Why does everyone hate us so much ?!

I’m talking about being English, spent alot of time on the cesspit that is Reddit this World Cup and the vast majority absolutely hate England, I known it stems from the British empire but as far as I’m aware it wasn’t just England who were bad back then was it ? I mean Spain and Portugal took a big part in colonialism too but why is it just the English that gets the hate ?
Last night I would’ve been genuinely happy to support Norway if they went through, I can’t imagine hating another nation so badly. Maybe I shouldn’t take it personally 😆

Aibu ? Do we deserve the hate we get from something that happened hundreds of years ago ? For what it’s worth the British empire were ruthless and I don’t celebrate anything they did, but I also don’t think we should be punished still for something that happened so so long ago.

I’d really work on your tendency to make giant generalisations based on your single group of ‘online friends’ whom you’ve probably never met.

It’s not generalisations, I’m fully aware it’s just my friend’s opinion. And we have met, we found eachother years ago, had weekends away together and loads of video group chats. They’re a fab bunch of people, and it’s all banter. It’s actually been a really fascinating lesson in how England is perceived.

For me it's the arrogance of the British Empire that seems to come out in the British fans - I find the 'it's coming home' so off-putting given just how much the British Empire took from other countries (and have never really been held accountable.) I also find the sentimentality over the top - Hey Jude, Sweet Caroline etc. I am 100% gunning for France. I think for a lot of people from countries that were colonised by the British it's a natural instinct to say ABE.

You mean English. Not British.

Because many English football fans are racist thugs who have typically misbehaved in other people's countries probably.

Ah yes, the boringly predictable simple response, because other country's fans are so wonderful, never make racist comments about sports people yawn yawn yawn. You really need to get about more lovey, you may start by asking Lewis Hamilton about the racist abuse he received especially in Spain!

Goldenbear · 12/07/2026 13:39

Do they.

Yes. Obviously not all, but there is a tendency to take over a place with loud and not very self-aware behaviour.

I've also realised Anglo-Saxons generally tend to talk very loudly - especially after a few drinks, but not always. I include Americans and Australians in that observation...

Calliopespa · 12/07/2026 13:46

Goldenbear · 12/07/2026 13:35

It's always the English in Spain that people base their inaccurate global view of the English on.

There is truth in that.

ChilliBrandy · 12/07/2026 13:40

I'm from Germany and I've never met a German person who hates England. They are always positive about England in my experience.

I know a German who has said in the past he would rather see England lose than Germany win. He also says if they do win this time he looks forward to saying, you needed a German for it to happen.

I have come to accept that everything I love about England will always sit uneasily alongside my feelings about the British Empire. It's a complicated history if you live in a colony and somehow football boils it down to something very instinctive, which is nope, don't want to see you win. But then if England does win I will also try very hard to be happy for you all once I get over myself.

Oh god. There’s one of them on here,

We’re clearly not the best at everything. The Brazilians and the Argentinians might disagree with you about football, the New Zealanders about rugby and the Australians about cricket.

We’ve had some great players and teams at times but that’s about it.

Sorry South Africa are the best rugby team and have been for a while. They will win the current nations championship and the World Cup next year

Your colonial past is a bigger issue in the english speaking world, naturally enough, as that's why they/we are speaking english.

If you post on forums speaking other languages you might get a different story.

Also, Brexit didn't help your rep much within Europe.

It’s the jingoistic way you all bang on about it “coming home”, like England has the absolutely right to win everything - and how incredibly unbearable you will all be if you actually win.

it gives me the shivers.

come on Argentina!

Coming home refers to the fact that soccer was created in Britain, not to any idea that we have the right to win everything.

Goldenbear · 12/07/2026 13:50

Differentforgirls · 12/07/2026 13:33

Can you not see that this post could make people from Scotland dislike you?

The OP asks why people dislike the English and tbh, a lot of the responses from English people on this thread perfectly demonstrate why.

There is not one thread on here from a Scottish, Irish or Welsh person asking why we're "hated".

Because we're not.

There are many started by English people asking that question.

And it's always answered in the replies. By a minority of English people.

Most English people are just like the people in the other three parts of the UK.

But the minority are loud and let them down.

