Husband having a go when I touch up make up on holiday

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:35

Does your husband have patience with you touching up your make up/putting in a few curls in your hair when you’re on holiday. Obviously in the morning we usually agree a time to leave the room so that’s less an issue. Although he does insist I do my hair / makeup in the bathroom and forbids putting on the light in the room which can be awkward when I need to look for items.

But if we go to the room for a freshen up he is completely on me and moaning if I decide I want to touch up my make up. Just saying “come on hurry up” “we’re wasting time” the entire time etc. Im definitely not putting on a full face just cleaning up lip liner/mascara or brushing my hair and reapplying deodorant. 10 mins at most. I don’t know his moaning has absolutely annoyed me. 10 mins either way should not make a difference to anything. Why can’t he just sit on his phone and not nag me for 10 mins. Is this normal?

i enjoy looking my best. I know not everyone cares for make up but I do

he nags non stop even if we have agreed I can have 10 mins.

Literally is not,

maybe if posters like you didn't do the constant jabs trying to put yourself on a pedestal that implies you are better than those who don't use make up (which makes it harder for those who don't btw as men then expect everyone to falsify themselves - which sorry wearing make up is as you aren't showing your true self no matter how much you deny that.

I agree pick me's (like you) are the worst flavour of misogyny and don't help women at all, so thank you so much for your pick me behaviour and reinforcing stereotypes for men.

pick me, I'll falsify myself to pander to you and fit your unrealistic expectations of women. PICK ME!!! PICK!!!

What a ridiculous post.
I love make up. I enjoy the act of applying it and creativity of creating different ‘looks’. I don’t think that makes me better than people who don’t wear make up, it’s just an interest of mine. I’m not falsifying myself, I still look like me.

I’m not wearing it for men. In fact I’d be quite happy to never have a man find me attractive ever again.

If you don’t want to wear make up then don’t. But that doesn’t make you better than work who do.

NullaEffugium · 22/07/2026 22:48

He should just wait for you in the hotel lobby or go on ahead and get your table or taxi or whatever. Either that or insist on your own hotel room.

StrikeForever · 22/07/2026 22:50

BasketCaseBug · 22/07/2026 18:03

He shouldn't be telling you what to do but to be honest my husband drives me mad faffing about in the room on holiday and it does feel like we are wasting our holiday time.

Yes, mine has OCD, so there is always lots of faffing before we go anywhere. I bite my tongue for the most part, but I sympathise with your husband. As for telling you what to do, it sounds like he just gets pissed off if you put the light on when he is still sleeping. I wouldn’t be a fan of that either. If I was away on holiday with a friend who faffed about with hair curling and make up in the morning, only to return to it at points in the day, I’d be irritated too (and biting my tongue).

onetrickrockingpony · 22/07/2026 22:32

@Megifer they’re on holiday together. If he goes downstairs to wait for OP then he’s still waiting for her. If he’s on his phone watching something on the bed then he’s still waiting for her. What would NOT be waiting for her is if he decides he’s going to go out and do something completely different. I’m sure she’d be really delighted by that. Ultimately we don’t know how many times she’s doing this per day and also actually how long it is taking.

This is a different point now tbf.

One that takes me back to my first thought when I read the op which was why is he so needy that he has to stay in the room. So what if hes "waiting" in the bar or whatever? Cant he do without op's presence for 10 mins?

beAsensible1 · 22/07/2026 22:52

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:41

Forbid maybe be overstating but I don’t use the light in the main room until he is up. Which is only ever 10 mins before we agree to leave. He only needs to shower and dress in the morning. Whereas I do tend to do make up and hair.

Sounds like you have different standards for personal grooming. But if it’s a reasonable time you should be able to put the light on and him wear a sleep mask.

id tell him to wait for me in the bar, constant nagging annoying. But mine spends more than 10 minutes getting ready and knows to go in after me.

Megifer · 22/07/2026 22:53

MJagain · 22/07/2026 22:22

Because we don’t know if the OP is expecting him to wait for her / accompany her back to the room multiple times a day etc

Op says they agree on the 10 mins.

"Agree" tho.... 😂 not a chance Id need agreement.

Parcelpass · 22/07/2026 22:56

Whats the rush? Its a holiday. Tell him to relax and leave you alone.

ToThePoint2026 · 22/07/2026 23:01

Totally get this went away with a friend once and never again who would touch up everything several times a day. I love my makeup but holidays are exactly that chill out lol

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/07/2026 23:01

I have regularly fallen out with my partner over this.
Now i just say ‘i want to get ready in peace, i’ll meet you later’.

