To be annoyed at the assumption that I am a Mrs?

So I completed a update form at the dentist for myself and my daughter; the ones they routinely hand out. It didn't ask for my title, but I ticked the "married" box.
Next thing I know, my name pings up on the screen as Mrs .
Just no!!
At the end of my appointment I went to ask for it to be corrected, but AIBU to be annoyed at the assumption?
A bit like the thread today referring to the new prime minister's wife as Mrs Burnham. She is Ms van Heel.

So those who use ‘Mrs’, indicate a lack of education…?

Edited

I think they are less likely to be educated to at least degree level.

So imagine her husband ticks the box that says married

No one calls him Mr Hername do they?

Do you know what time period we’re living in?

Actually yes. If someone who knows me assumes I am using a married name they call DH Mr Hername .

I used to get wound up about these things before I was married because I wanted to be addressed as Ms and again after I was married and hadn't changed my name. But you know, it's really not important and I no longer care.
DH answers to Mr Bluebird and I answer to Mrs DH without bothering to correct anyone.

Its in reference to the post from @stillhiding1990 saying she wants no legal connection with her husband. A lot of the rest of this is just people showing up how daft they and the people around them are, which is no great shakes really, but understanding that marriage is a legal contract is actually really important.

Sorry, I missed that. 😊

I was actually talking with someone last week about this. She was buying a house with her boyfriend (in his name only!) and they were planning to start a family etc. but did the "marriage is only a bit of paper" speech. I tried to explain why it matters but I dont think she really understood. She's 19 and in love and they'll live happily ever after. I even talked about the impact if he dies but nope, nothing bad will happen. Obviously I hope it doesnt but she is so sweet and nieve and would it be really easy to take advantage of her.

I love being a Mrs, my marriage is so important to me, I can't stand Ms, i just don't like the sound of it and always associated it with old spinsters or divorcees. I insisted on being Miss til i became Mrs and wouldn't want to be anything else.

I haven't heard snyone use the word "spinster" for decades.😂 Many younger women are using Ms. Do you think they should use miss if not married? Is your marriage nit important to your DH as he presumably didn't change his title?

LeaveMeBee · 21/07/2026 12:00

Sunseaandtea · 21/07/2026 11:46

Would it help the cause if we also discarded the marital ring on the third finger left hand. After all it appears disclosing ones marital status is so utterly demeaning.

To be fair, I didn't wear my wedding ring after pregnancy weight gain made it too tight. I still considered myself very much married and loyal.

Meanwhile, my 'husband' (if u can call him that) cheated whilst wearing his wedding ring.

So even a wedding ring means nothing to some people.

Personally, yes.

Woah!! If she's contributing financially, she is INSANE to only have the house in his name.

Are you sure it's not an abusive relationship?
Financial abuse springs to mind here, hopefully not the case, but huge red flag if he is encouraging this and she's oblivious

My husband semi regularly orders something online and gets it delivered to a shop to pick up. The first time I ordered it for him and was cross with him so I gave his name as "Lord first name, Farquar-Augustus, Surname".

I didnt tell him. He did not find it funny when he picked it up and the shop assistant said "we dont get many lords here". However, now neither of us can figure out how to change Lord to Mr and remove the middle name online. He doesn't want to phone up the company and explain so he is stuck with everyone thinking that's his name.

It has given me HOURS of amusement! 🤣

And do you know what, no one has died because he doesn't have Mr at the front. In fact I'd say no one cares.

BTW- he could absolutely pass as a bumbling scruffy old money but broke type Lord.

Did he not need ID to pick up the parcel?

This is fascinating to me!

So you associate Ms as being educated to degree+ level?

Whereas I generally associate it as the woman being divorced or separated. (Although I recognise she could of course still be degree educated)

Shows how different peoples assumptions/beliefs and judgements are..!

I dont tell strangers I'm a mum. Does that mean I find parenthood demeaning? Of course not, it just means that strangers don't need to know. It's generally none of their business.

I'll say it again. Why are women expected to announce whether they've captured a man but it's somehow not important that people know that about a man?

BTW I don't wear my wedding ring either. My fingers are too fat and I always go through stages where I can't stand wearing any jewelry. It has zero impact on my marriage and certainly doesn't reflect how I feel about my husband.

Do you really go round checking women's fingers for a ring? Why?

when people think the "Patriarchy" is our greatest enemy, they clearly have never met one of those patronising woman.

Some women really are insufferable if we don't follow THEIR rule and opinion, we might as well laugh at them.

you can wear whatever you want, no one cares. Why does it bother you if other women, and men, decide to wear a ring? Gay or straight?

well at least we're not the victims here I suppose, so that's something 😂

Master is for young boys. Maybe up to 10ish?

Besides I dont know anyone who uses it other than my late very elderly aunt who used to post £1 sellotape to a birthday card to my brother when he was very young

Ouch.

Yeah, that's the sharp end of this sort of poor understanding. We just have to hope she's not on the relationships board regretting her life choices a few years down the line.

Lentilcakes · 21/07/2026 12:20

Just go up to the desk and politely tell them your actual title/name. That’s all it takes. I’m a Mrs but if someone referred to me as Ms I’d just tell them ‘I’m Mrs…’. I wouldn’t be offended. Yes, maybe all women should be Ms, but until then just correct when wrong.

My last name is often pronounced wrong which is bonkers as it’s a fairly common name w 4 letters! That annoys me.

Here you go lending weight to the association between education at degree level or above and opinion about the use of Ms.

No. Just old enough to have more serious concerns in life than whether someone uses the wrong title.

My degree confers me with Dr. I stick with Mrs rather than be perpetually outraged and offended. It must be utterly exhausting.

I am literally laughing at the one who made that statement, because I find the superior so-called "feminists" who try to impose their views funny.

Nothing "feminists' about them, they just give a bad name to something that should be a positive for us, but there you go.

I suppose the use of "Ms" can be helpful if we assume wearing it you are one of those bore

It wasn't "a nasty dig". I haven't said anything about the patriarchy. I just think that women who keep their own surnames and use Ms (or Dr) after marriage are statistically more likely to be educated to degree level than those that don't. Interesting thst it offends you.

It's absolutely crazy! She said she was paying I think 1/3 of the deposit so it wasn't fair to joint own. She intended to contribute more to the mortgage to make it up with some vague plans to add her name at some point in the future. Madness!

We work with someone who used to be a property lawyer and I asked him to have a word. He was equally as horrified. I know I'm sticking my nose in and she's an adult but she just doesnt have a clue about life. She is the youngest 19 year old I've ever met. I'd feel so bad if I didnt do my best to get her to understand. The ex lawyer said he'd want someone to explain the consequences if it was his daughter. He said you can make a note on the deeds to reflect that it isn't 50/50 ownership.

I just want her to understand what she is agreeing to. If she still goes ahead, then at least she won't be in for a nasty shock.

I don't see any other signs of abuse or red flags. It seems like she has been equally involved with everything and talks about how she's spending her wages each pay day. I just think it's a lack of understanding rather than anything nefarious. I hope so anyway.
