂 it might do if she carries on with it though.

Backedoffhackedoff · 24/07/2026 22:18

PhaedraTwo · 24/07/2026 21:58

What nonsense.

20 years in housing says different

Backedoffhackedoff · 24/07/2026 22:21

Bollihobs · 24/07/2026 21:20

What utter rubbish.

All sorts of people live in HA accommodation encompassing a wide spectrum of needs amongst them. To say there's "an expectation" to speak directly to a problem neighbour rather than go through the proper channels of the HA is as irresponsible as it is untrue and could cause someone reading such nonsense and believing it genuine anxiety.

Honestly? Then they need to pull themselves together. How embarrassing.

Swiftie1878 · 24/07/2026 22:21

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 20:34

I asked my other neighbour and mentioned it on the WhatsApp chat and only I received it.

It was an advisory letter about keeping it down and that the lyrics were found to be offensive due to young children in the area.

It just gets worse. Are you blasting ‘explicit’ music?

If so, you need to grow the f up.

Hankunamatata · 24/07/2026 22:25

Just stop playing loud music with inappropriate lyrics

Buy some headphones