Noshadelamp · 22/07/2026 23:03

It's your holiday and your time as much as it is his. He's rude and entitled.
Noy DH doesn't moan and if I'm going to be longer than 10 mins I let him know so he can go for a short walk or make use of the time rather than hanging round waiting.

beAsensible1 · 22/07/2026 23:05

I’d time yourself at your normal touch up pace next time.

whenever someone goes back for a touch up it’s never 10 mins especially if hair is included.

is it a touch up before lunch. Or a reset before going to dinner (which is actually just getting ready)

how often is it. Why is he going back with you?

Nopersbro · 22/07/2026 23:08

I read the first part, about not wanting the light on, as the two of you having agreed to a time to leave in the morning and you're getting up earlier than him as it take you longer to get ready. In that case it makes sense that you get ready in the bathroom, quietly, and ideally either leave your things in there or have them in a bag to take in. Apart from that he sounds like a weirdo, especially when you've both agreed "ten minutes in the room" and he's bellyaching that you're taking the full ten minutes. (It's kind of strange that he even knows what you're doing in the bathroom - would he rant and rave if you were changing your tampon and rinsing out your knickers?)

If this is the only issue, can you just completely tune him out and ignore him when he starts? Or tell him that if he's in a rush he can go downstairs and wait for you there.

What would NOT be waiting for her is if he decides he’s going to go out and do something completely different. I’m sure she’d be really delighted by that. I'D be delighted by this if my husband moaned and groaned whenever it took me ten minutes to get ready and couldn't be bothered to wait even when he'd agreed to!! Let him go FOMO his way around Sozopol or Nida at breakneck speed; I'll take my time (and look fabulous) wandering around without a toddleresque running commentary on my holiday pace.

youplonkerrodney · 22/07/2026 23:09

Ask him what time he wants to leave, then you go up to the room ten mins before that time. Say “I’ll meet you in the bar”. I don’t get why he’s following you up there.

SheDoesntEvenGoHerex · 22/07/2026 23:10

He’d hate me then. I need at least an hour and if I need to wash my hair then usually 1.5 hours.

DH is free to do whatever he wants in that time. Usually stays round the pool / beach a bit longer or comes back and sleeps / scrolls, failing that he will have a quick shower and head off for a drink while he waits.

it’s your holiday too and i like to look nice on holiday and that means doing my hair and make up!!

CelestialCandyfloss · 22/07/2026 23:16

Tell him to go on ahead of you and you can catch up with him, so you can get ready in peace.

BBelissimo · 22/07/2026 23:22

palorina · 22/07/2026 17:43

I thought DH was having a go at putting on make up there.

😂

jellyfish798 · 22/07/2026 23:24

Ten mins is nothing! I have half my wardrobe out, spending ages mixing and matching with handbags, jewellery, shoes. Always like a cup of tea and some music on while I get ready too. He is lucky, you're v quick!

PurpleAxe · 22/07/2026 23:26

I do want I want to look after myself.

My husband does the same.

I would tell him to fuck off with his attitude.

Imseriouslyyouguys · 22/07/2026 23:29

“forbids putting on the light in the room”

FORBIDS?! Since when was he in charge?

Cherrytree86 · 22/07/2026 23:30

He’s a knobhead.

he should be freshening up too… cleaning teeth, replying deodorant, etc.

socks1107 · 22/07/2026 23:33

No he enjoys the lie on the bed while I do it and then we head back out! Takes me @30minutes. He would never moan at this

Namechangewegovyjune26 · 22/07/2026 23:40

Geoleo · 22/07/2026 17:41

I get not putting the light on too early but 30 mins before you leave is fine!! I’d be pushing back on that.

PS5Gamer · 22/07/2026 19:27

Another day on Mumsnet, another Dickhead husband. Switch the light on, and tell him to get up and shut the fuck up.

If my partner/travel buddy got up to do their hair and make up while I was asleep (an hour before I needed to get up) I'd be telling them not to turn the hotel room light on, too. It's hugely inconsiderate to do that, when hair and make up can be done in the bathroom.

saraclara · 22/07/2026 23:48

He’d hate me then. I need at least an hour and if I need to wash my hair then usually 1.5 hours.

I'd hate you, too. I'm so glad I'm not a bloke, and married to someone who takes that long to get ready every morning. And on holiday, too! I want to be up and doing something, not waiting for a 1.5 morning toilette to be finished.

TheFormerMrsTruelove · 23/07/2026 00:15

If you’ve told him that you need ten minutes to freshen up and he’s not giving you that, even when he’s said he’ll give you the time you want (how very magnanimous of him, btw) then you need to show him that you work on a stopwatch basis. Set ten minutes on your phone. Then every time he says cmon, hurry up, how much longer? You stop the clock and count to twenty before starting it again. Every single time. And if he protests, tell him the more he complains, the longer it takes. So he can either whine and have it take half an hour, or he can quietly sit down for ten minutes and you’ll be ready to go when you said you would be.
