Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Genuinely, when was the last time English fans caused problems? The authorities seem to do a pretty good job of making sure the known troublemakers can't get anywhere near the World Cup. Anything that I've seen seems to show English fans have been pretty well-received.

It will be interesting if both England and France make it to the final as I think there is a similar amount of international disdain for the French too, maybe for similar reasons (historical arrogance?).

Obviously none of the other countries have any racism at all ever. 🙄

The small minority of poor fans should not tarnish the majority.

That poster will be unaware what a Paraguyan senator said about Mbappé after France beat Paraguay. People like that aren't really aware of much outside their own country and their xenophobia

We have 2 english men thry seem to habe attitudes we wish would return home.
Ones got woman issues since divorcing and needs eap fast about a year ago.
The other is a know it all referring to how the Uk does everything.
We wish they would piss off home.
Amazing how these people move into our country yet behave like total wankers.
Omg have you seen male poms in places lile thailand etc...revolting!

Yes and we’d think they were total wankers too. But we get obnoxious people from other countries coming here too. That doesn’t excuse their behaviour and I’m very embarrassed by annoying, arrogant English people abroad especially when they’re drunk and behaving appallingly. Not much we can do about them sadly but you can’t think we’re all like that.

I loathe the creepy men that go out to places like Thailand but I doubt if they’re ALL English. In fact it’s a global issue.

Maybe I should point out that bombs were exploding on the British mainland, primarily English cities during that time.

And that the people making and planting those bombs have not been prosecuted for the historical offences.

Its not exactly a one-way street is it

Seriously? The people planting those bombs were members of an illegal organisation, proscribed by both the Irish and British governments. The people who shot unarmed civilians and got away with it were British forces shooting their fellow-citizens. Literally the official armed forces of the UK, the services for whom poppies are sold, Remembrance Sunday services held etc. For all we know the surviving shooters of Bloody Sunday, now retired servicemen, are being hailed as heroes in the Albert Hall annually. Bloody Sunday isn’t an isolated incident. The British state colluded with loyalist paramilitary organisations throughout the Troubles. Again, not some proscribed splinter group of terrorists, the actual British government.

But, as I discovered to my lasting horror during Brexit negotiations when the DUP came to the fore, a significant number of British people appeared to have no idea there were loyalist paramilitary organisations.

None of this has anything to do with football, and I wish the England team well, though I don’t think it’s likely they’ll win, but the level of ignorance about the running sore that is the legacy of the colonial policy that led to the Troubles is mind-blowing.

Believe me if you like, or don’t! But it’s true 🤩

We can’t support the Welsh - they never qualify 😜😘

😂😂😂

Harry12345 · Yesterday 10:06

ApricotTulip · Yesterday 09:59

That's not true though. If it had been only English people voting to stay you'd have left. Lots of Scottish voted to stay too, as you will know.

I know that but polls indicated a yes majority with Scottish born nationals

I think we might get more support from neutrals against Argentina?

Not from me. Anyone but England. It’s the arrogance that people hate. You turn up to every tournament expecting to win it.

On the plus side, we gave the world mumsnet. You gotta respect that.

So you want us to go into international tournaments feeling like we dont want to win?

I have little interest in soccer but I believe the game was invented here, which the coming home phrase refers to. It’s a shame the man in charge is a crook.

I agree. I have been to a good few countries around the world and people, on finding out we are English, love to talk to us and love to talk about England.
This anti English shit has been exacerbatted (like many things) since the advent of social media .
All I would say is anyone who hates England and the English so much then they are free to fuck off anywhere else they choose.
I believe North Korea is nice at this time of year 😉

That has been my experience exactly - and never more so than when I holidayed in Texas.

Trillie · Yesterday 10:09

Envy just dripping off you there. Don’t be bitter, I’m sure wherever you come from is really nice as well.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · Yesterday 10:09

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

Like lots of other football fans in other countries.

Why the fuck should a modern day German feel guilty about a holocaust they had absolutely nothing to do with? What's done is done. Never forget but dont carry a burden that was never yours to carry.

