Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

Engerlund · 13/07/2026 18:49

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

To add to this, earlier this year there was a huge issue with a tourist from Argentina visiting Brasil and behaving in a racist way. They were arrested, dealt with, and the vast majority of people in Argentina were disgusted by the behaviour and how it reflected on them.

A couple of weeks ago, the Brasilian press was heavily reporting on a Spanish woman who was arrested at Guarulhos (Sao Paulo) airport for using racially abusive language. She is now also being dealt with by the authorities. Again, totally unacceptable.

As I have said, based on my experience, living in Argentina as an immigrant has been far easier than Spain. I am white, my husband is black.

Both socieities have their problem, but to try and claim one is superior to the other on this is completely false.

I don't think the society as a whole is inferior.

I think the men making racist chants were racist. Those men included men on the Argentinian team.
I am sure your neighbours are lovely people and I'm happy for you. However, unless there is a huge drip feed coming, they weren't on the Argentinian football team so have little bearing on whether or not the men on the Argentinian football team were racist.

The level of mental gymnastics/straw men/whataboutery to deny the racism of those individuals is quite disturbing. I would hope English fans wouldn't do the same if it was Kane saying the same things but to be honest I don't know because people can get very tribal.

About Sturgeon? I wasn't saying the careers of Sturgeon and Farage were the exact same. I meant they both allegedly used and exacerbated strong feelings/dissatisfaction with the Westminster politics and perceived "elites" to their own personal advantage/enrichment. Rather than only caring about the causes they made their names on. And that both have fans who can't separate the cause from the personalities leading to an excess of loyalty.

But it's all alleged so who knows really.

She lives in London now because Scotland is a "goldfish bowl" because of public scrutiny about her finances. She cares as much about you as Farage cares about the people of Clacton.

I genuinely don't care (and I don't mean that in a rude or dismissive way) who you support on Sunday.

I hope you have a great day, maybe cook some tapas, and have fun. It's a football match. I am going to be drinking malbec, probably having some empanadas and enjoying the atmosphere.

I am just trying to make the point that people are making very strong assertations about Argentina and these aren't rooted in reality, or my lived experience - having spent extensive time in both countries.

Both have their problems, and as I have said and neither should feel superior to the other. All I can say is after the racist abuse I had to live next to in Spain, as well as a number of other issues as an immigrant, living in Argentina has been a dream in comparison.

That's because you're not understanding that champions will do everything they can to win.

England are not a great side, they've been lucky in the matches they've had.

They're a good side, but not great.

Thee team seem a nice bunch of lads, but the stupid insistence by the fans that they're brilliant gets on my wick.

Going on about 1966. That stupid Three Lions song (not even the best football song, that'll be World In Motion).
Pathetic loser mentality to be going on about something that occurred 60 years ago.
You'd have to be at least 65 to remember '66, anyway.
I hope that song gets put to bed now, 64 years of hurt doesn't have the same ring to it.

If you only had a few minutes to learn the very basics about football before the match any reasonably intelligent person could work out that the team in white were just defending their lead after their one goal up and the team in blue were doing their best to put that ball in that net.

What are you on about- the first half is as I described, it's boring watching fouls it's not good sportsmanship and it's not one on merit.

I agree with you about the defence but you are completely wrong about the quality of play by the England team. I've followed a London club since I was about 7, I'm mid 40s now, please don't patronise me!

In fairness, while I think the referee was a bit biased and the fouls by some of the players blatant, I don't think that's why England lost. I think Argentina won because they played a better game on the night. I actually think Egypt have a stronger case to feel robbed TBF.
But because they were favoured in various matches, that is the story people will have about them even if they win the finals. So it will be tainted, even if unfairly.

As a Scot yourself, would you agree that as a nation we’re not racist because we’re too busy being sectarian? Plus Unionists vs Independence supporters?

There’s a cracking video of a young Scottish man explaining it all. It’s so funny.

But, we don’t really have the energy to “hate” English people or bame people as we’re too involved in arguing with each other.

The Scots "not being racist" thing is a myth, and I really wish other Scots would stop perpetuating it because it isn't true.

The reason Scotland doesn't have racial tensions in the same way as other parts of the UK, or hasn't seen race riots in relatively recent history, is purely and simply down to the fact Scotland doesn't have the ethnic diaspora of other parts of the UK.

As you correctly state, if you want a true picture of who Scots are, you can look at the minority who revel in Sectarian nonsense, or the fact that we're every bit as quick to decry "neds" and social underclasses as anyone else.

Scotland does not appear to be an inherently racist country when you look at things from inside Scotland itself, because our prejudices and our distaste is aimed at people and groups for reasons other than their race. There are still plenty of bampots running around though with views which belong in the dark ages, and as much as it pains me to admit it, since the rise of Tommy Robinson, Farage, Restore UK etc, I am encountering a good few more Scots who are buying into that shite. As I said, bampots, the sort who shout about "stopping the boats" on the streets of Falkirk. Presumably the "boats" are coming up the River Carron and then onto the canal or something.

From travelling all over the country. Northerners are fairly friendly tbf, but in the South, especially the south east, people will often glare if they meet your eye.

It's called life experience and the vibes people give off. Certain nationalities are known to be more friendly. It doesn't mean there aren't many arseholes amongst them, there still are, but certain nationalities have friendlier dispositions than others.

Don't go to Copenhagen will you! Southerners don't have a nationality that is different to Northerners.

Oh I'm well aware that many Nordic countries prefer to keep to themselves. I was replying to a poster who was saying that Scots are dour, when in fact many Scots are far more welcoming and friendly than many English people.

Freinddilemma · Today 16:02

The day Scotland can lecture us on diversity is the day they have anything even remotely resembling Bradford. Or Birmingham. Or Slough. Or Manchester. Or the entirety of London. Or....you get the picture.

Its easy as fuck to consider yourselves non racist when you have under 200 people per square mile. We in England have over a thousand. You sit there in splendid isolation preaching tolerance. We actually live it in our day to day experience, navigating patchworks of communities with conflicting priorities and interests not just in our cities but in our market towns.

Call us when you actually find yourselves competing for resources. I predict this will be around 2050, in light of rising temperature levels and population growth.

There are a very small, very organised number of people concertedly spreading
Far-Right hate across the central belt in Scotland right now. It's only just starting to hit the news, but it's been going on for a couple of years at least, and the concerning thing about it is that these people struggle to tie their own shoelaces, so anything they organise tends to quickly fall apart due to infighting and recriminations, but this is not.

It stinks to high-heaven of something being actively funded by people or groups who are actually far more sinister than the morons fronting it, and it's a little bit concerning to say the least.

See also "the NHS is so bad in England!!!" Well, yes. Im not surprised your NHS runs smoothly. Its serving the equivalent of less than the entire population of London

This doesn't really track when Wales is even smaller than Scotland, and the Welsh NHS is one of the worst performing of the lot.

How many Welsh Health Boards and Trusts have been in Special Measures for years on end now?
