Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

Engerlund · 13/07/2026 18:49

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

I live in England and there's plenty where I live who are work shy.

All my Scottish friends work.

There was a nice bit of schadenfreude seeing England out done in the diving, haranguing the ref and feigning injury stakes today.
But fuck me Argentina never should have had a chance to even be near them if it wasn't for tuchel.

Hard to think of a more cowardly exit from a manager of a top tier team. Southgate got grief but he was barely cautious, Tuchel absolutely fucked England tonight, no winner Kane called him out immediately afterwards (although he might be distracting from his own performance)

I don't think you understand how jokes work @lovecotswoldsliving !

You certainly don’t

I was at a show so did not watch it. Sad end to England’s tournament but to make it to the final 4 of 48 is no easy feat.

Well done lads!

JHound · Today 00:59

I don’t feel strongly for Spain but given the huge Argentinian problem with racism and a rapist mentality I hope Spain lifts the trophy come Sunday.

She can live where she wants
But it's the same issue with Farage who, when he has eventually fleeced the UK for as much money as he can get, will no doubt remove himself to America or Dubai or similar. Or possibly even Europe. No doubt the people that support him will continue to. I don't have an issue with people having a different opinion on the EU/immigration to me. But the Farage fans who openly celebrate someone who sees them as an easy mark for cash (and then continue to be baffled and resentful that they have less money than they should) are fools. Draw any similarities you want from that.

I don’t think Farage will move to a country he hates though.

No, but he will marry a "foreigner" after he makes a living complaining about them, and in particular the Germans. No idea why Sturgeon is in London. But Scotland and the independence movement is far bigger than her. It would be like judging the union, and England solely on Starmer or Boris Johnson and where they live or what they do or say. Just because they're staunch unionists. No one politician is big enough to represent the independence movement, or the union.

And as you said in a previous comment. Come on, Spain. We can all agree on that, at least

Not for me.
I'm absolutely impressed by how Argentina bounced back.
Though Tuchel's substitutions helped them enormously.

The England goal scorer Gordon will be no doubt remembered by serious fans, but he'll go from hero to forgotten in the space of a match by most.

Spain have great finesse with their controlled passing, I didn't see that demonstrated by the Ar last night

The Independence movement is different to Sturgeon and indeed bigger than her.
But, I would assume she is in London partly because it's a genuinely great place to live and also because she fears push back for the money she may or may not have fleeced. Views on independence (and football teams) aside people that still celebrate her because it's a smart way to to own the Libs lefty elite English aren't as unique as they think.

BTW I don't think Farage will move to a country he hates either. I don't think he hates the EU though. I think he was quite happy to tap into the petty grudges and parasocial tendancies of the less intelligent than him to enrich himself. Hence he still claims an EU pension etc. Same but different but also the same.

I'm not saying that they will beat Spain, only that I'm impressed that they demonstrated true champion spirit and bounced back.

It's not so much that Gordon will be forgotten, more his goal will be overshadowed by the fact England lost.

He makes a living complaining about unmanaged immigration. Not foreigners existing. Just as how many civil rights activists fought long and hard against white supremacy whilst marrying white people and strident feminists who talk at length about men’s misogyny and sexism have male partners.

I don’t think having a foreign partner means you are no longer allowed any views on immigration, numbers and also preferred sources of immigration. There is much, (much much much much much MUCH) to criticise Farage for (and I do think he weaponises people’s fears). But him having married a German woman isn’t one of them.

I would love to see Messi end his incredible career lifting that trophy. He appears to be a really nice guy, does a lot of charity work aimed at children. He deserves it.

Scots always support anyone but England, despite all the money we’ve given them over the years (I remember reading it was about a 10% uplift per taxpayer back when they had the independence referendum.)

In return, we think they are dour and have midges.

You say the Scots are dour, but the average Scot is far more friendly and welcoming than the average English person. Especially, much more friendly than southerners.

Lots of fouls the first half - every 4 minutes, I wouldn't call that champion material!

I prefer to watch the sportsmanship that was shown in the Norwegian/England game, that is good football.

They don’t. It’s in their heads.
Delusional. They keep saying it to try and convince themselves it’s true.

That's because you're not understanding that champions will do everything they can to win.

England are not a great side, they've been lucky in the matches they've had.

They're a good side, but not great.

Thee team seem a nice bunch of lads, but the stupid insistence by the fans that they're brilliant gets on my wick.

Going on about 1966. That stupid Three Lions song (not even the best football song, that'll be World In Motion).
Pathetic loser mentality to be going on about something that occurred 60 years ago.
You'd have to be at least 65 to remember '66, anyway.
I hope that song gets put to bed now, 64 years of hurt doesn't have the same ring to it.

If you only had a few minutes to learn the very basics about football before the match any reasonably intelligent person could work out that the team in white were just defending their lead after their one goal up and the team in blue were doing their best to put that ball in that net.

From travelling all over the country. Northerners are fairly friendly tbf, but in the South, especially the south east, people will often glare if they meet your eye.

It's called life experience and the vibes people give off. Certain nationalities are known to be more friendly. It doesn't mean there aren't many arseholes amongst them, there still are, but certain nationalities have friendlier dispositions than others.
