Holidays with grandparents

No judgement either way but just wondering what everyone’s set ups are with holidays. I can tell my mum is put out that we don’t always holiday with her but we can only really afford one holiday and prefer to go alone.
do you holiday with grandparents and if so do they pay? Any friends I have that holiday with their parents/grandparents to kids it’s because their parents pay? Just wondering if that’s the norm as my mum wouldn’t pay for anything for us which is fine but just wondering if im being unreasonable by wanting to just do my only holiday with my husband and kids?

We usually do two holidays per year - one without my parents and one with. We really love both, and we pay for our share of the joint one. They do usually take us out for a few meals or may more of the costs while there, but we pay our own flights and half of the accomodation. We enjoy spending time with them and having help with childcare too. But I can see this would totally depend on the family dynamics and personal preferences involved.

We go away every few years with parents, all pay for ourselves! Nice mix of family memories and time with just our immediate little family.

We go every year and yes my parents pay. Bit embarrassing but we wouldn't really be able to go away, certainly not on this standard of holiday, any other way.

Similarly, they need a lot of support on holiday so they wouldn't really be able.to gi alone.

I don't think you're unreasonable to want to go with just your family

We're going on holiday with grandparents next week. They've paid because they have strong opinions about the quality of hotels and would really struggle to deal with the 2/3 star we would be able to afford. We have some strong boundaries in place though like having our own car - not spending every minute with each other (Stately Homes type grandparents so lots of history of control). With all that, I think it'll be nice and the kids will enjoy it. If we did only what they wanted we'd have really miserable, bored kids and my husband would really struggle.

I go with mine. They pay. I do buy the odd meal out and ice creams. It’s not my only holiday. We do have a great time

We used to go away with my inlaws pre kids and did a few holidays post kids. They were very flexible, happy to fit in with kids, happy to do a mix of eating in and out. Have not done the same with my parents. My mum spent childhood holidays moaning that she couldnt wait until they could go away without us for a real holiday and sulks if she has to spend anytime doing something someone else wants to do that she doesnt. I do feel sad that it isnt domething we could do, particularky as we had great trips with inlaws.