Where do you get your categorical view that the English are hated globally from and that you think the rest of the world differentiates so easily when they hear the English language being spoken. Every time I go to the Mediterranean I am asked if I am Swedish, German, Danish or Dutch, despite my whole family being English. My husband is very Olive skinned and people always think he he is from continental Europe, he isn't but being from London, our heritage is very diverse. It's the same with our friends, family heritage from all over the world. We are speaking English in generic SE England accents, they aren't able to discern we are English so how are you so convinced that this viewpoint is universal - it's just bollox!

ClimbEveryLadder · 12/07/2026 13:50

englandd · 12/07/2026 09:37

Well then surely that should extend to other countries possibly winning who also have thuggish fans ? My point is, why is it only the English ?

You are under estimating the impact of Britain’s colonial past especially the aspects that are still in living memory. Many colonised countries achieved independence within living memory. Ireland still hasn’t achieved full independence. Britains treatment of the Irish was horrific.

There is also an arrogance to many British abroad that is only surpassed by North Americans. Brexit didn’t exactly help dispel the impression Britain thinks they are better than every other country.

Me neither!

The Italia 90 doco is worth a watch on Sky. While I was gutted we lost to (W.) Germany at the time of course it was actually lovely for them to win the cup at the time of reunification and so on.

And remember then WW2 was far more in living memory. One of the players said it was the first time people had felt good about flying the flag and singing the national anthem.

The Yugoslavia team bits are insightful and moving.

Which two weeks?

Perhaps it's your social media algorithms that are making you believe that.

Indeed, my algorithm has been the world loving the English/British chants and rinsing America’s feeble attempts!

However, my Instagram did bombard me with English hate this morning due to the Norwegian loss, I found it a tad disconcerting so I get where @englandd is coming from.

Gives you the shivers FGS.

Exactly the pp sounds like they’ve engaged with those posts in SM and been fed more.

Mine is England celebration, Jude Bellingham congrats and some on the Haaland friendship.

Insert any other ethnicity instead of English and you would be on racism charges.

Uh no. It’s xenophobia, just like hatred of Americans. The English are awful but they hate everyone so I guess there’s comfort in that.

Thing is since you’re not Spanish or Portuguese you have no idea how much their former colonies hate them do you?

you just have a totally England centric view of the world where you’re the centre and no one else experiences what you do. This is also why people hate the English btw

What needs saying about that. I as an English rugby fan and supporter recognise that they are in another league as witnessed at the most recent match.

What I have seen on Reddit mostly seems to come from smug Americans. The colonialism thing is just a convenient excuse for people with no critical thinking skills (the US only expanded from 13 to 50 states because of colonialism!). Some of them extend it to the rest of Europe too. I think it makes them feel better about their sad lives to pretend that other countries have it worse.

Agree. Most people don't hate the English the way Reddit/YouTube algorithms would make you think. Algorithms show us negative things to make us upset. And Reddit is mostly full of opinionated Americans. The reason why they are as they are is because:

There are the Americans that are against colonialism etc and sort of outsource their qualms about ongoing imperialism and historic wrongs (eg the genocide of Native Americans) onto the English/Europeans as a way of talking about it without being attacked for "hating America"

There are also Americans who are proud of being descended from the Mayflower and see American history/civilisation as starting there. Or who are proud of their European cultural roots and want to use them to claim a sort of white American identity. The problem is, modern England doesn't look like it did at the time of the Mayflower and the English football team don't look like how they want to look. So they have a narrative that England/Europe have degraded and they are the true inheritors of Shakespeare and whatnot. They need to fuck oss

TV and movies where English people play the bad guys/the snobs/the cowards (because we have good actors). Combined with the Americans always being the hero. Add an inability to tell the difference between movies and real life, and a general lack of interest in history/geography outside America (TBF America is a big place) and you get a skewed idea.

There are plenty of places colonised by the British (not the English) who have reasons to critique the British empire and who understand that the British aren't some great civilising force (the British don't think that either largely). But even they don't, by and large "hate the English". Most people have their own stuff going on.

You are getting Britain and England mangled. Is it only the English who are a problem, or are you tarring the Scots and Welsh with the same brush? Or do you not know the difference?

No one has a sense of humor like the Irish so that can't be it 😉🤣

I do think you're all as funny as fook but I think we're pretty much the same in Scotland.

My husband and sons though, love Stewart Lee. The all go to his shows then come home and bore me to death renacting them. I'd be as well going.

Scottish people were disproportionately represented in Empire activities. Dont tell me you didnt know that?
