Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

YABU

I don’t think anyone gets to decide who someone else should support. And in all honesty, why do you care? Support who you like, let others do the same.

England has plenty of its own supporters (more people in greater London than the whole of Scotland after all). It’s not like it makes any difference to the outcome either.

FWIW I’m Scottish- not much into football. I might be more inclined to support England if your media (and I include those who are allegedly British, not English) had a little less arrogance and a lot more humility. And if I thought that if you were to win, it would be anything other than excruciating for the foreseeable future.

Before anyone says it- it’s not jealousy. We know Scotland aren’t likely to win a World Cup. We accepted it a long time ago and most of us are ok with it (even if we might secretly keep a tiny flicker of hope alive 😜).

I think the media has a lot to answer for re arrogance and hyperbole. I have not met a single England supporter who thinks that England will win the World Cup!

Oh god, you're pathetic. Clearly you do care. Hence your response. You feel entitled to have people in other countries support your team. You also bring up a war with Argentina, decades ago, that Thatcher dragged us into. I support independence. Once Scotland's out of the UK, the Falklands won't be our problem anyway. And far more Scots, including my own ancestors, died in wars with the English, protecting our country, than any other nation. If you want to make it about wars.

Except I was responding to a post about the Falklands. I didn’t bring it up. So that kind of made you look more pathetic.

Is there a particular reason for nastiness/ jealousy/history/personal experience that forms your view.

I don't hate any other country and want the best team to win unless the country I'm from, when I'd hope they win. I understand why people want their own country to win.

Nastiness or wanting downfall of random team seems odd though. I cannot imagine hating another country so much.

It’s all jealousy and ignorance. The people spouting hatred have never lived here. It get passed through families, like a religion.

I'm English and I get why Scots wsnt Argentina to win.
We hfamously treated the scots badly in the past. Plelus Argentina are no doubt incredible players.
I am rooting for England though.

Xnz2022 · Yesterday 05:47

I think it is the one sided nature of this that makes English fans feel weird about it, compared with other rivalries..

For example, Liverpool fans would cheer for anyone against Man united in a cup final.. and likewise Man united will cheer for anyone against Liverpool. It's equal and a propper rivalry.

But honestly, although it was a fierce rivalry on both sides in the past, if the final was anyone vs Scotland today, a huge amount of English, I'd wager the majority, will be cheering for Scotland.

Which is why some English find it weird that the rivalry is still so intense in the other direction.

Haters gonna hate 🤣

It has no effect on the outcome so who gives a shit.

Exactly! Come on Argentina! If Harry Kane can stop diving every 5 seconds England might be in with a shot though there’s a certain pleasure in seeing him rolling around waving his hands in the air for a free kick that he’s not getting cos play has already moved to the other end of the pitch.

No dafter than to hold a grudge with Argentina for a war started half a century ago, by an English PM. The falklands are a non-issue for me. I support independence, presumably, post independence, they'll cease to be anything to do with us anyway. Scotland's been dragged into other wars, far more recently, by UK governments who keep sucking up to the US.

"Four nations close together." When has proximity had anything to do with it? You don't see the English fans prioritizing French and German teams over more distant ones. I need more than proximity, something outside of my control, to like someone. Every street has some shitty neighbours, but you have to deal with it.

"lot of English people , have. Scottish, irish , Welsh heritage anyway
As will Scottish people."
Some might. Most don't. Nor do i as far as I can tell, through family tree and genetic research. All Scottish, except for a 4x Great-grandmother from Cork. And that's still not a valid reason in my book.

Maybe you're right- I don't like deep fried anything!

I’ve lived in England for 25 years. My DH is English, my DS is English. I will never, ever support England. It’s a football rivalry.

Nothing beats a good dose of arrogance and condescension I see. Just because we are all part of the UK doesn't mean we have to love England and support them.

The whole of England is rocking today.
you won’t dampen our spirits.
keep buying those Argie shirts and boost our coffers!

Oh come on. The regular hyperbolic “it’s coming home” nonsense every time England ply football is enough to put anyone non-English off supporting England, not just the Scots.

On a personal level, I’m pretty unbothered, until people pipe up to tell me I’m somehow obligated to support England. The impact of that? ¡Vamos, Argentina! 🇦🇷

The whole coming home " nonsense " referred to the fact Euro 96 was played in England so football wss coming home
The countrry that invented the modern game the lyrics acknowledge the fact that although fans have high hopes for England they ususlly cock it up at the last minute
Whilst fans are hope England can win
Realistically they know its unlikely

Seriously, can’t wait for it to be over. These threads appear every few days. Sick of the hype, the media and who the Scots should and shouldn’t support. You wonder why we find it so tiresome.

Mon the Argentina.

The war started when Argentina invaded and occupied the Falklands. I don’t know how that equates to an English PM starting the war.

Given the history it’s understandable to be honest. I grew up supporting France because my dad is French. This was awkward at school so I’d pretend to support England. Now I sort of don’t care that much but felt a bit sad France played so shit last night. I’d prefer England to win tonight. It’s up to Scots who they want to support, they don’t need to support England because they border with us.

TheCastleRascal · Yesterday 09:58

I don't know any genuine England football fan who cares in the least that the Scots support 'anyone but England'. Because it's not a genuine football rivalry - they're a complete irrelevance, who happen to be nearby. It'd like Man City fans caring about Salford fans wanting them to lose!

I’ve no idea but they’re only divisive if you let them get that way. Just tolerate who people want to support and don’t care so much.

I remember Scots fans smashing up Wembley in 1977. Reenacting Bannockburn, which lead to the ending of the Home Internationals.
