To be annoyed at the assumption that I am a Mrs?

So I completed a update form at the dentist for myself and my daughter; the ones they routinely hand out. It didn't ask for my title, but I ticked the "married" box.
Next thing I know, my name pings up on the screen as Mrs .
Just no!!
At the end of my appointment I went to ask for it to be corrected, but AIBU to be annoyed at the assumption?
A bit like the thread today referring to the new prime minister's wife as Mrs Burnham. She is Ms van Heel.

Brad Pitt is obviously shorthand for a man who is deemed to be extremely attractive.
Does not have to be Brad himself.

@Cheeseandolivesplease .
Sorry hit post too soon.

I'm saying that to have a strong reaction (as opposed to just politely pointing out that you prefer to be known as whatever and not giving it a second thought afterwards) to being called Mrs would indicate a certain, maybe sub-conscious, desire not to be associated with that husband.

Anyway, I won't take accusations of misogyny seriously from a person who is OK with marriages being annulled because of non-consummation so it's water off a duck's back.

@QuintadosMalvados You're digging yourself an even deeper hole here. So the "average" woman aspires to be a Mrs Hisname then do they?
And they did not just retain their "stage names" btw - they retained their legal names.

Edited

Yes the average woman doesn't mind Mrs!
I loved becoming a Mrs.
I loved referring to my partner as my husband.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 23/07/2026 12:02

@EvieBB Yes both strong and successful women in their own right who were self-assured enough not to need to tell the entire world they were married to Brad Pitt by changing their last name.
They were also both also strong, established and independent enough to divorce him when their marriages failed 💪

Because not every body is Mrs. A significant proportion of people don't change their name nowadays. I can't be bothered to get annoyed with the person but unless someone is very elderly I do think it is a rather ignorant assumption.

Well I'm not elderly and have never heard of this. Perhaps up North we're more traditional?
I think it's a perfectly reasonable assumption to make, hardly ignorant. Yes there might be some women who do this but in my experience they are in the minority. In fact I've never even heard of this!

Cheeseandolivesplease · 23/07/2026 12:04

@EvieBB Thanks for the compliment ❤️ I also have a husband btw.

I live "up north" Do you seriously not know any women who didn't change their name when they got married?

Why on earth would you get so offended though?
It wouldn't even occur to me to get offended if someone assumed if I was a Mrs if I'm married.
Perhaps this is a new thing, but I've never heard of it until very recently (my daughter has actually said something similar about wanting to be referred to a 'Ms' if she gets married)
However, I don't feel that being a 'Mrs' takes away from a woman's strength or success.
How on earth do you arrive at that conclusion?
I think each to their own. Do what makes you happy and what feel right for you.
Peronally, I'm proud of my happy marriage as I spent my formative years witnessing my parents' poor marriage, along with childhood sa, followed by years in an abusive relationship of my own - so forgive me for for being proud of myself that I broke those ties and that I actually managed to achieved a strong and successful marriage, despite the odds.💪 For those reasons, I celebrate by 'Mrs' title (along with my being my own person in my own right) and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. 💪

No, I honestly don't. All of my friends, colleageus and family members changed their names.

Come to think of it - my Asian neighbour didn't change her name, but I assumed that was an Asian thing...

Women don't change their names on marriage in lots of countries. I married 30 years ago and didn't change my name, partly for professional reasons and partly because I didn't see the point. I knew other people who didn't change their name then although less common than now.

You cannot seriously be looking at two extremely rich and famous female film stars-who are not the norm- and applying what they do to Mrs Average?

I mean really?

70% of people who voted think yabu, OP.
That's pretty conclusive, wouldn't you say?

Maybe they think op shouldn't be annoyed at the receptionist but it doesn't mean they don't find the title system annoying in the first place!!

You are the one tgat mentioned brad pitt. Anyway why should keeping your own name only be for rich films stars!!

I'm not against it - like I said, each to their own, but Ive only ever heard of celebrities doing this...and nobody in real life (apart from my lovely neighbor). I must have lived a sheltered life ha

Cheeseandolivesplease · 23/07/2026 13:08

@EvieBB Of course. Only women that take Mrs HisName can truly be happily married. I'll let my husband know and request he removes his double-barrel with immediate effect 😀
What do you do job-wise out of interest?

Yeah but by Brad Pitt she actually meant not Brad Pitt, obviously. And certainly not the real life examples of women who have married him, because that would be inconvenient.

A strange go to example however way you slice it, as he's rumoured to be quite the nasty piece of work.

Better informed? Lol. Says somebody who thinks outliers like Ms Jolie and Ms Aniston represent the average woman.

You won't reply, or if you do it will be to denigrate, but instead of insulting those that disagree, why not have a think about why your reaction to being called 'Mrs' is strongly offensive to you?

Not just 'Oh please receptionist I prefer Ms, could you change it? Ta very much.' and not giving it a second thought, but strong enough that you ask a bunch of randoms on the Internet about it.
(And, might I add, starting your thread with 'So'.)

70% of which you basically label as numpties for not agreeing with you.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 23/07/2026 13:54

@QuintadosMalvados Yes my conclusion remains the same. Probably even more so.
I mean, to think so many women honestly believe "Mrs" is the default position, that a Ms is someone who is either divorced, a lesbian, or both, that titles are trivial, that use the offensive "first world problems"... these are all borne of ignorance.

Well OP, my married Oxbridge educated female relatives - both of whom have PhDs-do not give a shiny shite if they're addressed as 'Mrs', so I think I'll just ignore your statement that women who have no objection to being called 'Mrs` are ignorant airheads ta very much.

Cheeseandolivesplease · 23/07/2026 14:50

@QuintadosMalvados Well first off the dental practice don't know who my husband is as he isn't registered with them!
But yes - clearly I wish to be disassociated from my husband because a) I am not a Mrs Hisname and b) He is not, as I imagine you would describe - although still awaiting to hear your definition - a "manly man."
I mean - he even added on to his name when we married and puts our little one to bed most nights so I can finish off my work admin from home! Also took off a year's unpaid leave to support my return to my full-on career when I was returning from mat leave. What sort of man does that make him I wonder?!! #legend.

I don't really care but since you ask.

I'm going to try to not make this about you as a person nor your dh, but just because a man is kind it doesn't necessarily make him attractive.

I think that's a fair comment.

hydriotaphia · 23/07/2026 15:12

I would find this annoying too. I haven’t taken my husband name so it is simply incorrect to call me Mrs MySurname. Also unclear why a dentist would need to know marital status in the first place!
