To be sick to death of Andy Burnham already

1000 replies

Viviennemary · 17/07/2026 20:57

I'm sick to death already of seeing Andy Burnham and hearing his voice. And he isnt even PM yet. Come back Keir Starmer. All is forgiven. I dont know how I'm going to suffer 3 or four more years of him in charge. Playing the part of the working class hero who is going to save the country. Give me strength.

The by election was fake. The MP stood aside specifically to let him in.

Mayor's are heads of local councils 'The mayor of Greater Manchester leads the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), which is formed of 10 local authorities'.

There should be outrage that someone can force a by election and get in by the back door like this. Doesn't bode well for his integrity does it.

Well.. no.

The reason for the by election was definitely motivated, and it was forced.

But the actual process of voting, counting and electing.. that’s all real.

He definitely was voted into Makerfield, for real, not fake.

I think calling the whole of GM just the one “local council” is a bit of a stretch. 😂

Nobody’s suggesting that he didn’t force that election so he could get to PM, or even that he’s an effective Mayor - I don’t live there, wouldn’t know.

But I also don’t think we need the hyperbole.

Bringemout · 18/07/2026 08:21

If you have to dig up thatchers corpse then I expect very little from you. I’ve developed a tic where I keep checking when the next GE is in the hopes it’s coming sooner, but nope….

But surely it's just basics supply and demand. We live semi rurally and when traffic comes to a standstill when crossings are down a 2 carriage train trundles passed with 2 people on. They're hardly going to have those running every 10 mins from 6am.

Regarding buses obviously they won't start running at 7am if there's only 1 person on it.

I guarantee if you live in Leeds or Newcastle (both Northern cities) public transport is plentiful.

It isn't so much North v South it's city v rural regarding public transport availability and cost.

The point is that the South is not just London and we can’t all just use the Tube. Yes, living rurally has an impact. But even when I get to a station (driving 25 minutes and paying £12 for parking), the train fair is £38 for a distance and time that is about the same as York to Leeds. That’s double the price of a York to Leeds ticket.

Erm...wrong. Not middle class and has had many a job outside politics. Research before you sound 'so sure'.

He is basically the definition of middle class and it is well known that he is a career politician.

KatiePricesKnickers · 18/07/2026 08:25

I’m sick of all the ‘hand over of power to Burnham’.
Let’s see what he does with all this power.

EmailsaysOOO · 18/07/2026 08:26

Bad luck OP. You're going to be hearing quite a bit more ok him

Gloriia · 18/07/2026 08:27

'But the actual process of voting, counting and electing.. that’s all real'z

Sorry yes I obviously didn't mean the count was fake rather the reason behind it all. Politics should be based on truth and integrity and pretending he wanted to be an MP of Makerfield was neither.

Gloriia · 18/07/2026 08:36

'You're funny! Boris Johnson became Prime Minister after being Mayor of London'

I'm funny? BJ had been a sitting MP for ages, he's wasn't bused in on some flimsy forced by election. He was mayor 2008 - 2016 and became PM 2019. It's fine to have been head of councils in the past, obviously. My point is to be handed the top job imo should necessitate some current work experience in the area.

But the rest of the country don't live their and are not so obsessed. Why should the majority of the country take less precedence. Tge wealth London makes doesn't affect the person in east Anglia who is a farm labourer or a ship worker in Chatham

Greenleavesandsunshine · 18/07/2026 08:38

This thread demonstrates the underlying issues with UK politics. AB is too middle class, he did the wrong degree, he’s an imposter, he has the wrong accent, he didn’t do everything in Manchester in 10 minutes. Ludicrous comments.
All this added to a profound lack of understanding of the nature of the uncodified Constitution, and the entrenched economic issues is just a disaster. I didn’t like Sunak’s policies but would never have criticised his accent, play the ball not the man. The entrenched economic issues are a result of numerous issues including Covid and the financial crisis but also austerity - Tory policy - and Brexit enabled by the Tories. But because you are feeling it now you seem unable to link you current issues to past events.
These attitudes are a toddler tantrum of I want it, I want it now, oh I’ve changed my mind it wasn’t the right one. Health political discourse is brilliant, this is not that.

