Letter from HA about loud music?

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 19:37

So basically I received a letter from my HA about loud music causing a disturbance to other residents here.

I am the only one who received it.

I suspect my NDN reported me as I don't think who else it could be?

Surely they could have just left a polite note or approached me?

I assume this will be on my file now?

Gardens aren’t the place for loud music. Music and dogs barking are equally annoying and I would struggle to cope with either.

Shinyandnew1 · 24/07/2026 20:10

Why do people think it’s ok to play loud music in the garden. Do they not realise or not care that their neighbours don’t want to listen to it?

Bollihobs · 24/07/2026 20:02

loads and loads of people don’t have the confidence to do that and would rather waste a companies time instead 🙄

How is it "wasting a company's time"??

That's their job isn't it?

In many cases it's right to be wary about approaching someone directly with an issue. It's the HA's job to deal with any ASB not individuals who for a multitude of reasons may not be able to deal directly.

Housing associations expect adults to be able to attempt basic conversations themselves in the first instance.

You seem to be really struggling with the idea your neighbours might not want to hear your music. You must be an absolute nightmare to live near.

Good job I dont have neighbours then.... but even if go to family bbqs etc on estates there is always music in the background.

The world has gone mad......

Exactly. It's not as easy as some people try and make it out to be to approach a nuisance neighbour who is playing loud music and being generally anti-social.

On what planet is anyone going to be fine with 'can you turn your music down please it's too loud?' Anyone who thinks it's OK to play loud music so that all the neighbours can hear, and act in an anti social way, is NOT going to be affable and cheerful and breezy, and say 'oh hi there, sorry about that, of COURSE I will turn the music down!' They are going to be arsey and defensive. No-one likes to admit they're wrong - and no-one likes being told what to do. And they will resent being confronted by someone saying their music is too loud!

Reporting it to the Housing Association WAS the 'mature' thing to do! How ludicrous, to suggest someone is childish and immature for not wanting to confront a neighbour who is being anti social. 🙄

People who play music so loud that their neighbours can hear it through the wall/hear it in their property, do NOT care about other people, and they need to be told to stop through the official channels.

.

BringBackCatsEyes · 24/07/2026 20:11

How often, for how long, at what time and how loud are you listening to it?

CombatBarbie · 24/07/2026 20:12

The noise level as ive said is important. Having it on in the background is normal, full blast is not.

There might ”always” be music on in the background but I promise you there are people living nearby who are made absolutely miserable by this noise.

Has it really never occurred to you that not everyone wants noise or music??

This. ^ It's extremely arrogant to assume that everyone wants to hear YOUR music.

So then move somewhere rural. Ffs the same people who whinge about kids playing in the street, people having bbqs (with no music) but hearing conversation and laughter.

CombatBarbie · 24/07/2026 20:15

Why cant the people annoyed by normal level noise wear sound cancelling headphones???

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 24/07/2026 20:17

You will need to keep the music down, as the complainant will have been informed that s/he can complain the the Local Authority and the Local Authority can take legal action re statutory noise

  • obiv if that were ever to happen your HA will be very unhappy re anti social behaviour and you could end up being on a warning re your tenancy...
Dobeebeedah · 24/07/2026 20:17

Don't Play Music/Have Anything Noisy/Arguments/Shouting in the garden. It's totally annoying and you could put headphones on. I really hate hearing other peoples music/radio/tiktok noise, as well as dogs barking. We have someone around here whose dog barks before 6am! If you are in a built up area keep your noise to a bare minimum. Just be considerate except if you are out on a farm with no neighbours. We are a small crowded island and everyone has to consider their impact on everyone nearby always.

TheyGrewUp · 24/07/2026 20:22

I wouldn't dream of playing music in the garden and we have half an acre, adjacent to neigbours with similar sized or bigger gardens. Next door had a marquee for a 21st and wrote to all the neigh ours and dropped off wine and chocolates.

@autumnbeee you have been anti-social. Apologise and get yourself some headphones.

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 19:42

On my HA file if I ever require a landlord reference from them?

I do play music in the garden at times but surely if it was a nuisance they could have asked me via the neighbours hood WhatsApp group/ Facebook group?

You shouldn’t need to be asked/told.
Stop being an obnoxious neighbour!

Tell me you are an anti social neighbour who doesn't give two hoots about your neighbours, without telling me you are an anti social neighbour who doesn't give two hoots about your neighbours. 🙄

And people in rural areas have neighbours too dear. 🙄

Createausername1970 · 24/07/2026 20:27

I do have music on in the garden, I play it through one of those small portable speakers. BUT it is only when I am sitting out and the speaker is right next to me. If I move more than a few feet away I can't hear it.

If your neighbours can hear your music then it's too loud.

Most people don't want confrontation and to be honest if I would have done the same if there was a complaints procedure.

Yes it would have been nice if they had approached you directly, but it would have been much nicer if they hadn't had the need to in the first place.

@autumnbeee's behaviour sounds very entitled and pretty selfish.

Several other posters on here are sounding the same. Glad they're not MY neighbours! Wink

Lifeomars · 24/07/2026 20:28

i approached my horrible neighbours on several occasions and politely asked them to keep the noise down, i was called a mother fucking cunt for my pains, and told to "fuck off woman, we don't speak to women, move if you don't like it" So while i am sure the OP would not respond like that, it shows just how scary it can be to complain about noise. I'd never do it again, I live alone and felt really intimidated

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 20:30

The neighbour I suspect it was makes it obvious that she dosent wish to engage with me.
She has deliberately waited for me to go in when she has parked up to avoid saying hello.

Dosent wave when she drives past.

Basically ignores me.

How do you know nobody else has had a letter?

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 24/07/2026 20:32

Soon as the suns out my neighbours start with their god awful music. I wouldn’t approach them as the boyfriend looks scary and gives me bad vibes. Please tell us you at least have good taste in music???

Mapletree1985 · 24/07/2026 20:33

My assumption about people who play loud music without consideration for others is that they're going to be pretty aggressive and unreasonable when I ask them to turn it down. Why should they? I can't tell them what to do! It's their right! etc...

If you're not like that, then I apologize, but it would always be my assumption and I'd err on the side of caution.

Just f.y.i., nobody else wants to be forced to listen to your music. That's actually a recognized form of torture.

autumnbeee · 24/07/2026 20:34

I asked my other neighbour and mentioned it on the WhatsApp chat and only I received it.

It was an advisory letter about keeping it down and that the lyrics were found to be offensive due to young children in the area.

Hasn't it occurred to you that during this long spell of good weather we've been having, almost all your neighbours will have been spending more time than usual in their garden? Even if they've been in the house, the chances are that they will have doors or windows open far more than normal. Sound carries and music is an individual taste, not to be inflicted on other people against their will. Your lack of consideration for other people is the problem here.
