Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

I am Scottish and live in Buenos Aires, so I'm afraid I will be very passionately supporting Argentina!!

The excitement here for matches is infectious - I've never been into football much but it's hard to ignore it.

I have always supported them on the Las Malvinas (Falklands) issue, which is the main cause of friction for them with England - and in my opinion, understandably so.

Argentina laying claim to the Falklands, which have been British since before Argentina existed (and whose inhabitants wish to remain British) really isn’t understandable at all.

From my very limited knowledge of football (gained over the past few weeks 🤣) it seems like the only people who support England are English people.

Everyone else in the world is Anyone But England so I don't think you're going to have much luck OP.

My Danish relatives would disagree with you.

Certainly limited knowledge. This isn’t my experience at all. It appears very mixed.

I don't give a second thought to a piece of territory we claimed half way across the world. It's a lingering ember of a dead empire. And the empire is nothing to be proud of.

You do realise that the residents of the Falklands have been British for a very long time and wish to remain so? Do their views count for nothing?

I would agree with you absolutely if it wasn't for the views of the long-term residents.

Eh-'lacklustre Divas'?? I blame that shocking oxymoron on your feverish hate for the England team, your thoughts are on one thing only -the hate!

I don't hate the English team.

Life is too short to waste time on hating a football team.

I am not Scottish either.

I just want to see football players who enjoy themselves on the pitch, don't blame everyone else if they don't play well and who just give a good show.

And I think anyone has the right to choose to support a team/teams without feeling an obligation to support the England team.

Frankly after reading the posts of this thread though I can understand why some people hope Argentina wins...

Jhm88 · 15/07/2026 15:32

Apparently England are the only ones who would "go on about it" if they win. Scotland would just be quiet if it was them. 🙄

Anyway, ITS COMING HOME!!

I think you misunderstand my factual observations as rude. Also, I get the impression you have had a different cultural upbringing to me where all this flowery, passive aggressive conversation is standard.

Yet again you show your true colours 👍

If they're playing with 12 then it's even more of a mystery how they perpetually underachieve considering the available resources.

🤣

Which suggests you haven't watched any of the England games at all as that's not the attitude they have demonstrated at all and you are seemingly just making asinine contrarian comments for the sake of it which is frankly a bit miserable. Of course people can support who they want, it's the extreme nature of people's dislike that is wild!

Engerlund · 15/07/2026 15:53

Harry Kane is an amazing man. Clean living and still with his childhood sweetheart. Has a mental health charity.

I'm proud he's our captain.
I'm sure there's plenty more positive stories about the England team.
I know Pickford is a good sort.

I'm not an imperialist, so claiming rights and ownership of land thousands of miles away, across the ocean is never something I'll support. It's for them to make their own case, and fight / win the debate for their own independence.
Once Scotland's independent, it'll not be anything to do with us anyway, hopefully.

No. You clearly miss the point about that.

If Scotland wins, you're right. We'll be proud and we'll make a fuss about it. But like if Spain wins, you'll not be having it shoved down your throat endlessly, because Spain doesn't dominate your media. You're allowed to control your own broadcast media. Scotland and Wales aren't. We're forced to share the UK one which is predominantly English. They already treat the UK media as if it's basically England. And not just football "in the north", means Yorkshire or Newcastle, when actually they'd be considered the midlands in the UK. But to the BBC and other media, the "north" is way south of where I am, and I'm not even close to the furthest point of Scotland.

He's also a Trump suck up. Which is why I am backing Spain.

I'd love to see him trying to keep Spain's trophy because he's petty like that, and hates Spain.

It's not even a Scotland thing. Ask the Welsh and Irish, and Aussies and Kiwis etc. ABE is a common thing. You need to ask yourself why.

Considering the other party laying claim is Argentina, an “imperialist” project in its own right, it’s much of a muchness. (Also all countries and territories arise from people “laying claim” to them. Don’t know why distance is relevant when speaking of uninhabited land.)

But the Falklanders don’t wish to be independent. They wish to be British. They have won their debate.

So that’s that.

Most Aussies I know (from my time living there) back England in sporting events unless they are playing Australia. Kiwis too.

Of course we would - absolutely! But you wouldn’t need to hear about it. It would make ‘national’ news for a day or two then it would be just celebrated and spoken about in Scotland - quite rightly so. It doesn’t work the same the other way round…

11AndCounting · 15/07/2026 17:08

I'm always a bit torn on English sports teams, but I'll tentatively put myself in the well-wisher camp.

As to Argentina, the Falklands war was before my time, and I appreciate that they have a large Welsh-speaking community, and I'd the thought of Ronaldo's seething if Messi lifted a second World Cup, so I'd prefer either of them over Spain in the final.

I'm not pro-Argentina having the Falklands, I am pro-not giving a f**k.

I don't care about some land thousands of miles away. At least not to wanting control over it. If there was some humanitarian disaster, I'd care about the suffering. But I see it as nothing to do with me.

"Also all countries and territories arise from people “laying claim” to them."

Unless it's the land I live, I don't care. If you're pro-empire and pro- imperialist. That's your prerogative. I believe the land people live on should be in their control. Scotland should be in control of its own country, and that's where my energy lies, in fighting to regain our autonomy. I don't care about some land thousands of miles across the ocean.

As for supporting the England team. Let's face it, if this was French people, or Brazilian people cheering against the England team, no one in England would give it much thought. But I think a lot of people in England don't respect Scotland and Wales as their own countries. There should be no more expectation for a Scot to support the England team, than there is for a Polish person to.

Edited

That's not been my experience, and I have cousins who have lived there their whole lives. Cricket and rugby more so than football, because they don't take the latter as seriously. But with Aussies who do take football seriously, many of them are also ABE.
