AIBU to ask what you’d do if your DH revealed he was actually an international gun for hire, and not a salesman?

I ask you to imagine this. You’ve been with your DH for about ten years. One kid. You have a great income and lifestyle; a beautiful house, nice things, lovely car. It’s primarily funded by DH’s job in international sales. It takes him away from home for weeks, sometimes longer, but the material benefits are tangible and obvious. He also tells you one day that he’ll give it up and you’ll live a comfortable life.

Then the bombshell - you find out the sales job isn’t a sales job. Your DH is actually an international assassin. He has a vague moral code - he only takes out adults, only takes out men, only takes out those he considers are criminal or immoral (in his eyes) - bad guys basically. However, he remains a gun for hire.

AIBU to ask what you’d do?

And yes, I’ve been watching Day of the Jackal.

If he was Louis in the Charlie Parker series, I’d stay very happily married and keep stum. Unfortunately Louis is gay and very much in love with his partner, sigh.

TV series still in development, just know they are going to mess up casting.

EtA Also a fan of Win in the Bolitar series

Check the occupational pension benefits.

SurreySenMum26 · 24/07/2026 15:01

I would be gobsmacked as he can't even put the bin out without being prompted. He is a electrician by trade with around £5000 worth of tools at his disposal but cant fix our light fitting.

Like fuck he could pull that off.

TheIdlerReturns · 24/07/2026 15:02

So is this happening to you? Otherwise what's your interest in it? I'll bite, so if my DH turns out to be an assassin, my first concern will be for his safety because it's a lot more dangerous than being a sales manager. DH is currently off sick so the body count will be down for quite a while. He's a bit too old to be doing that sort of stuff, so I'd be trying to make him get a hobby or set up some kind of business enterprise that doesn't require an arsenal to be successful.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 24/07/2026 15:02

I’d want plenty of duty frees and the low down on the best hotels for us to stay in.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/07/2026 15:04

Die.

Of laughter.

This is a man who has the spatial awareness of a Cranefly. There's no way on earth he'd manage to get a watermelon into a tree, much less shoot it with a rifle that needed to be assembled before use.

I mean clearly, this is not happening to me in reality. It’s a hypothetical question.

I have watched enough Jason Statham films to know you don't just retire peacefully from that job. People are always looking for you, either for revenge or to hire you for one last job noone else can possibly do.

However if we are already married for 10 years I'm probably already in danger so I'd go with it and pretend we never had that conversation 😁

W0tnow · 24/07/2026 15:06

To the doubters, I’d have agreed with you but Eddie really is very good in it. Master casting.

It’s pretty much what special forces do….only for nation states…..depends what your moral code is.

I would not have an issue with my partner being SAS/SBS…..but then that is nation state/ national security…..but then if I drill down to it, it actually isn’t. As you get idiots eg journalists and am sure others who decide to travel to where they shouldn’t and the SAS/SBS go in to rescue them, and there is collateral damage there.

Answer - I really don’t know.

Yet in the novel, there is absolutely no indication that the Jackal has a family. Or even a friend. Or a name known to anyone else.
Times like this I can't stand Hollywood! It's much better with the mystery.
When I first read this post my mind went to True Lies, RED, Nobody, The Family Plan... There's so many ! But the completely unknowable assassin: very few, which was one of the things that made the novel and the original film so good.
Sounds like the new one is just following a typical, overworked formula.

Well, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility. I'm not one to rule things out on the basis they're not common or in plain sight. People do these jobs in countries across the world for governments or through organised crime. Spies are among us too. It could be you.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 24/07/2026 15:12

Think I’d find it a bit of a turn on tbh!

FeliciaFancybottom · 24/07/2026 15:14

I don't think you could travel around the world killing people without being a total psychopath, so I'd leave the bastard.
Everything you own has also been paid for with literal blood and death, and that's a bit icky imo.

AmyDudley · 24/07/2026 15:15

I'd tell him his position is morally indefensible.

Then I'd kill him.

Meadowfinch · 24/07/2026 15:15

I'd assume it was another fantasy if ex claimed that.

Not only because he proved to be an habitual liar, but because if you gave him a gun, he couldn't hit a barn door from ten paces.

As an international hitman, he would have starved. 😁

99bottlesofkombucha · 24/07/2026 15:15

I’d laugh and laugh, but at least it would explain why he’s such a terrible salesman.

Userexcuser · 24/07/2026 15:16

I'd look round the ginormous mansion I lived in and go "oh right, that explains how we afford all this"

I did spend the whole of the Day of the Jackal confused because I'd got it mixed up with the Night Manager.

Dhejeje · 24/07/2026 15:16

I would entrust my child to a relative and get myself sectioned because I would be afraid

And the GF/DW is always the bait or victim when it all goes to shit.

On the other hand, Jason Statham.

Paganpentacle · 24/07/2026 15:16

I would immediately compile a list and hope he did freebies.
Or at least offer a discount.

Well you missed out because he was brilliant in it.

I think you misread. I watched the series. I just said I didn't fancy ER, so I wouldn't, in Ursula Corbero's shoes have dated him whether he was flogging software or assassinations.

CypressMoon · 24/07/2026 15:19

If it was my actual DH I would gently escort him to the GP surgery and explain he'd lost his marbles.

If it was a theoretical DH, I would secretly pack and leave with DC next time he was away, and go somewhere I was sure he could not find us. But if he looked like Eddie Redmayne, we'd never have married in the first place.

Your post didn't say you'd watched it, so I can't have misread it!

I agree I don't fancy him either though.

You did misread it. I said I didn't fancy Eddie Redmayne. I made no reference to whether I'd watched it or not. You assumed something I didn't say.
