Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

Engerlund · 13/07/2026 18:49

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

The Scots are really sore losers. Imagine an actor who is only doing local amateur theatre.

And then they sit and watch the Oscars, where somebody they know has been nominated as best actress. They then scoff and slag them off and are overjoyed when they don’t win the prize.

That’s the Scottish.

Sore losers? Every video was the Scottish fans partying with the opposition fans even after they lost, didn’t see that with England fans after Argentina game

Really? I just see Scottish people having a laugh and being light hearted. Are you missing the posts about how we’re a drain to the uk? Did you miss the one about england giving us money? What about the ones saying how shit we are and now yours about us having no self belief! Scottish people have faced years of being spoken about badly by English media and politicians. There are loads of videos of English fans singing songs against Scottish, is that not just banter?
For most Scottish supporting any one but England it is really not that deep, it’s a shame you are so affected by it as I really wouldn’t give a shit if England supported us

This thread is full of people saying we don't matter and they're not bothered and we're just shite and jealous and they pay for us (them!) etc etc.

Even had Nicola likened to Farage of all people.

Yet here they are - bothering. 😂

Exactly, this thread should give the OP a really good sense of why many Scottish would not support England. There is a constant sense of superiority. That poster talking about Scottish moving down south and yet you go to Dumfries and the Highllands and there’s so many English living there. Crazy a football game affects them this much, I can honestly say if Scotland in an alternative universe got to the World Cup semis I would really not care about England fans supporting the other team. I suppose it must be harder if you’re mixed buy Jeeso it’s not that deep

I know! I honestly think they hate the fact that the Tartan Army are liked world wide and wherever we go we end up with a "twin" town/city.

They can't take it. For a nation known for their arrogance, that arrogance seems to stem from a feeling of inferiority, otherwise they wouldn't give a flying one what anyone else thinks.

We don't!

It's not Sturgeon moving down South

It's the fact that the sensible pro-indepandancw movement people spent a lot of energy arguing against the idea that the pro-indepnlendance movement was "anti-English". You had people explain why this was incorrect in this thread and I do agree the English press could be unfair in this regard.

But then you also get parts of the SNP completely undermining this with "Brave heart" nonsense and politicians themselves politicising football matches (I think the SNP getting in on ABE is completely different to Scottish people doing it when indeed it usually is just bangs). Sturgeon absolutely played into this and some of the rhetoric in the lead up to the vote made even some pro-independance people uncomfortable. It was similar to how logical arguments about Brexit (I was against it) played second fiddle to super charged jingoistic nonsense and yammering about 1066 and WW2.

To the extent the Sturgeon dancing gif is used as banter when the UK lost. I bantered back that she was in England now and you lost it. You have one poster arguing that the independence movement is bigger than one person and noone is idolising Sturgeon and another poster furious at the idea she could have been involved in stealing money etc. The fact is she specifically said she was moving to London because she found Scotland a goldfish bowl after she came under scrutiny for benefitting from her partner's continued massive theft.

There is a similarity between the way Sturgeon courted a parasocial fanbase** based on personal appeals to grievance and the way Farage created a parasocial fanbase. To the extent that any criticism of them is accused of being criticism of the people who voted for them/of the movement itself. I naturally have more sympathy for the Scottish Independence movement than Brexit, but it's still a toxic trend in politics regardless of whether the movement is good/bad. The inability to see the similarities and the outrage when they are pointed out sort of proves my point. And yes, the people insulting Scotland on this thread are playing the same game from a different direction.

**Not all people who vote SNP, support Scottish independence or even liked Sturgeon.

None of which has anything to do with football. Until posters made it about football

We don't!

But if the BBC are so biased towards England, and so determined to present Scotland in a poor light, or not talk about them at all then why did they report the Tartan army stuff so extensively and so positively? If the English are so hateful and jealous of the trend why did the England centric BBC report on it more than any other news source?. Can't you see how you contradict yourself? Pick one complaint and stick to it.

I completely agree some English people are twats by the way.

You already found out I'm a data manager. So as you already said I know NOTHING about Scotland based on my job. Where I live and have lived is pretty irrelevant in the face of such damning evidence.

Just to say. I have never mentioned the BBC and have no idea why you think I have. Plus, I will post as many complaints as I want to. Who do you think you are? But they will never be as long winded as yours.

Just put of interest how do you figure out if someone is English living in Dumfries etc? Is it accent alone? Skin colour? Long conversations with them?

Hearing accents when I visit mostly. According to stats 18,000 English live in Dumfries and 26,000 in the Highlands

I think you need to move on from this thread. There’s far more to life than wondering who a different nation supports. It’s over with now and really not that big a deal

It doesn't take a genius to work out why. That goading banner wasn't just for the benefit of the English. It was a poke in the eye for Britain. Simon Weston would be able to enlighten you on the facts of the Falklands where many died including over 40 Scots.
Spain didn't party with them either seeing as the miserable Argies turned their backs when Spain collected the trophy.

Also, quite a lot of the fans** were unpleasant if you looked at the scenes as people left the stadium. English fans were being jeered at by Argentinian fans, including in many cases racial abuse. There were also scenes of lone English fans (not necessarily English, just wearing England shirts) being surrounded by Argentinians trying to goad them into a fight. It wasn't really a "celebrate with the other fans" sort of atmosphere
I don't think you need to support England. But it does feel quite ignorant to see a video of (for example) a group of people screaming at someone, making monkey noises or throwing drinks at them and asking "why doesn't he want to celebrate with them" or "wow English fans must be really annoying to get that reaction". Get a clue.

**Not all. And I am sure there were more positive scenes not captured on camera.

Some people don't get it or are being deliberately obtuse just to make a stupid point.
