Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

What is so bad about being excited to think that we might bring the world cup home? Does this only apply to England fans?
Maybe its just jealousy? We have brought it home once already and are 2 games away from doing it again.
Which is more than Scotland have 🤣

That’s the thing, Scotland don’t care. We were just happy to be in Boston. Happy to be part of a tournament. We never expected to get out of the group stages. If you’ve been any social media you know that for Scotland it’s just about being there. No Scotland, no Party. That’s why we are often named supporters of the tournament (when we make it of course 😂).

Colonialism, genocide during the Irish famine, Brexit, the violence of football fans, the loud behaviour and excessive drinking when abroad.

We're talking about boycotting Scottish made products.
I dont know about you, but my flushing toilet wasnt made in Scotland...fair play to you if yours is though

So what are the three that you're boycotting?

I think it is because of colonisation. Present day Germans actually feel rather guilty and remorseful about their nazi past whereas the English don’t.

Why the fuck should a modern day German feel guilty about a holocaust they had absolutely nothing to do with? What's done is done. Never forget but dont carry a burden that was never yours to carry.

Yeah I don’t get this, didn’t they have a referendum of their own and vote to remain ? What’s that all about ?

It’s about all the English people who live here voting, if it was just Scot’s born here the vote would have been for independence

OneLemonLion · Yesterday 09:56

I don’t know anything about the football but the British Empire was not ‘hundreds of years ago’, it continued into the middle of the 20th century. There are people alive who were born under it, and countless whose parents and grandparents lives were blighted by it, including by its ending - partition of the Indian subcontinent as just one (huge and largely undiscussed) example. Descendants of colonial subjects in this country and around the world still suffer many forms of hardship as a direct result of the empire’s impact on their heritage countries, including the extraction of resources and labour to build this country’s wealth (and yes that went on for hundreds of years).

I’m not saying anyone should hate anyone for historical events, what’s more important is practical reparations and social justice including through education, but the attitude of ‘it was hundreds of years ago, people should just get over it’ is likely to contribute to people in some other countries feeling aggrieved by the current English population, who absolutely still benefit from the wealth and cultural capital obtained through empire.

Well, next time you chat, maybe ask him about anti-Irish prejudice he’s experienced in those 40 years? Yes, only a tiny minority, but it got wearying, because you never know when it’s going to raise its ugly head. I went home in the end after nearly 30 years because it got worse after Brexit and I didn’t want my child growing up with it. DH and I were able to find jobs and move home easily. Your postman may not have that option.

He obviously didn’t share his entire family history with me but he has told me in the past he likes his life here. His children were born here etc. he has a lot of family in Ireland and visits often but said he wouldn’t move back, he didn’t say why. In conversation we have talked about how we like living in London. I am from the north I said I like living here and wouldn’t move back north, he pretty much said the same thing about Ireland.

It's your arrogance in football that does it. And your hooligans are some of the worst. Drunken, obnoxious, aggressive, violent and loud idiots.

Of which there are precisely three...

Love how quickly the comments come that show exactly why Scotland thinks English are arrogant

And that attitude is why many dislike the English.

That's not true though. If it had been only English people voting to stay you'd have left. Lots of Scottish voted to stay too, as you will know.

Sorry but you sound like you’re 12.

’But they’re rubbish’ well they’re clearly not, are they?!

they are under achievers. They have been lucky not to be knocked out of the World Cup, the defence have not been great and other than France the big teams especially Argentina have under performed which has helped England looked better they have also had an easy ride this World Cup in terms of the teams they’ve faced! Lucky to get to a semi final without having to face any of the other top 8!

England go round like they are owed something! But actually they arrogant which is why everyone wants the team to be knocked out: this is the first time in a long time the squad has been picked for the right reason and not because of the players names. And maybe after this tournament the attitude will change towards the team

I would love to answer this by saying I am English but fluently speak many languages but sadly I have minimal French and can ask a German pen friend if they have brothers and sisters. You are completely correct, sadly.

