Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

Go Argentina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't wait for the final! The atmosphere in Buenos Aires will be amazing! Beating England was just the icing on the cake!!!!!!

Tuchel completely fucked it for England with his tactics. Those players deserved better.

I don't think anyone should have to support a team they don't want to. Those vox pops where people go up to Scottish/Irish people and ask them "will you be supporting England" are weird.

But, the idea that the UK media is arrogant in regards the English team winning is a bit strange. They do bang on about it, but I think the UK press are way more negative about the team and individual players than other countries. On the run up to each game it's doom and gloom, if England loses the players are traditionally castigated for throwing it away and if they win the papers call it a "lucky escape". Unless and until they win the whole thing and then the Sun etc will have been "with them all the way".

Some of its not wanting to get hopes up because it always hurts. But I also think the endless negativity/attempts to shit stir (see the drama kicked up about Tuchel and Bellinghams comments) aren't helpful especially when targeted towards a bunch of men in their teens and early twenties.

I am biased because I would be supporting England only. But I do find the current English team more likeable, as individuals, than the Argentinian team. So I think even if I wasn't English I would want them to win.

We’ll have to agree to disagree about the media.

I understand what you mean with regards to tearing down players if they don’t meet expectations. But there is a significant arrogance among the media nonetheless. Maybe you don’t notice it because of your perspective, but the fact that lots of non-English people do suggests to me it’s not a view unique to me. It is so common for the commentators to bang on about England and matters relating to the team, even when the match they are covering is not involving England. Happens during 6 nations/rugby World Cup too, for instance. It’s annoying- the assumption that obviously everyone watching really wants to concentrate on England at all times. And often the attitude that the English team are going to walk it, barely need to do more than turn up. It sometimes seems a bit disrespectful if I’m honest.

And the crowing from the media when you do well usually goes well beyond simply being ecstatic that your team has won (which is totally understandable). Again, I say it is not jealousy- in most sports we accept we’re the determined underdog who will try valiantly with variable degrees of success.

Fair play to Argentina. They’re smug and irritating, but are real scrappers with no small measure of skill. I’m sad to go out but good luck to them on Sunday, although I fear Spain will turn them over fairly easily.

Yes I agree definitely deserved the win.

It was like 2 different games at each half.

At least we were happy for a short while 🤣

Was it crowing when the media talked about belle and Sebastian writing a new song for Scotland's World Cup? Or when the UK media including the BBC reported very extensively on Scotland's positive reception in Boston? (One of many articles here https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c0my8z7vpg3o )

The reporting on Scotland by the BBC and other media was pretty much exclusively positive. There was celebration that they had qualified and talk of how happy Scots were. There was a focus on the Scottish reception in America. Once Scotland was knocked out the BBC stopped reporting on them and focused on England.
It just seems that when there is positive reporting on Scotland that isn't read (by some) as the media talking about Scotland but "we are SO much better than English fans", when there's positive reporting on England it's "why are the media bigging them up".
I'm part Scottish, but I also have family members with Scottish sounding names who have those names because they were owned and maltreated and probably raped by Scottish men. Only a few generations back. Although I think that history should be remembered and learnt from, I don't think it's a reason to hate Scottish people in the here and now. But Scottish people will talk about something that happened 800 years ago as a reason to feel bitter. How bitter should people in Jamaica be towards the Tartan Army then?

And the Scots can save their hard earned cash and stop buying footy shirts.

I have no voice left. Luckily most in the pub were going mental too.

She can live where she wants
But it's the same issue with Farage who, when he has eventually fleeced the UK for as much money as he can get, will no doubt remove himself to America or Dubai or similar. Or possibly even Europe. No doubt the people that support him will continue to. I don't have an issue with people having a different opinion on the EU/immigration to me. But the Farage fans who openly celebrate someone who sees them as an easy mark for cash (and then continue to be baffled and resentful that they have less money than they should) are fools. Draw any similarities you want from that.

Can't keep blaming managers. They're not the ones on the pitch making bad judgements or performing poorly.

Who do you blame for Scotland playing so badly?

Inverness1900 · Yesterday 23:06

Engerlund · Yesterday 23:03

All the Scots i know work to be fair.

I've no idea why we Scots have the stereotype of being out of work, by some English people. I mean, we do have issues with alcohol and drug dependency, like most of the west, and maybe slightly more than the UK average. But it's not the case with unemployment.

For instance, in the first quarter of 2026, the unemployment rate in the United Kingdom was highest in England, where it was 5.2 percent, followed by Wales at 4.4 percent, Scotland at 3.6 percent, and 2.1 percent in Northern Ireland.
