Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

Engerlund · 13/07/2026 18:49

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

Am shocked at the homemade banner held up by Argentinian players.

I thought people were punished for political demonstrations?

Anyway this is what I mean by Argentina’s rapist mentality. They refuse to respect the right of a people to self-determination.

Engerlund · Today 10:31

@JHound surely something will be done about it?

Can't keep blaming managers. They're not the ones on the pitch making bad judgements or performing poorly.

edit - playing blaming

Edited

When you change things to have six defenders on the pitch and take off the lad who scored your only goal, that sends one message … you’re defending a one-goal lead against a fantastic attacking team and giving the best player in the world loads of time on the ball. All with 30 minutes left on the clock.
That defeat lies squarely on the manager.

Totally agree. People in the pub were all saying the same thing when it happened. Madness.

FIFA is very inconsistent with which political acts they punish, so I doubt it.

mumumental · Today 11:11

Ugh! The BBC are using the language of the Sun, with their headline “Agony for England fans”. How ridiculous.

Dreameasy · Today 11:14

Freinddilemma · Today 07:41

How could you possibly know that 😂

Did you miss the coverage of both sets of supporters when they were in Boston?

The Scots in Boston thing is gonna end up as wearisome as the It's coming home thing.

There was lots of coverage with lots of supporters. I dunno how the small amount of coverage you saw is enough to make a definitive conclusion of how friendly entire nations are!

Yeah because some random mostly male football fans who've agreed to stop for an interview are a totally fair and varied representation of 2 entire fucking populations 😂😂

I thought the story about the Scots in Boston was lovely (that sounds patronising) and it was a good, heartwarming, feel good story that was heavily pushed. But it goes back to my earlier point that someone was complaining the BBC never reported on Scottish fans just the English. When there is heaps of coverage (I counted at least 7 articles on the BBC) bigging up Scottish fans however, that isn't taken as a reason not to be resentful at the media. Instead it's proof that the Scottish are better than the English and somehow added to the resentment bank.
It's not a particularly Scottish trait. There are people in the UK and other countries who do this too but it's not a happy way to live.

allthiscarryon · Today 11:51

I bet the Scots ( and Irish and Welsh) are happy this morning!
trying to defend a single goal lead against Argentina?? Who have Messi amongst others? That was madness.

Inverness1900 · Today 12:33

QuintadosMalvados · Today 06:46

Not for me.
I'm absolutely impressed by how Argentina bounced back.
Though Tuchel's substitutions helped them enormously.

The England goal scorer Gordon will be no doubt remembered by serious fans, but he'll go from hero to forgotten in the space of a match by most.

That's fair enough. I've never liked how people try to police people's support. If you support Argentina, go for it. They played well at the end of the day, and they sent the three lions home.

The Independence movement is different to Sturgeon and indeed bigger than her.
But, I would assume she is in London partly because it's a genuinely great place to live and also because she fears push back for the money she may or may not have fleeced. Views on independence (and football teams) aside people that still celebrate her because it's a smart way to to own the Libs lefty elite English aren't as unique as they think.

BTW I don't think Farage will move to a country he hates either. I don't think he hates the EU though. I think he was quite happy to tap into the petty grudges and parasocial tendancies of the less intelligent than him to enrich himself. Hence he still claims an EU pension etc. Same but different but also the same.

But, I would assume she is in London partly because it's a genuinely great place to live and also because she fears push back for the money she may or may not have fleeced.

Yeah, and I also know she doesn't hate England. Well, I don't "know", but if she's anything like a typical independence supporter, it's never been about hating another country, it's about being pro-Scotland. Taking back the reins and being a full nation again, instead of just a cog in the wheel of a union.

Though I do get a bit frustrated and annoyed when our support for independence for Scotland, is twisted by opponents into hating the English. It wears a bit thin.

But it's how it looks... not good. Her political career has been about fighting for our country's independence against the London elite, and now she's down there dining with them, or at least that's how it will look to her critics.

If she'd have gone to Paris or something, it would have been different. Anyway, she's not really relevant anymore to the political side of things.

He makes a living complaining about unmanaged immigration. Not foreigners existing. Just as how many civil rights activists fought long and hard against white supremacy whilst marrying white people and strident feminists who talk at length about men’s misogyny and sexism have male partners.

I don’t think having a foreign partner means you are no longer allowed any views on immigration, numbers and also preferred sources of immigration. There is much, (much much much much much MUCH) to criticise Farage for (and I do think he weaponises people’s fears). But him having married a German woman isn’t one of them.

I'm not sure I agree with the first part. I think he's been hypocritical, he's taking an extreme position on a lot of issues, and sucked up to the clown in the Washington circus. There's better and more honest ways to discuss immigration figures. Which I personally agree have been much too high, and for much too long.

But that's for another discussion.

Sweaty?? WTF 😂

Sweaty sock = Jock. My Scottish partner gets called this in the local. He retaliates with a jibe about Morris Dancers and their bells and silly dancing. 😜

Why who has?

Have you forgotten again?

Being Scottish, and Scottish Independence is actually all about England.

Quite enjoying the typical Unionist nonsense of banging on endlessly about how the UK is a "country", we all share it, there is no difference between us etc, then piping up with "UK woman moves to another part of the UK, what an outrage!!!!"

Used to self-describe as a "porridge wog", because that's usually used in genuine jest and it does at least display a degree of imagination.

It seems to be a national pastime making everything about people "hating" them. Never heard a peep about Indy from the Welsh or the Northern Irish except support!

Inverness1900 · Today 12:53

Leapintothelightning · Today 09:21

Yep. Can’t remember exactly what was said but I seem to remember it being something like “we don’t want the sweatys supporting us anyway”

You're right. It's a common English "slur" and I use that term loosely, because I'm not sure how they intend it (could be serious, could just be good natured teasing).

But "sweaty socks", because it rhythms with "Jock", has long been a common name the English have for us. No idea where they get "sweaty" from, because we're all supposed to be bitter, and on benefits, and it's cold up here. When do we have time to sweat? 😁

I doubt people will be talking about Scots in Boston, in 2086.
Nor should they be. Scots over there had a good time, supporting their team, donated some money to a children's hospital, drank lots of beer, and watched the team get kicked out. End of story. Now it's time to focus on the Euros and the 2030 WC.

Oh yes how many more times are we going to hear that the Scots donated 10k to a charity?
Just so you know, out PTA raised 16k at our village school fete this past week….

Do you miss her?

I liked her as a leader and she won us some huge election victories, so I miss that. But I have been supporting independence since I was a wee bairn, long before the SNP started having success, electorally. So I've been around long enough to know it's much bigger than her, or Salmond, or any individual. It's about all of us.
