Give it a rest. It's a really good song. Yeah, fair play, people singing it in parks is tedious but on the whole it is an excellent, memorable song which has objectively stood the test of time. Even if it's not to your taste calling it "dirge" is objectively absurd. It's artistically very impressive. I couldn't do better.

Heroes was used during the 2012 London Olympics. A while ago, granted, but still quite recent in the scheme of things.
In any case, to use that song as an unironic anthem about someone being a hero is to misuse/misunderstand it.