Sunak had plenty of criticism that attacked non policy on here. It damaged his rating more than actual policies. Labour used whatever to get in and now they’re finding out the heat of that scrutiny.

One Labour PM ousted by MPs and now Andy Burnham is in the spotlight.

Yes it does.

Tax generated in London tax pays for services across the country.

LuckyHazelFox · 18/07/2026 08:46

Anyone would think it's only Labour MPs whose accents and degrees are discussed. It's only now Labour are back in, their voters are having a taste of the ridicule Tories were subjected to. Johnson's hair, clothes and personal life were always up for mocking. Even calling Truss' natural facial expressions as sneery was discussed. Labour voters don't like it back up em.

He isn't experienced enough to be PM! There should be criteria that someone has to be a sitting MP for a year at least to do the job. It'd be like a junior from a local bank getting ceo of a hedge fund company, it would not happen in any other area.

Why are suggesting anyone has an issue with his accent, do you think Northern accents sound thick or something? Are you projecting?

Yes it was all used by Labour and supporters. Well here we are with the second Labour PM. Maybe he’ll do a bit better than Starmer or perhaps the vibes will wear off to heavier taxes and 70s style reality.

Exactly, Liz the lettuce. Also Theresa May got absolutely mocked and ridiculed on here.

Some of us have great concerns that this very inexperienced man has been given the top job! These are valid concerns, I could not care less what his accent is like.

Edited

He's not "like a junior in a bank". He was Mayor of Manchester.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 18/07/2026 08:51

And people criticising Sunak for his accent or his height were wrong as well. See what I did there? I didn’t agree with his policies but would defend Sunak when people made facile comments about his ability based on the degree he did.
Liz Truss was an economic disaster but the fact she did PPE was not the reason she was a disaster, the way she became PM wasn’t the reason she was a disaster it was her policies.
You criticise policies when they have done something, not wang on about irrelevancies before they have done anything. And please, for the love of god, can we stop waving our ignorance about the U.K. constitution like it’s a badge of honour.

I don't understand how a local councillor can get the job of PM via a fake by election? A degree in English lit I believe doesn't seem ideal for the top job. What's he going to do quote a Midsummer Night's Dream at NATO meeetings?
I know he's had some political experience in the past but none very successful.

He seems a bit of an imposter. Yes his public speaking and body lagnauge are miles better then wet Starmer but surely they was a middle ground between Starmer and a local councillor albeit with the title of 'mayor'?!

Love him or hate him, he was never a local councillor for some ward, he was directly elected mayor for Greater Manchester, a region of nearly three million people!

That doesn’t autonomously mean he’s going to be a good PM of course, but what you wrote is just plain wrong.

Gloriia · 18/07/2026 08:54

He's a good public speaker I'll give him that. He doesn't look like he's about to burst into tears, that's good too. He looks comfortable. All skills thst would work well say in amateur dramatics. For PM you want someone experienced, an experienced MP. He is not.

He will pick up where Starmer left off in continuing to blame the Tories. Always looking backwards are Labour. If his bold entrance is about taking us back a few decades, it is going to make a proportion of people extremely happy and another very miserable. So Tories part 2. He's showing he is the antithesis of making something for everybody. No PM is capable of achieving that so it's all bluster.

No i didn't say he was like a junior in a bank. I said the situation was comparable to a junior in a bank being handed a ceo position. Would never happen.

If I'm being honest, the prospect of Burnham as PM is 100 times better than Khan. That would terrify me.

I am not a Tory but I have sympathy for Theresa May, she tried her best in difficult circumstances. She didn’t support Brexit but tried to do the right thing by the country. Just because other people made fun of her as a person and not her policies doesn’t mean it’s ok to do it.
Your argument is basically other people behaved badly so it’s ok for me to do it. That’s the politics of the playground. Do you want a grown up political system or do you like our dysfunctional, childish, game playing politics?
