Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

Wind your neck in Mr "I'd support North Korea over Scotland."
Seriously, pick a lane and stick to it.

What ab aggressive tone.

Goldenbear · 15/07/2026 11:55

When did I post that?

You're right. My bad, it was another England supporter. There's been a few different posters in this last half hour, so I got mixed up.

Inverness1900 · 15/07/2026 11:41

"talk about bitter lemons" Didn't you just say you'd support North Korea over Scotland? Wind yer neck in, son.

No, I didn't, you are muddling me up with another poster.

Yes, I just corrected myself. My apologies.

Ireland and Wales want Argentina to win too 😀 😂

"Someone said to me recently that nothing annoys the Scots more than the English taking the moral high ground and supporting Scotland."

Speaking for myself, as a Scot, I don't care if you, or anyone else supports us. Have fun. If you feel you have a reason to support Scotland, then whatever.

It's the follow-up expectations that come along with it. They tell me they do/or used to support Scotland, like it should matter, (it doesn't). Or that it should be reciprocated.

That's what annoys me, and I presume others. It's not that you think this person is taking some moral high ground, it's that its often said with conditions, or expectations. That it should matter to us.

It's kind of like offering to come around and clean my house. And then expecting me to do the same. I can clean my own home, thanks. I don't need any help.

OK. Well, that's certainly not my stance, though obviously can't speak for other people. I don't think I've ever announced who I'm supporting. Though if someone asked me outright about a specific match, I'd say "Scotland" (or whichever other team) if that were the case.

The person who made that comment, said it in a general conversation at the start of the World Cup, when I said the only matches I could be bothered to watch at group stage were England and Scotland, because I would actively support them as home nations.

I also spent quite a bit of time in Germany when I was younger and would probably be rooting for Germany against many other teams. But I know a lot of English would probably support anyone else over Germany in that scenario.

I don't expect anyone to support any particular team, but I do find the "anyone but" position a bit childish because it comes across as petty. Instead of supporting a team for whatever positive reason (been to country A but not country B, have a friend from one, really like one or more players, etc), it's choosing based on not wanting the other team to have a win.

It's not "I'm going to give Gertrude a biscuit because I really like X about her" it's "I'm going to withhold a biscuit from Ethel because I can".

HotHotterHottest · 15/07/2026 12:03

Isn't there a church of Maradona where the largest number of non Argentinian members are Scottish.

So, both of those countries operate as hive minds, do they?

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 15/07/2026 12:22

Sadly, they all have an inferiority complex.

The British media is very Jekyll and Hide. One minute, the England team's the best thing since sliced bread. The next, they're a disgrace. But it's also the sort of biased position they take. The BBC is supposed to be British, but they'll say things like "the whole nation is on its feet," at some penalty shot, or something. What nation? Britain, or England? Who are they speaking for?

And I forget the tournament, but about 18 years ago, probably the Euros, Scotland played in the opening game, and England a few days later. And one of the commentators said something like "the tournament may have started last weekend, but here's where it really begins." I'm paraphrasing, but not exaggerating. It's pretty irritating.

And then we get article after article in the Sun, Torygraph, Mail, etc, going on about "The jocks" not supporting another country's team. And a lot of normies, whining about it. It's made me go from being indifferent, to cheering on the opposing team England plays, just to get a laugh at these people's expense. The fact that Scotland owes them anything, it's so arrogant.

Well if that’s how you get your kicks …

😂

If people are going to feel inferior to a sporting rival, it's usually because that rival is successful, and not the biggest perpetual world underachiever in the sport.

Scots would be Anyone But Germany, or Anyone But Brazil. Anyone But England makes zero sense if it's about inferiority.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 15/07/2026 12:45

Maybe we should have a team GB go to the world cup?

Inverness is spending all day and night spouting her hatred. Must have a very boring life.

Irony...

Yeah but the players would all be English 😉

This @Inverness1900 poster sounds a very sad individual. Pitiful.

What is the point if this thread OP? It just brings the petty, nasty little people out. Is that what you wanted? It's embarrassing for Scotland because 99% are not like @Inverness1900 and a few other demented posters.

Don't give them an outlet - they're wound up enough as it is!

No need for the personal attacks.

Gardenandseawitch · 15/07/2026 13:19

Anyone is entitled to choose the team they want to support!

It was a joy to see how happy the Scots were to be playing in the tournament.

In comparison the England Team always seems to be full of lack-lustre, over- paid diva players and managers who love to complain about everything and snap at each other.

Not the spirit of the game.

That's why it is good that Spain beat France because they were a real, tight team who played together and wanted to win while their opponent did not bother to really get into the match and then started turning on and criticising each other once they have lost.

Scots always support anyone but England, despite all the money we’ve given them over the years (I remember reading it was about a 10% uplift per taxpayer back when they had the independence referendum.)

In return, we think they are dour and have midges.

Attitudes like this explain why many Scottish people don't support England

Engerlund · 15/07/2026 13:27

On another note...the halftime show sounds interesting 🤣

Edited

Anyone can choose who to support

But it's really unfair to describe the England team as divas (anymore than any other football player). If I had had e.g. Bellingham's career and talent and achieved all the things he's achieved I'd be way more big headed than he seems to be
Obviously we don't know them, so they could secretly be evil puppy murderers, but the way they act in public has been largely healthy. It feels like Bellingham in particular gets stick (especially from the British press) for being "arrogant" when his main crime seems to be that he is very good at what he does and walks tall. I don't know if it's tall poppy syndrome or something worse....

BEAchDays2 · 15/07/2026 13:32

Scots are sore losers. sad but true, worst case scenario even if we lose we will be fourth in the World Cup, I don’t even know where they placed. But they couldn’t even qualify from the group stage.

I’m English, but I always support Scotland when they are playing! Sad it doesn’t always go the other way, but like I say. Sore losers! 😂

SaySomethingMan · 15/07/2026 13:32

not another one of these threads. For goodness sake! Anyone is free to want anyone to win against anyone!

Persephonia1966 · 15/07/2026 13:34

I think the Mexico game in particular was phenomenal. Both sides played really well, especially if you consider the altitude and the heat. Before the match, the press was full of dire predictions that the altitude meant England was doomed and wouldn't be able to perform on that little oxygen. After the game they don't get credit for winning in these seemingly impossible low oxygen conditions. Sigh.
Noone has to support them. But accusing them of not wanting it seems a bit much (this is also true of Argentina BTW).
