To be sick to death of Andy Burnham already

Viviennemary · 17/07/2026 20:57

I'm sick to death already of seeing Andy Burnham and hearing his voice. And he isnt even PM yet. Come back Keir Starmer. All is forgiven. I dont know how I'm going to suffer 3 or four more years of him in charge. Playing the part of the working class hero who is going to save the country. Give me strength.

I am not a Tory but I have sympathy for Theresa May, she tried her best in difficult circumstances. She didn’t support Brexit but tried to do the right thing by the country. Just because other people made fun of her as a person and not her policies doesn’t mean it’s ok to do it.
Your argument is basically other people behaved badly so it’s ok for me to do it. That’s the politics of the playground. Do you want a grown up political system or do you like our dysfunctional, childish, game playing politics?

That's exactly how I feel. People shouldn't accept that, and should rise above it.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/07/2026 06:51

If you're talking about classism, one might do well to remember this works both ways.

I wasn't talking about classism at all, just accent prejudice. If people are so prejudiced about accents that they assume they are synonymous with class, that makes it even worse. Accents are more about geography than class.

I've been referred to as "posh" by northern friends, because I have an RP accent, but I grew up on the roughest council estate in Croydon and lived in various dodgy parts of "Sarf London" until I moved to Sussex in my 30s.

Gloriia · 18/07/2026 08:54

He's a good public speaker I'll give him that. He doesn't look like he's about to burst into tears, that's good too. He looks comfortable. All skills thst would work well say in amateur dramatics. For PM you want someone experienced, an experienced MP. He is not.

Again you’re wrong. He was an MP for 16 years from 2001 to 2017 and held various Cabinet positions.

MagdaLenor · 18/07/2026 08:59

Gloriia · 18/07/2026 08:55

No i didn't say he was like a junior in a bank. I said the situation was comparable to a junior in a bank being handed a ceo position. Would never happen.

... and I'm saying it's not comparable.
This is because he was the Mayor of Manchester, not a local councillor of six months' experience.

Yes, sorry, I realise you weren't referring to classicism but regional accents. I got that wrong. It was another poster.

I don't understand how a local councillor can get the job of PM via a fake by election? A degree in English lit I believe doesn't seem ideal for the top job. What's he going to do quote a Midsummer Night's Dream at NATO meeetings?
I know he's had some political experience in the past but none very successful.

He seems a bit of an imposter. Yes his public speaking and body lagnauge are miles better then wet Starmer but surely they was a middle ground between Starmer and a local councillor albeit with the title of 'mayor'?!

What is it you do?

Greenleavesandsunshine · 18/07/2026 09:01

EasternStandard · 18/07/2026 08:57

Did you point out how bad this was to the posters at the time?

Of course I did, as did others. One of the issues AB wants to address is the political game of point scoring, it does nothing, it doesn’t help the country and it causes division. In Manchester he has worked across party boundaries.
Try it, try being a grown up and consider the issues rather than making childish comments about him being a junior in a bank. Try realising AB has actually been exercising power in Manchester, while many back bench MPs have very little power or influence. That’s why AB left Westminster because he wanted to do something rather than sit around point scoring.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/07/2026 08:54

He will pick up where Starmer left off in continuing to blame the Tories. Always looking backwards are Labour. If his bold entrance is about taking us back a few decades, it is going to make a proportion of people extremely happy and another very miserable. So Tories part 2. He's showing he is the antithesis of making something for everybody. No PM is capable of achieving that so it's all bluster.

And yet he hasn't blamed the Tories, has he? His focus is continually on the changes Labour need to make. Several times he said 'we have got it wrong' and even apologised.
He spoke about the pre Thatcher era because he wants to reindustrialise the areas of the country who lost their livelihoods and have not recovered from that. You know, those ordinary working people who need good jobs.
I genuinely don't see if you go on his actual words, rather than making things up, ignoring inconvenient bits and making predictions, you could possibly have to moan about. Especially as you are supposedly an advocate for working class people.

Yes, I’m wondering if @Gloriia is deliberately posting nonsense about Andy Burnham’s experience as a way of getting people to post about his actual experience!

If not, her posts are spectacularly counterproductive.

I remember the avalanche on here and not many Labour supporters against it. Anyone posting not for Labour was generally attacked as a ‘bot’. Still happens at times.

I don’t think any Labour can take the moral high ground on wanting non policy rhetoric stopped. They created it and now Labour are in the spotlight.

Stop looking at it as a tribal issue. Don’t look at other people, consider your own actions. Your point is they did it so I can. My point is, I don’t like Tory policies but I won’t attack individuals on irrelevant issues like hair, height or accent.

Other people can behave how they want I think tribal politics is damaging and I won’t do it. You make your own decisions.

I am criticising him for even thinking about renationalisation. That is going to cripple the economy even more in my view. Where he is trying to save money for Consumers, they are going to be stung with high taxes to pay for the never ever ending demands for higher public sector wages.

He isn't experienced enough to be PM! There should be criteria that someone has to be a sitting MP for a year at least to do the job. It'd be like a junior from a local bank getting ceo of a hedge fund company, it would not happen in any other area.

Why are suggesting anyone has an issue with his accent, do you think Northern accents sound thick or something? Are you projecting?

'You're funny! Boris Johnson became Prime Minister after being Mayor of London'

I'm funny? BJ had been a sitting MP for ages, he's wasn't bused in on some flimsy forced by election. He was mayor 2008 - 2016 and became PM 2019. It's fine to have been head of councils in the past, obviously. My point is to be handed the top job imo should necessitate some current work experience in the area.

Andy Burnham was a sitting MP from 2001 to 2017. He was a government minister under Blair and Brown. He has much more parliamentary experience than Boris Johnson did when he became Prime Minister.

You still haven't explained why you called the Andy Burnham a 'local councillor' when he was Mayor of Manchester but you didn't call Boris Johnson a local councillor when he was Mayor of London.

Nearly ten years ago? Experience at MP level should be recent imo to be relevant.

Honestly I know folk who have worked at senior levels that to then progress have to jump through hoops, presentations assessment days it is endless. He was just given the job of Prime Minister. Absolutely batshit.

As you want. Bit late now to grandstand. This site shows how all in Labour were.

On Burnham it’s his economic policy I’m interested in, see taxes post below.

Again you’re wrong. He was an MP for 16 years from 2001 to 2017 and held various Cabinet positions.

That means he has more experience of being an MP before becoming a PM than 7 out of the 10 last PMs, with Major, Blair, Cameron, Johnson, Truss, Sunak and Starmer having had less experience, and only Thatcher, Brown and May having had more experience.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/07/2026 09:11

@Gloriia come come now. Don't you know you're only meant to massage Burnham's ego.

'You still haven't explained why you called the Andy Burnham a 'local councillor' when he was Mayor of Manchester but you didn't call Boris Johnson a local councillor when he was Mayor of London'

Burnham was currently a council boss, BJ had been in the past but had a recent and relevant senior MP role which obviously makes the difference. Hope that helps.

What next the commons work experience gets to be Speaker?

Nellodee · 18/07/2026 09:13

The rate at which we go through prime ministers in this country almost makes me envious of dictatorships. Give it a fucking rest and let someone have a few years at the job for a change.
