Here’s a scenario - it might seem familiar to many of you.
The premise: At the next election, it is now entirely plausible that Reform will be elected to government and Farage becomes PM.
After two years the electorate are sick of him and Reform's polling numbers are plummeting. So Reform decide to replace him with a more populist leader (like Labour just did).
They find an ultra safe seat and persuade a Reform MP to step down, forcing a by-election (like Labour just did). They choose a candidate who they know will win the by-election. (Just like Labour did). It is Tommy Robinson.
Then through a concerted pressure campaign, Reform MP's coerce the prime minister to resign. (Like Labour just did). And then they elect, uncontested, their brand new MP to be PM. (Like Labour just did).
Tommy Robinson is now PM.
I fear Labour have just set a new norm for political bait-and-switch. I know a lot of people are unhappy about what has happened, but not enough people are deeply alarmed by what has just happened.
