To ask which city you'd move to in England if you didn't live there already

I am thinking about it. Would prefer not London tbh although appreciate that's where the jobs are (and in some ways it's probably the easiest fit for outsiders).

Where is friendly, has stuff to do, jobs and the like. I think my answer is going to end up being Newcastle (but I like York).

I’ve got a DD at uni in Edinburgh and another in Liverpool - both great cities.

I live in one of the places mentioned a few times here. Was in Kew for the 1st time this week and thought - if I won the lottery (I’ve never done it!), I’d live here!

Oxford. Charming in its own right, easily accessible to London and other places. Amazing culture and natural beauty. I found lovely people there.

I don't know how older people can bear London

It's so much effort to get from a to b when you're feeling less than great and there are so many dangerous or aggro people

It’s absolutely stunning, and also not too large.
I want to uni in York nav have lots of lovely weekends there since. I love it and it will always have a very special place in my heart. But, after living in London for over 25 years, I’d miss the huge variety of arts and culture I have access to here.
I do also love Cambridge.
I’ve often thought Manchester would be my second city of choice. I’m originally from East Lancs so it’d kind of be like going home (though I can’t see me ever moving out of London)

Def not York, tiny little place that thinks its the jewel of the north. Over run with hens and stags, silly little shops and overpriced homes. It also has many poor areas that people ignore because they have a Minster.

What's better about it than England?

Plymouth. It's a great city (has It's rough parts like most places) but it's close to the sea, the people are so friendly, house prices are reasonable for a city. Also so much history with the Hoe, the Barbican, Tinside Lido plus lovely parks and the Torpoint ferry to Cornwall. Plymstock or Plympton are on the outskirts and are lovely. Love walking in Devonport Park which overlooks the Navy dockyard. I'd move there tomorrow if I could.

I'm from.York and I live in London. It's is true -- everywhere else is rubbish.

(Joking. Cambridge, Bath or somewhere nice by the sea)

London! Love it

York is so overrated, very poor roads, traffic is awful and there are only 3 taxis to serve the whole City.

I couldn't contemplate, living anywhere else, than where l live now. I live in the Yorkshire Dale's in the village of Grassington. All creatures great and small, film the village scenes here...

We’ve probably got the best public transport in the country and the Freedom pass means over 60s get free travel all over the city after 9am. Therefore there is super easy access to alk the theatres, museums, art galleries etc.
Its also very well served by supermarkets, markets and local shops so you don’t need to go vey far to get bread, milk etc.
in my experience (through work) there are lots of opportunities to access community groups and activities due to there being a concentration of third sector organisations.
I can definitely see why older people stay here

I loved London pre kids but I wouldn't want to live there with a young family.

We live in a village near Cambridge, it's lovely in many ways but a bit meh in terms of the landscape. No hills or beaches or forests, just flat farmland as far as the eye can see.

Interesting to see so many people say Norwich. DH took a job in Norwich last year and we decided not to move, he just mostly works from home and has a long commute. I keep coming back to it because people love it, the house prices are lower and the secondary schools seem better. I'd love to hear why people love it so much, maybe we should up sticks!

If I had free choice, probably Chester, the beaches and mountains of north Wales are accessible, as are Manchester and Liverpool, plus Chester itself is lovely and has everything you need.

Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, Winchester, Edinburgh, York, Durham, Lichfield, Salisbury.

All quite different and with their own challenges, but lovely cathedral cities, capitals, ancient capitals or regional centres with lots to do, and thriving individual identities.
