Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

englandd · Yesterday 08:52

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

A postman who delivers where I work is Irish but has lived in England for around 40 years, he made it very clear he’ll support literally any other team rather than England. It kind of put me off him to be honest, seemed like he wanted to cause a bit of drama. I said that’s a Shame as you said you love living in England, why be so against the country you live in? He just shrugged and said ‘come on Norway’.

Well, next time you chat, maybe ask him about anti-Irish prejudice he’s experienced in those 40 years? Yes, only a tiny minority, but it got wearying, because you never know when it’s going to raise its ugly head. I went home in the end after nearly 30 years because it got worse after Brexit and I didn’t want my child growing up with it. DH and I were able to find jobs and move home easily. Your postman may not have that option.

Agreed.

All these posters saying, ‘oh it’s the arrogance’, ‘entitlement they think they’re going to win’ etc

Nonsense. I don’t think I know anyone who thinks we’re going to win it!

Edited

Xenophobes come up with any excuse.

A lot of online debate is led by Americans who have a very limited understanding of history and other countris. For a certain type of online progressive American the UK (and specifically England) are unique in oir colonial past.

Now we have a lot to be ashamed of in our history but, for example, the French and Spanish also have shameful brutal colonial pasts (including in the USA) - the French like us, were still fighting colonial wars up to the mid to late 20th Century but because it is not in the English speaking world the Americans seem unaware of it.

It always amuses me how Scotland seems to dodge responsibilty for empire in the eyes of many on the left - there is a good reason why many people from the West Indies have Scottish surnames and the accent in Northern Ireland is like it is.

It’s because the fans have a reputation for humourless violence, racism, and thuggery. I know most aren’t, but mud sticks and once the reputation is established it’s hard to lose it.

Doesnt everyone think/hope they will win?
My God their are some miserable fuckers on MN today. Its all about the anticipation, the tears of joy/pain, the singing of Three Lions. But oh no, its England so we must not be seen to be supporting our team enthusiastically

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 09:49

They hate us because we are the best at everything. England is the only country to win all 3 World Cups, in Football, Rugby and Cricket.

This needs highlighting for the people too young to know about it, or who have forgotten.

Unarmed. Shot dead. 1972.

Maybe I should point out that bombs were exploding on the British mainland, primarily English cities during that time.

And that the people making and planting those bombs have not been prosecuted for the historical offences.

Its not exactly a one-way street is it

You know its just a bit of a laugh and nobody actually believes that, dont you? You know most people watch england play with a tiny spark of hope buried under the overwhelming certainty that we are going to balls it....again?

Exactly this!! I work for an international team and when I explained that the 3 lions song is, well, a bit of a piss take, they were absolutely shocked.

this makes me sad, I love the Welsh

Why does it make you sad? I used to live in Wales - love the Welsh and the country - we’re only talking about football not the people 😀. It’s a bit of fun - once every two years 😀

CatesandAle · Yesterday 09:50

Floatingdownriver · Yesterday 08:55

In my very humble opinion it’s not colonisation. It’s the human instinct to support the underdog and root for the unlikely winner. And in many football competitions national confidence in the English side ‘bringing it home’ etc rubs people up the wrong way.

I don’t really follow football, but doesn’t England mostly lose? Except when it’s the women’s team playing.

Nope! 😆

You don't need to. You just need to laugh it off and move on. You're never going to stop the bigots from being hypocrites. Fuck em.

And we also happened to invent them all, along with tennis. Pretty impressive if you ask me ☺️

Penicillin, television and the flushing toilet? No wait, not those three...

Mostly lose?
What does that even mean?

Last 4 major tournaments, they’ve got to the final, quarter-finals and at least semi-finals twice.

Two Euros finals and two World Cup semis in the last decade, isn’t a bad showing.

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

You don’t get it at all then. That song’s all about failure and how we always lose!!!

It’s about hoping that one day we turn things around and actually win the bloody thing. We hoped to when that song came out because we were hosting the tournament and we invented the game hence football coming home but it was always tongue in cheek and we always tend to think we’ll be plucky losers.

Of course there are some arrogant English people who think they are owed victory but equally there are arrogant Americans, French, Germans and most certainly Argentinians. And there are far more English people who loathe the leery, drunken element than English people who are like them.

Personally I think we’ve been slightly better overall than Argentina who’ve had some slices of big luck apart from Lionel Messi who’s arguably the best player in the tournament at 39! But I think the Spanish and even more the French are better than either of the teams left in our side of the draw. So whoever gets through is likely to be trounced in the final.

Inmyuggs · Yesterday 09:53

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

We have 2 english men thry seem to habe attitudes we wish would return home.
Ones got woman issues since divorcing and needs eap fast about a year ago.
The other is a know it all referring to how the Uk does everything.
We wish they would piss off home.
Amazing how these people move into our country yet behave like total wankers.
Omg have you seen male poms in places lile thailand etc...revolting!

I know, it makes me laugh.

Would the Scottish, Welsh or Irish not be the same in our boat?

Ironfloor269 · Yesterday 09:54

In2mindsss · Yesterday 08:56

Its nothing to do with empire because as you point out loads of countries had them and scotland was very willingly involved in the British one. Its not like everyone hates Germany because nazis.

Its because we're awesome and consistently go our own way, and it doesnt matter what kind of hate we get, we just dont give a fuck. Im guessing from the outside it must be infuriating to watch how nothing ever dampens our self love, but what can we do! People dont like france for the same reason

I think it is because of colonisation. Present day Germans actually feel rather guilty and remorseful about their nazi past whereas the English don’t.

2021x · Yesterday 09:54

Yeah I get your frustration. I live in NZ and used to work with a couple irish women who would openly mock the english staff calling us colonisers and murderers and theives during the social/work events- even when one of them was their boss. It really bought put a bummer on vibe for everyone and the kiwis thought it was really strange how we just took it and didn't say anything back. They also loved to take any opportunity to tell us about our own culture and how awful we were and one of them was married to an English guy.

It might have just been them jeering each other on but in the end it was so tiresome I stopped hanging out with them especially when I was celebrating anything to do with England.

Violetprimrose · Yesterday 09:54

I think it's become 'cool' to dislike the English a bit like it's become ' cool' to dislike Nickelback and U2. Brexit was the most recent trigger to all the hate we get. Our history isn't the best but most nations have a sinister past. I'm half Irish, half English, my grandparents fled Ireland to England in the 40s due to Irelands economic struggle. Ireland never really recovered from the famine which was partly engineered by the English government at the time. English politics were cruel, especially towards the poor but there was also some good people in our history who fought for people's rights and were instrumental in abolishing slavery, discrimination and conditions for the poor and needy.
I think people who hate the English have just been unfortunate to experience the worst of the English for example tourists who are ignorant, drunk and violent, racists who unfortunately seem to be gaining traction. English culture seems to have been overshadowed by all these negatives. I love a traditional fry up, roast dinners, watching Wimbledon on TV, complaining about the weather, afternoon tea, sarcasm, British sitcoms, dipping biscuits in tea, traditional seaside holidays, saying please, thankyou and sorry too much. All these quite essentially English quirks have almost been forgotten about and it's a shame.
