Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

Last evening we were in a popular pub in Ireland. There were equal numbers of people cheering or booing for England. It appeared to be good natured but we left before extra time started in case stuff kicked off.

Not from me. Anyone but England. It’s the arrogance that people hate. You turn up to every tournament expecting to win it.

Hahahahhahahahahhahahahhahahahha!!!

I know many England fans and not a single
one thinks we’re going to win the World Cup. If anything, England fans are unrealistically negative about our chances.

The reality is that England CAN win the World Cup and there’s nothing wrong with fans going into an international tournament upbeat and hoping we can do it, and articulating that.

What would prefer? A load of humble hand wringing about how rubbish we are? Such utter nonsense.

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

Because no other country gets a bit excited that their team might just win?
Nobody really expects England to win but they are in the semis now so there is a possibity they just might
As for Argentina
Maradona and his hand of God...

BeanQuisine · Yesterday 10:16

Anyway, I don't particularly care who wins. But looking at the stats of the semi-finalists...

World Cup winners:
Argentina - three times
France - twice
England - once
Spain - once

...it would be nice for the once-only winners to have another chance, so I'd like a Final between Spain and England.

In2mindsss · Yesterday 10:16

And that attitude is why many dislike the English.

Nah. I feel zero guilt over empire, the same way I dont expect your average German in the street to feel guilty about the holocaust, or your average Irish person to feel guilt over the Magdalene Laundries.

We did last time!

Yes, we were utter shit throughout, but we did qualify!

We Welsh were quite happy to banter that whilst England and Scotland were in the World Cup someone had to stay to put the bins out 😂

Empire, colonialism, football holiganism, Brexit etc

The 'Anyone but England 'people make me cringe. Embarrassed for them. And I'm not even a football fan

You are quite right. My DD asked about whether the commentary was neutral or pro England last night. I think we just can't help ourselves. You are also correct about Andy Murray. We'll claim anyone for a win. Greg Rusedski for example, who seemed very Canadian to me.

But why should the commentary be neutral on a national broadcaster? Have you ever listened to other countries' commentators?

Speakeasier · Yesterday 10:19

I think its how the English/British behave? I'm a Brit myself but moved abroad a long time ago and I'm embarrassed to be British. Every time I come home/back to the UK - everyone is effing and jeffing, its dirty, run down, nothing works, piles of rubbish everywhere, people are rude, alot of anti social behaviour, crime, people on drugs.. maybe I'm living in a bubble but I don't see that where I live now.

What the whole of the UK? Like everywhere is dirty? Everyone effs? Nothing works? Piles of rubbish everywhere?

We have a lot of social problems, yes. There are some deprived and vulnerable areas, yes. But it’s crazy to extrapolate that to the entire country.

Where do you live that’s so perfect?

hypnovic · Yesterday 10:19

Maybe because we behave appallingly in other countries and have been over run with right wing racist gammon

Namenamchange · Yesterday 10:19

Poppingby · Yesterday 09:00

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

That’s isn’t unique to Britain at all, many European countries are also racist a thugs and badly behaved.

How can you use the word racist right next to a racist slur and still take yourself seriously?

Do you live here out of interest? I am definitely not patriotic but I do follow international football avidly and in the current climate, and the fact I have a stressful life means this tournament has been a lifeline. I have watched most games and also wanted Cape Verde and Ecuador to do well. Real fans embrace the whole tournament and rarely talk about it ‘coming home’. I ask if you live here because when I was married to a New Zealander all him and his friends did was moan about the UK and actually it was insulting, disrespectful and irritating and not something I did when I have lived abroad. It is somehow acceptable to slag off the UK, which I don’t really understand either. I think we are a hugely flawed nation so am not saying we don’t deserve criticism but its a bit relentless and one sided!

The meaning of 'Three Lions' is not that at all, for a start it was written by the Lightening Seeds who ate hardly "jingoistic", they are reflecting on the passion and frustration of being an England fan and it's a hopeful song. The 'home' bit is because football as it is known today was invented in England.

And I think what really annoys the Welsh and Scottish is that most English people couldn’t give a flying fuck that you don’t support us 😂🥳

If that were true why are we always asked if we are supporting England?
For me I don’t understand why England chooses the British national anthem, I do not associate the St George’s cross with anything pleasant and this is getting worse and worse now with flags on lampposts and also how the fans turn on their team when they lose.
jealousy and xenophobia have nothing to do with it.

Mumberjack · Yesterday 10:23

As a Scot (aside from the football being more about the commentators’ need to mention England in every other bloody game) I struggle with the inability for people to separate Britishness and Englishness, and I don’t like feeling lumped in with the vision of roundabout-painters.

And before anyone starts with the motor home chat, the scale of corruption in Westminster esp around Covid contracts deserves far more attention. It rankles having to suck that up while London based media crows about scotlands issues.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · Yesterday 10:23

I think it's a number of factors.

  1. Colonialisam is not so distant in some countries
  2. The English / British arrogance. For example thinking that our health service is the 'envy of the world - in reality most EU countries have better outcomes and I know plenty of people who have for example gone abroad to have a baby back to their home country because the care is better. I remember in covid people thinking it wouldn't affect the uk much because our health system is so much better than everyone elise,.our hygiene is so much better than everyone else etc. It isn't.
  3. Past behaviour of fans although this is not unique to the uk
  4. The way that Britons behave abroad. And this does seem to be notably worse than other nations. The refusal to learn any local language. The excessive drinking. The demands for English food, TV etc. This isn't just English but I'm not sure that the distinction (eg between Welsh and Scottish) is made. I think this is probably quite a big one, and one of the reasons that's one people don't like Americans
  5. Brexit. Again the arrogance that we are better than Europe, that being aligned with them was dragging us down, that we'd be better on our own. Which was clearly misplaced
  6. The media. Whether 'it's coming home' is meant to be ironic or sarcastic or not, every time fans yell it out in an interview it doesn't come across that way. It comes across as people thinking it's their right to win. I always find it mad as well when England lose the media completely lose interest in thr world cup. Again probably not a uniquely English trait but probably amplified due to the reach of thr English media
  7. People often support the underdog
  8. Football has a culture of rivalry for other good teams. Man City fans hate Man U, they don't bother hating Oldham for example
  9. It really winds English people up when people dont support them. I often see people who aren't from England quizzed on who they're supporting and then lectured on why they should be supporting England. E.g. because the English 'let them live here', or because in theory they'd support the other person's team if it was the other way around. It seems to personally offend people. It's a game. It makes no difference to the outcome. Why do people care?
ShitaBrick · Yesterday 10:24

I find supporting England much like supporting my club team. Excellent at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, never expect them to win, though it’s great when they do. The banter is self deprecating and ironic.

However, my club won their league this season, so I’m now thinking anything is possible. 😁

GardenCovent · Yesterday 10:24

I’m Scottish, it has nothing to do with the English team and nothing to do with the English supporters but everything to do with the British media and commentators.
Im not talking about regional news I’m talking about the main news and main commentators. The endless “we” when they are talking about England is infuriating, they see England as their team but are getting paid to broadcast, commentate on behalf of the whole of the UK.
I can’t speak on behalf of why the Bostonians loved having the Tartan Army over but closed up when the English arrived though
