Aibu thinking Scots shouldn't be wanting Argentina to win against England?

Engerlund · 13/07/2026 18:49

It's getting beyond banter now imo.

I know plenty of Scots agree with me.

I'm half Scottish (dad) so always support both. In the past I'd probably want Scotland to win if it was them against England to be honest. Although now because of the Argentina support I'm going off supporting Scotland.

I desperately want England to win this one more than against any other team.

Why is It ok to hate one country ?

I was neutral but am now backing Argentina because of this thread

🤣 Sorry that’s a complete lie. Maybe check before you post such nonsense.

Her post reminds me to order my prescription that I have to pay for. I should see if she wants me to pay for hers at the same time. Put more in than they take out my eye.

Scots should want to see Infantino the FIFA president have his dream of Messi lifting the trophy again ruined.

So want England to lose in the final.

How juvenile.

NinjaCoffee · 14/07/2026 09:37

I’m Scottish. I used to live in London, I have family who are English - I in no way dislike England, but I want Argentina to win. Why? The media. The ‘it’s coming home’. The aggressive fans (not all of them) The WAGS and what they are wearing (no one cares) It is quite insufferable, and constant. And it ends when England leave the World Cup.

ENGLANDalltheway · 14/07/2026 09:37

ColdAsAWitches · 13/07/2026 19:01

No, I think it would be a lot funnier for them to lose to Argentina again, than it would to lose to France or Spain. The history adds to the salt in the wound.

Is there a particular reason for nastiness/ jealousy/history/personal experience that forms your view.

I don't hate any other country and want the best team to win unless the country I'm from, when I'd hope they win. I understand why people want their own country to win.

Nastiness or wanting downfall of random team seems odd though. I cannot imagine hating another country so much.

Xenophobia oozes out of their posts. Imagine using the same narrative about any other country. So if we lose to Argentina we earned our place in the semi. You have to wonder if half of the reason the Scots never progress is a lack of self belief. Their fan's are too busy caring what England are doing.

JMSA · 14/07/2026 09:42

I’m Scottish but had a really positive experience of living and working down South after my graduation. I was there for over a decade and my two eldest children were born there. So I’d feel really hypocritical not to support England.
I just wouldn’t tell my dad 🤣

EarlofShrewsbury · 14/07/2026 10:08

You can't tell people who to support, and everyone is free to support whoever they want.
But the 'anyone but England' crowd aren't actually supporting another team. Supporting a team means wanting them to succeed because you genuinely like them. Most of them don't care if Argentina, Spain or whoever wins anything else or even makes the final, they just want England to lose.

There's a difference between supporting someone and rooting against someone.
I want England to win, but I don't enjoy watching other teams lose. Basing your enjoyment on someone else's disappointment seems a bit sad to me.
Support whoever you want. But actively hoping a team fails says a lot about someone's character. Personally, I think it's pretty childish.

Scots always support anyone but England, despite all the money we’ve given them over the years (I remember reading it was about a 10% uplift per taxpayer back when they had the independence referendum.)

In return, we think they are dour and have midges.

Oh dear. You've given us nothing. And even if you had, we wouldn't want your money. Hence support for independence now being higher than support for the union.

Inverness1900 · 14/07/2026 11:39

x2boys · 13/07/2026 19:32

And if scoland had won do you think they would just smile demurely and have a celebratory cup of tea?
Honesltyl i dont think Think England are going to win but whilst they are still in the competition there is still a bit of hope.

the difference is, you wouldn't hear much about it. Scotland and Wales are banned from managing their own broadcasting media. We're stuck with the "UK" one, which is overwhelmingly English. They treat the BBC ITV etc, as if England's the default team for the whole UK, instead of just one of the four teams. If Scotland won the world cup, you're right, we'd be happy about it, and it would be talked about a lot. But you'd hear far less of it, than we'd hear the other way around.

34 Scottish people were killed in the falklands, that’s who they’re cheering on. Despicable

Nothing compared to the amount killed by England. And the Falklands war was another war we were dragged into, this time by Thatcher.

Inverness1900 · 14/07/2026 11:49

LuckyHazelFox · 13/07/2026 19:58

That's how obsessed with England they are. Sad really.

Far more Scots were killed by English people. And we're regularly at the mercy of the English electorate, with things like Brexit and Farage, etc. And we have gammons crying on This Morning, over Scotland having a bank holiday.

