There's a lot of anti-English sentiment in Ireland, especially when it comes to big sporting events like the World Cup. In our case, it's due to colonisation. The Irish people suffered terribly during the centuries of English occupation, culminating in the devastating famine of the 1840s.
We gained our independence in 1921, but our country was divided, which in turn set the scene for the Troubles. When the British army was brought in to quell the violence, the soldiers behaved very dishonourably (to put it mildly). The British army colluded with Loyalist terrorist groups. In 1971 the British army killed 11 innocent civilians in Belfast (the Ballymurphy massacre). The Parachute Regiment shot 26 unarmed civilians (all Catholics) during a protest march in Derry in 1972 (Bloody Sunday). The British state was complicit in the wrongful conviction of the Birmingham Six and the Guildford Four. These events didn't take place hundreds of years ago.
More recently, English people showed little consideration for the people of Northern Ireland (and the fragile peace process) when they voted for Brexit. This has damaged Anglo-Irish relations.
Having said all of the above, if England hadn't colonised Ireland, then I'm sure it would have been another European country - France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium? Take your pick. And if it hadn't been for the British army, Ireland would surely have been invaded by Germany in World War I and II.
I hope that as time goes by, we can move on from the events of the past and forge a genuine friendship. But Irish people still find it very hard to cheer on England.
It doesn't bother me that English fans go on about winning the World Cup in 1966. We still go on about reaching the quarter finals in Italia '90
. Sadly, we didn't qualify this year. The tournament isn't quite the same without the Irish team and our fans. Anyway, I'm enjoying watching all of the matches and I hope all of the fans are having a blast. Sad that we're coming to the end of the tournament.
