I'm sick to death already of seeing Andy Burnham and hearing his voice. And he isnt even PM yet. Come back Keir Starmer. All is forgiven. I dont know how I'm going to suffer 3 or four more years of him in charge. Playing the part of the working class hero who is going to save the country. Give me strength.

The Labour party was elected on their 2024 manifesto. He needs to stick to it or to call a general election.

And most Labour back benchers have conveniently forgotten that they were elected because they had Starmer as leader and many centrist voters saw him as a safe pair of hands after the failure of the Conservatives.

Not forgetting the shit-show during Covid where they squandered £10 billion by giving PPE contracts to their rich mates who either failed to deliver anything or what they did deliver was sub-standard and cost money to be destroyed.

Sheer incompetence and cronyism that cost lives.

I live in Sussex. House prices here are higher than in some parts of London, and rents are comparable to those in many London boroughs.

Wages in most sectors are lower than London, so overall people have less disposable income than in other regions. And outside of the 2 biggest towns it's harder to access services, because of poor (and expensive) public transport.

There are two areas in East Sussex where deprivation levels were so high that they qualified for special funding from the EU to help regenerate them.

Everything that you have mentioned is the result of 14 years of incompetent and corrupt Tory government. It is a fact that NHS waiting lists have come down under Labour. Liz Truss crashed the economy before our very eyes and you want a return to that level of right-wing chaos.

As opposed to the chaos we've just witnessed in the Labour leadership. Angela Rayner as potential Health Secretary? Can't wait to see the new confirmed cabinet. Milliband as Chancellor? The man who wouldn't give an inch on his net zero budget. We are in the here and now - this isn't a Tory government.

Unless he has announced and funded a huge social housing building scheme in the next year or so, nothing will be changing with the housing situation.
And that policy isn’t going to win an election, and that’s all Labour will be thinking about.

The winners are going to be, as usual, the public sector. Money is going to be thrown at trade unions who will come back for more. Renationalising industries is going to compound that. More strikes, more tax on businesses. What a jolly few years this is going to be.

It does seem like he's being painted as the messiah by some people, which is always going to be impossible to live up to.

I for one am looking forward to seeing what happens when he interacts with Trump. I have a feeling it's going to produce some material for the US late night talk shows. Not that US politics is funny at the moment but the only way I can deal with it is finding things to laugh at. And Burnham and Trump should deliver on that front.

The first bus leaves my village at 9.30am but I keep reading comments from Northeners (not just on Mumsnet) that we all have amazing public transport. It’s a joke! I have to drive 25 minutes to a station, pay £12.00 for parking, and £38 for a return train ticket for a 30 minute journey but someone up the thread is convinced we are all just paying £6.00 for the Tube. Madness!

I don't understand how a local councillor can get the job of PM via a fake by election? A degree in English lit I believe doesn't seem ideal for the top job. What's he going to do quote a Midsummer Night's Dream at NATO meeetings?

He seems a bit of an imposter. Yes his public speaking and body lagnauge are miles better then wet Starmer but surely they was a middle ground between Starmer and a local councillor albeit with the title of 'mayor'?!

Mainly because he’s not a local councillor, the election was real (if not unnecessary), and he’s had more than “some” experience.

I think all of those are fairly universal facts, whether you like the guy or not.

But surely it's just basics supply and demand. We live semi rurally and when traffic comes to a standstill when crossings are down a 2 carriage train trundles passed with 2 people on. They're hardly going to have those running every 10 mins from 6am.

Regarding buses obviously they won't start running at 7am if there's only 1 person on it.

I guarantee if you live in Leeds or Newcastle (both Northern cities) public transport is plentiful.

It isn't so much North v South it's city v rural regarding public transport availability and cost.

You can go to a decent university, and get a decent job, without suddenly losing the upbringing you had.

The by election was fake. The MP stood aside specifically to let him in.

There should be outrage that someone can force a by election and get in by the back door like this. Doesn't bode well for his integrity does it.

You're funny! Boris Johnson became Prime Minister after being Mayor of London. Did you describe him as a 'local councillor'? Boris Johnson's degree was in Classics. How is that a more suitable degree for a UK Prime Minister than a degree in English Literature?

You are massively clutching at straws to show Burnham in a bad light before he has even been sworn in as Prime Minister.

One thing that is very clear is that Burnham's moral compass is much better than that of any Conservative Prime Minister. He isn't a corrupt adulterer like Boris Johnson and he stood up for Manchester during the pandemic instead of attending lock-down parties at Number 10 like Boris and allowing their Tory mates to profit from the pandemic by producing unusable PPE that cost the economy over £10 billion.
