Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

Engerlund · 13/07/2026 18:49

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

Yabvu. People can support who they want. Am Irish, id have supported Scotland all the way! Am supporting Spain, Argentina now!

Daysgo · 15/07/2026 17:38

I've no idea why you have decided Scots should support England... V v strange

I'm not pro-Argentina having the Falklands, I am pro-not giving a f**k.

I don't care about some land thousands of miles away. At least not to wanting control over it. If there was some humanitarian disaster, I'd care about the suffering. But I see it as nothing to do with me.

"Also all countries and territories arise from people “laying claim” to them."

Unless it's the land I live, I don't care. If you're pro-empire and pro- imperialist. That's your prerogative. I believe the land people live on should be in their control. Scotland should be in control of its own country, and that's where my energy lies, in fighting to regain our autonomy. I don't care about some land thousands of miles across the ocean.

As for supporting the England team. Let's face it, if this was French people, or Brazilian people cheering against the England team, no one in England would give it much thought. But I think a lot of people in England don't respect Scotland and Wales as their own countries. There should be no more expectation for a Scot to support the England team, than there is for a Polish person to.

I am pro ensuring facts are correct and a country’s people deciding what they wish for themselves.

It’s just hardly “imperialist” for a territory to belong to a foreign power when that is what the inhabitants want.

Also don’t count me in with those who care who cheers against England. I don’t much care. I don’t support the Scottish team either (I don’t cheer on their opponents I just don’t care about them and have other teams I prefer such as France, Norway or any underdog teams.)

That's not been my experience, and I have cousins who have lived there their whole lives. Cricket and rugby more so than football, because they don't take the latter as seriously. But with Aussies who do take football seriously, many of them are also ABE.

Maybe your cousins are just salty too

Well our experience has been quite different then hasn’t it.

Imagine that, Australians are not a monolith.

As am I. But if some stranger across from the world turned up at my door tomorrow telling me they wanted to live with me, I'd say, sorry, but I have my own issues to deal with, I can't afford to take care of you too.

"It’s just hardly “imperialist” for a territory to belong to a foreign power when that is what the inhabitants want."

I don't agree. For me, it's not about whatever the people in that territory want, which they could want for many reasons, but the land thousands of miles away, thinking it's a good idea to be in control of them.

This is the sort of reasoning that is, and has been used to defend all sorts of invasion of territories, and defence of empire building.

The Russians claim the Ukraine want to be under Russian control too. I don't think it's ever right for any governing body that's not on that land, to be in control of the land.

What does that have to do with the Falklands?

So you don’t agree with self-determination.

By the tone of your posts you seem not to know much about the Falkland Islands or its history so it’s weird you have such assertive views on it. You think England caused the Falkland war, you think ownership of the Falklands is Britain dictating to the Falklands they will be in charge of them, you think the situation with the Falklands is similar to Russia / Ukraine which shows wild ignorance of history (Russian invaded a nation to exert its will over its people. That is not the history the Falklands.)

…you should maybe stick to Football.

I mean, you can deny it's not a common sentiment, if you want. But it very much is. The point is, it's common not just in Scotland, or Inverness, as originally implied.

I never implied my cousins took one stance or the other, only that I have cousins there who relayed the information to me.

It's really not the same. The residents resisted strongly when Argentina invaded, insisted on driving on the left when there was an attempt to force them to drive on the right. They really do want to be British.

They actually have strong links with the North Yorkshire town where I grew up.

There haven’t even been any Argentinians wanting to settle there, curiously enough.

You keep mentioning they want to be British. But they're not British, they're on the other side of the world. Britain is an island. The UK is a political union. it's territory claimed from the days of the empire.

No there are loads of ABE. There are loads of AB<insert country here>.

There are also loads of non-English England supporters too. Which was my point. The other PPs claim that only people from England support England is incorrect.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 15/07/2026 17:55

It's really nice when Scottish/Welsh/N.Irish people are generous enough to support England. I would certainly always support other UK teams. I regard them as neighbours and friends.

But ultimately, people can support whoever they like. It makes no difference to the performance of the England team or to my enjoyment of the match.

The somewhat obsessive desire amongst some Scottish people to see England lose just smacks of petty jealousy tbh. It doesn't reflect well on the people who adopt this attitude as it makes them look a bit pathetic, but it doesn't actually do anyone any harm. Leave them to their petty insecurities, I say, and let them enjoy their schadenfreude if England gets knocked out tonight. At least someone will be happy about it.

And if by some miracle we get through to the final, then they can stew in the soup of their own bitterness and resentment.🤣

I wasn’t much bothered with the WC when Scotland got put out but seeing the sheer xenophobia on here about us, I‘m supporting Argentina 🇦🇷

They are a territory of Britain which is what they want. Just as Martinique and Guadeloupe are France and Puerto Rico is part of the USA.

Self-determination means respecting those expressed wishes but you have already said you don’t agree with self determination. You keep mentioning distance but that’s irrelevant.

But as I have said your comments make clear your historical knowledge of the Falklands is woeful.

I don’t understand objecting to xenophobia but then supporting this: https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/jul/16/fff-legal-complaint-racist-argentina-chants-copa-america

But I shall drink my water and mind my business.

Just spotted your post as i had just posted a good luck England tonight from Scotland. It is absolutely pathetic the people who would rather Argentina win instead of our brothers in arms England. Your right this goes beyond the banter of Scottish humour.

They actually are British, and have strong links with Yorkshire as I said. I would agree that historically the Falkland Islands shouldn't have become British, but they did and the people who live there want it to remain that way.

I see the Argentinians have been burning British flags in the streets. What a waste.

I don’t even know why historically they should never have become British. I would certainly feel differently if they were inhabited though.