They don’t need to feel guilty but I think what the poster means is that they are very aware of it - it’s taught in schools and very much in their museums etc.
English people are extraordinarily ignorant of their dark history, the school curriculum, museums etc have no signs of it. Its unusual to meet an English person with any understanding of Anglo-Irish history for example, and think it’s still funny to joke about Irish people loving potatoes. Brexit was a cumulative effect of that which cemented the perception of misplaced English superiority. I live here and am very aware it’s not all English people, but there is a systemic problem in the education system when it comes to history.
Also some football fans have behaved terribly, giving everyone a bad reputation.

ovals · Yesterday 10:10

Do people really think that A) wanting to win a football tournament is the same as expecting to win one and B) wanting to win a football tournament is a bad thing. Imagine wanting to lose 🤯

I guarantee we do not think we are going to win anything our favourite sporting phrase in our house is "England are experts at grasping the defeat out of the jaws of victory".

I think its how the English/British behave? I'm a Brit myself but moved abroad a long time ago and I'm embarrassed to be British. Every time I come home/back to the UK - everyone is effing and jeffing, its dirty, run down, nothing works, piles of rubbish everywhere, people are rude, alot of anti social behaviour, crime, people on drugs.. maybe I'm living in a bubble but I don't see that where I live now.

musicandmen · Yesterday 09:59

they are under achievers. They have been lucky not to be knocked out of the World Cup, the defence have not been great and other than France the big teams especially Argentina have under performed which has helped England looked better they have also had an easy ride this World Cup in terms of the teams they’ve faced! Lucky to get to a semi final without having to face any of the other top 8!

England go round like they are owed something! But actually they arrogant which is why everyone wants the team to be knocked out: this is the first time in a long time the squad has been picked for the right reason and not because of the players names. And maybe after this tournament the attitude will change towards the team

Underachieving is not the same as ‘rubbish’.

They are not in control of the draw and can only play the team that’s in front of them.

They knew before the tournament the defence looked shaky and it was heavily commented on.

Their performances have been critised, I don’t know anyone saying or haven’t read reports stating otherwise.

It’s not like everyone is walking around saying they’ve been absolutely outstanding- quite the opposite.

This ‘arrogance’ comment is just something that baffles me?

They have world class players, have reached a final, quarter-final and at least two semis in the last 10 years- why is it arrogant to assume they could win it???

GingerAndTheBiscuits · Yesterday 10:11

In2mindsss · Yesterday 10:07

So you want us to go into international tournaments feeling like we dont want to win?

Exactly. It’s not like the pundits are going to sit there and say “won’t get out the group stage” when asked - and on paper England absolutely have the players to win games, as they’ve shown.

LostTheGoodScissors · Yesterday 10:11

I think people tend to see negative comments about England as ‘punching up’, especially within the UK. England has been one of the dominant cultural, economic, and political powers for a long time, so criticism often feels more acceptable. But that's arguably changing now as England's influence on the world stage is becoming less. One possible upside is that, if England is no longer perceived as the ‘big player’ it may attract less hostility.

Gloriia · Yesterday 10:12

In2mindsss · Yesterday 08:56

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

This!

I mean some of the scots are just so full of bitterness and resentment it's very sad to see.

If we lose the semis so what? We've done well to get there and that is the attitude of many English people that makes other nations full of envy. We are good natured confident people, it makes some other nations fuuuuuuume.

Speakeasier · Yesterday 10:14

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 09:49

They hate us because we are the best at everything. England is the only country to win all 3 World Cups, in Football, Rugby and Cricket.

Oh god. There’s one of them on here,

We’re clearly not the best at everything. The Brazilians and the Argentinians might disagree with you about football, the New Zealanders about rugby and the Australians about cricket.

We’ve had some great players and teams at times but that’s about it.

"In intention, at any rate, the English intelligentsia are Europeanized. They take their cookery from Paris and their opinions from Moscow. In the general patriotism of the country they form a sort of island of dissident thought. England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a poor box. All through the critical years many left-wingers were chipping away at English morale, trying to spread an outlook that was sometimes squashily pacifist, sometimes violently pro-Russian, but always anti-British."

I've lived and worked abroad. I was always pleased to come home. There are some absolutely filthy countries out there with very poor humans rights records. You should be proud to be a Brit.
