Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

I find it all rather childish, but I wouldn't get annoyed by it.

I support England first, and then any of the other home countries next, ROI, then generally Spain. I've lived in Spain, but not Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or ROI, so I suppose it would make more sense to support Spain over them, but I still feel a closer association with the rest of the UK and ROI.

Someone said to me recently that nothing annoys the Scots more than the English taking the moral high ground and supporting Scotland. I don't do it to take moral high ground, but you could and quietly relish the fact that you're probably annoying the Scots back!

Course you would. But it’s not getting you anywhere is it?
We on the other hand are having a blast and are enjoying every moment.
Inverness is miserable on a good day, so I can see why you are such a Debbie Downer.

You assume my cheering on England's opponents has anything to do with me wanting success for Scotland's team. It's two different things.

I remember Scots fans smashing up Wembley in 1977. Reenacting Bannockburn, which lead to the ending of the Home Internationals.

The Scotland/England annual match was a fixture right up into the 1990s, and since England's hooligan problem continued throughout the 70s, 80s, and into the 90s, I don't believe this was the main driver in seeing off the old Home Nations tournament.

What killed it was a lack of interest from the respective FAs thanks to the increased amount of football being played. Same reason the annual game and the Rous Cup died, too many other competitive fixtures requiring dates, and more money to be made by arranging Friendlies with more lucrative opponents. It served a purpose when it determined FIFA qualification, but after the advent of Euro and WC qualifying it ceased to have any real reason to exist.

If the Welsh and NI FA's had their way I doubt much would have changed, but there was no interest in keeping the status quo going from the English FA, and I don't think the SFA would have been bothered to see the back of it either. The Rous Cup was fun in it's own way, but that itself was just a desperate attempt to inject some life into an old format that had really died due to lack of meaning and interest. Scotland vs Chile was played in front of 9000 people rattling around inside Hampden. Total disinterest.

I would support North Korea over Scotland tbh.

Easy to become independent. Give England the vote too and you will be on your own.
You chickened out last time and now even Nicola Sturgeon, the old hero of the SNP, would rather live in England. What went wrong?

Why should England get to choose? It's for the people of Scotland. YOU can choose your own place in the union. Can Scots vote England out of the union?
It doesn't work that way. Unfortunately, it's England, the parliament and lawmakers and parties there, that's preventing Scotland from having a referendum. Every PM from Theresa May on, has blocked one. Regardless of their excuses, and believe me, they'll find them, it shouldn't be their call.

CurlewKate · 15/07/2026 10:37

Speaking as a person who picks her team on a match by match basis based entirely on their colour of the socks…

Also, what you say is wrong. The majority of Scots voted to leave the UK.
Google it. Also, couldn't give a crap about Sturgeon. Making this about one politician is silly. I've been supporting independence for Scotland longer than she's been in politics. https://www.thetimes.com/travel/destinations/uk-travel/scotland-travel/majority-of-scottish-born-voters-said-yes-z7v2mmhc8nt

Majority of Scottish born voters said ‘yes’

Most Scottish-born voters backed leaving the UK in last year’s referendum. The findings from the Scottish Referendum Survey show that Scotland only remained in the Union because of the views of

Scotland look unlikely to qualify for the Euros, part of which are being held in Scotland. They are in a qualifying group with Spain and Norway. No that would be hilarious.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 15/07/2026 10:44

I have got that wrong, the draw for the groups hasn't been made yet.

I'm sure this will come as a shock to Spain, Norway, and even Scotland, since the qualifying draw for Euro 2028 doesn't take place until December of this year.

I already said I was wrong, I googled euro qualifying groups and got the last groups. It would still be funny if Scotland didn't qualify.

Well considering there is automatic qualification as Group winner, playoff entry as Group runner-up, playoff entry on a Nations League Ticket, and UEFA holds back 2x qualification slots for Host Nations who do not otherwise qualify, all Scotland actually need to do to get there is finish with a better record than either Wales or the Republic of Ireland, something they have managed consistently of late.

TemperanceWest · 15/07/2026 10:50

allthiscarryon · 15/07/2026 06:47

Exactly! Come on Argentina! If Harry Kane can stop diving every 5 seconds England might be in with a shot though there’s a certain pleasure in seeing him rolling around waving his hands in the air for a free kick that he’s not getting cos play has already moved to the other end of the pitch.

I am far from a football expert but even I noticed he does that!

The wall to wall coverage on the UK media is so annoying, but that isn't the fault of the team.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 15/07/2026 10:52

Let's hope England and Wales do badly, but better than Scotland.

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 15/07/2026 10:54

So Scotlands best chance of making the euros is to hope England do well. Oh dear, anyone but England no good anymore. That will be funny.

Well no.

Scotland's best chance of qualifying for Euro 2028 is by winning their Quali group, or by progressing through the playoffs, or by finishing as one of the top two Host Nations on record.

What England do is entirely irrelevant.

Keep trying though.

It’s all jealousy and ignorance. The people spouting hatred have never lived here. It get passed through families, like a religion.

This is so funny. No one can have a legitimate reason to hate. If someone hates you, or something you enjoy, they're just jealous. It's so easy to take this position, then you can simply sit back and think nothing more of it.

The whole coming home " nonsense " referred to the fact Euro 96 was played in England so football wss coming home
The countrry that invented the modern game the lyrics acknowledge the fact that although fans have high hopes for England they ususlly cock it up at the last minute
Whilst fans are hope England can win
Realistically they know its unlikely

Except it wasn't just developed in England. Scotland made football a passing game. We've just as much right to claim it. Though you won't hear us chanting about bringing anything home. It's kind of arrogant.

Scotland have only once won a qualifying group, so that's unlikely. They have finished 2nd about half the time. So that's 50/50. Then it's 50/50 in the play off. So Scotland have 1/4 chance of not relying on one of the reserved spots.

So it's C'mon England and anyone but Wales or Ireland.

No dafter than to hold a grudge with Argentina for a war started half a century ago, by an English PM.

The war started when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falklands. I don’t know how that equates to an English PM starting the war.

I don't give a second thought to a piece of territory we claimed half way across the world. It's a lingering ember of a dead empire. And the empire is nothing to be proud of.