Duolingo is excellent for this. A few months of lessons before you go away gives you enough of a language to be polite in a restaurant/shop/market stall. I'm pretty fluent in French anyway but now have conversational Italian and Spanish.

That said, last year I was in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium and spoke French and was informed they prefer to speak English- literally anything but French! So there's a place that doesn't hate England in the face of a worse alternative

Taytocrisps · Yesterday 10:00

There's a lot of anti-English sentiment in Ireland, especially when it comes to big sporting events like the World Cup. In our case, it's due to colonisation. The Irish people suffered terribly during the centuries of English occupation, culminating in the devastating famine of the 1840s.

We gained our independence in 1921, but our country was divided, which in turn set the scene for the Troubles. When the British army was brought in to quell the violence, the soldiers behaved very dishonourably (to put it mildly). The British army colluded with Loyalist terrorist groups. In 1971 the British army killed 11 innocent civilians in Belfast (the Ballymurphy massacre). The Parachute Regiment shot 26 unarmed civilians (all Catholics) during a protest march in Derry in 1972 (Bloody Sunday). The British state was complicit in the wrongful conviction of the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four. These events didn't take place hundreds of years ago.

More recently, English people showed little consideration for the people of Northern Ireland (and the fragile peace process) when they voted for Brexit. This has damaged Anglo-Irish relations.

Having said all of the above, if England hadn't colonised Ireland, then I'm sure it would have been another European country - France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium? Take your pick. And if it hadn't been for the British army, Ireland would surely have been invaded by Germany in World War I and II.

I hope that as time goes by, we can move on from the events of the past and forge a genuine friendship. But Irish people still find it very hard to cheer on England.

It doesn't bother me that English fans go on about winning the World Cup in 1966. We still go on about reaching the quarter finals in Italia '90 Grin. Sadly, we didn't qualify this year. The tournament isn't quite the same without the Irish team and our fans. Anyway, I'm enjoying watching all of the matches and I hope all of the fans are having a blast. Sad that we're coming to the end of the tournament.

Is it a ‘small minority’? If so, it’s a loud, very visible one. That broadly isn’t seen from other countries.

Not racism but Mexico have been called out for using a homophobic chant towards goal keepers.

mainly it boils down to jealousy i think. There’s always a bit of rivalry there though. I myself rolled my eyes at all the ‘no Scotland no party’ nonsense as if they’re the only fans capable of having a good time.

ApricotTulip · Yesterday 10:00

Most people don't care about bitter xenophobes. If you do though best to boycott their products and move on.

ilovesooty · Yesterday 10:01

Yeah we're so xenophobic, unlike Norway with their all white team and supporters

The Norwegian team isn't all white.

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

How many football supporters do you actually know? Many England supporters have little to no confidence in us ever winning another trophy, absolutely the opposite view to the one you suggest.

As for 'it's coming home', you obviously know nothing about the song and why the lyrics say what they do.

BeanQuisine · Yesterday 10:02

In2mindsss · Yesterday 08:56

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

Actually, not so long ago, the English had a reputation for being modest and "self-deprecating", and some are still like that.

Others, like you, are now trying to outdo the Americans for unappealing self-worship.

Slightyamusedandsilly · Yesterday 10:02

It's how we act abroad whether as tourists or ex pats (immigrants).

Drunk. Loud. Arrogant.

I've lived in 4 other countries and we have a bad reputation for how we act when we're tourists and ex pats aren't much better.

Tben · Yesterday 10:02

The Hooligan thing needs calling out for the total bullshit it is. There was a hooliganism problem in the 1980s, now largely dealt with. Yes, some England fans act very poorly, in common with a minority of fans from every nation. There was violence after the France v Morocco game the other day. Some Eastern European fans make monkey noises at black players, and have neo-Nazi elements. If you think Scottish fans are lovely, I suggest you attend an Old Firm derby, especially if you like a bit of sectarian bigotry.

I’ve attended several England games and never felt unsafe.

Hooliganism is just a convenient excuse, because if it was the real reason its proponents would hate most of the other footballing nations too.