No way. Come on Argentina!

The type of Scots that yak about hating English people generally don't know any and a lot of them don't even like themselves.

Is this true for the Reform types, who hate everyone? Or just people who don't kiss your ring?

Inverness1900 · 14/07/2026 11:54

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/07/2026 20:57

It’s football. It doesn’t matter who anyone supports, as it’s just a game.

Yes I like football, I support England as well as another country I have heritage from (not in the World Cup though). But if I wanted to supper Egypt or Norway or whoever I could!

If it was a war against Norway or whoever (to pick and unlikely one) I would obviously be all for the country I live in and was born in, the Uk! Which would included England and Scotland, to go back to the question you’re asking.

Thank goodness football doesn’t matter and it’s just a game with all its little quirks, like Uk nations competing separately.

Scotland is my country. Not England or the UK. The UK is a political union that we're currently part of. And, well support for that is dwindling too.

Inverness1900 · 14/07/2026 11:57

JHound · 13/07/2026 21:32

What do you mean England keeps the union going? Scotland had the chance to leave and voted against it.

Inverness1900 · 14/07/2026 12:02

Aiming4Optimistic · 13/07/2026 21:13

The Argentinians still haven't given up their spurious claim to the Falkland Islands - British people died during that unnecessary conflict. Anyone who supports their team should be ashamed of themselves. You don't have to support England but you shouldn't support Argentina.

Many, many more Scots have been killed in wars with the English, trying to protect their country's existance.

It's also much bigger than historical wars. Current politics and arrogance in the media and from fans who feel they're OWED support from us, when we're different countries, etc, it all adds up.

I don't expect any ring kissing and I'm also Scottish..I can't stand small minded people no matter where they're from.

I quoted Billy Connolly on another similar thread. Apparently he said 'It's a waste of time hating England because they don't care'. It seems to be your fellow Scots who get more irritated by it

I have to say that it makes quite a refreshing change not to be the one everyone wants to lose.

Yes, this entire thread, and several others are full of English people telling us over and over again, how they... don't care.

Its a bit dsft to blame English people for wars that are centuries old
Paticularly when the four nations are so close together and a lot of English people , have. Scottish, irish , Welsh heritage anyway
As will Scottish people.

Booo Hoooo
No one cares about YOU
And just to educate you - do you realise a large proportion of servicemen who died in the Falklands were Scottish? The Argentinians obviously did not care they were Scottish or English.
So if you want to bring the Falklands into it, maybe spare a thought for the Scottish families too.

Oh god, you're pathetic. Clearly you do care. Hence your response. You feel entitled to have people in other countries support your team. You also bring up a war with Argentina, decades ago, that Thatcher dragged us into. I support independence. Once Scotland's out of the UK, the Falklands won't be our problem anyway. And far more Scots, including my own ancestors, died in wars with the English, protecting our country, than any other nation. If you want to make it about wars.

People do. They say they hate Russia, the US, China, South Korea, etc, etc all the time. Nothing to do with race.

"You have to wonder if half of the reason the Scots never progress is a lack of self belief."

Even if Scotland won every WC, I'd still cheer on England's opponents.

No dafter than to hold a grudge with Argentina for a war started half a century ago, by an English PM. The falklands are a non-issue for me. I support independence, presumably, post independence, they'll cease to be anything to do with us anyway. Scotland's been dragged into other wars, far more recently, by UK governments who keep sucking up to the US.

"Four nations close together." When has proximity had anything to do with it? You don't see the English fans prioritizing French and German teams over more distant ones. I need more than proximity, something outside of my control, to like someone. Every street has some shitty neighbours, but you have to deal with it.

"lot of English people , have. Scottish, irish , Welsh heritage anyway

Some might. Most don't. Nor do i as far as I can tell, through family tree and genetic research. All Scottish, except for a 4x Great-grandmother from Cork. And that's still not a valid reason in my book.

Viviennemary · 14/07/2026 12:31

Anyway England's got no chance. I read Messi has more or less chosen the referee. So it will be a stitch up. Obviously.

JustGiveMeTheNoodles · 14/07/2026 12:40

Ugh I think the hype puts me off supporting England. Im welsh and would like to see a neighbour won, but the hype will be off the scale
